Eugene Lehnert
I recently finished a trailer for a 2.35 film out. The trailer had subtitles and when the video was printed to film the film out cut off a substantial amount of the top and bottom of the picture near to the subtitles. I am having the trailer transferred back to tape so I can create a revised subtitle safe area for the film outs. Why is so much cut off during a tape to film transfer? John Michael Trojan
action safe on a film-out is not the edge of frame, nor is it "action safe" on a standard HDframe (due to LCDs/plasmas/projectors there really isn't much by way of action safe any longer). i.e. a 1.85 filmout from an HD frame will be safe around 1828x988 pixels or so. You should ask your Lab for pixel dimensions based on the data you're delivering.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted February 13, 2010 Premium Member Share Posted February 13, 2010 Scope projection is actually 2.39 : 1, but the projector mask is slightly tighter than the image on the print, which is common. Plus screen masking / curtains can further trim the image. Hence why you need to allow some leeway and give yourself a safe area to keep titles inside of.
