Nikon Time Lapse and RED fulldome videos.

Hi all

 

I'm new here, and it's nice to find a place where one can have their work looked at and critiqued. For the past ten years or so I have been working in the fulldome medium (think Omnimax but primarily real-time and pre-rendered CG). I have a traditional film and video background from Columbia, so I have always wanted to bring the cinema world into the dome environment, but the technology wasn't there (minus Imax and 35mm film). I've shot lots of time lapse photography, and have refined that process for the dome. Since the RED came out, I have been exploring and refining the work flow for bringing live action to this emerging 4k medium. Please have a look at the following:

 

SecondCity is my home town of Chicago as seen through time lapse photography. This was my first attempt to break away from CG content creation for the dome.

Awesome stuff Matt, I love Chicago, one of the most photogenic cities in the world.

What's is the dome, are the fisheye effects created in post?

What particular setting do you use for the car lights smears? do you disabled the shutter and shoot 1 or 2 frames a second?

Thanks for the kind words. Chicago is a great place to shoot, there is so much diversity in the architature here.

 

The fisheye effect is achived by using a fisheye lens and a custom mount for the RED ONE, and a standard f-mount for the Nikon. I create content for planetariums and digital domes, thus the fisheye look. Trust me, once you see a fulldome show, no other type of film will ever be able to give you the immersive feeling of the dome.

 

For SecondCity, the exposure time varried depending on the shot, but around 1-2 seconds per frame.
