Canon Auto Zoom 518 - exposure meter needle problem?

Hi there. I've recently acquired this camera, loaded it up with batteries, got some film, but now I notice that the exposure meter needle isn't moving anywhere, regardless of whether I leave it on auto or turn it around on manual.

Firstly, I don't see a light sensor - is that done through the lens? Mostly, though, I want to know if it's possible that the needle is broken - and, if so, I'm wondering if it's still possible that my film will expose correctly.

I've made sure it's on, lightly pulled the trigger, shined a flashlight into it, but there's no movement.

I'm pretty new to this, but you folks seem so helpful with other people's problems, so I'm hoping you'll do the same for me.

Thanks!
