Chroma Key Shutter Angle

Recommended Posts

hi all

whenever we shoot chroma key scenes, the DP changes the shutter angle from 180 degrees to 90 degrees

(normally we shoot at 25fps and 180 degrees)

i know this makes the image sharper and easier for keying

but is this a must?

thanks so much

It's not a must. Good compositors can easily deal with the motion blur. I personally wouldn't change the shutter angle unless you wanted the end product to have the "look" associtated with that shutter angle.

The better you light your green / blue screen, the easier it is for your compositor to deal with motion blur. A good green screen is very flatly lit - i.e. has the same value of green right across, without folds or shadows. The reason this helps with motion blur is that such blur is effectively a gradation between the colour of the foreground object and the green. If the green itself has many shades, then the compositior is forced to set their keyers to cancel all those greens, which inevitably also cancels some of the subtle motion blur detail that falls into the same colour range.
