Gordon Willis

I met Gordon when I first moved to NYC in 1997 and he was doing a lecture to a small group of people here in NYC and it was just before he decided to pack up and move out to Cape Cod which is where he lives now. He was just as candid as in this interview.

He is one of the DP's I admired the most when I was younger because he got away with so much and he did what he wanted in terms of his work. I saw "Little Murders"some years back and that was a cool film directed by Alan Arkin and it was made before "The Godfather" films. There is a scene where the power goes out in an apartment while a family is having a get together and not only is it is a hilarious scene, the way Gordon lit the dark apt. with candles and well placed under key lighting was a foreshadowing of what he achieved in the Godfather films.

He was "The Master of Dark" and I agree with him about the "Beer Commercial"look which is all too common these days too just in a different generic way....
