Salil Sundresh
I'm looking to buy some stingers for my tungsten light kit (biggest head = 1000w). I can get 14 gauge or 12 gauge, both are rated for a max current of 15A. Besides being heavier and more durable, are there any benefits or drawbacks to going with 12 gauge 15A? 14 gauge (50ft) : $20 12 gauge (50ft) : $25 Edited April 24, 2009 by Salil Sundresh
Premium Member John Sprung Posted April 24, 2009 Premium Member Share Posted April 24, 2009 12 gauge wire should be rated for 20 Amps. It must be the connectors that are the limiting factor. Using heavier wire than required will result in less voltage drop, which keeps your color temperature accurate and brightness up where it should be. -- J.S. Premium Member Bruce Taylor Posted April 25, 2009 Premium Member Share Posted April 25, 2009 Like John said, it's probably the plugs. Edison plugs have a maximum rating of 15A, I imagine that's the reason for the 15A rating, even though the 12 gauge wire is good for 20A. Spend the extra $5 for the heavier wire, you'll be glad you did. I routinely run 2k lamps on 12 gauge cable with 15A rated heavy duty edison plugs and it works fine.
