shooting 4:3

I heard that you can shoot 4:3, what is the quality like and is the whole resolution used with the image stretched or do you end up with black bars. thinking out loud it gives the posibiliy of shooting with a pstecknik converter and scope lenses if this was the case. which may or may not be a neat idea.
