Marcus Taplin
I was wondering monitors or software people use to accomplish "Onion Skinning" on set? I know the small HD DP7 has that capability but would love to have a bigger on set field monitor then just a 7''. We are match cutting an action with different actor and cutting them together like a flip book or stop motion sequence. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated. Phil Connolly
Dragon Frame is the go to stop motion tool and has lots of features to line shots up and nail composition as well - most the animators I know use it mainly for its onion skinning. Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted May 1, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted May 1, 2016 This is a pretty good reason to hire a VTR person to handle all of your playback and overlay requirements. That's the way I have seen it done most often. Otherwise, I use the old school method and use a white china pencil to trace the outline of the objects that need to stay locked on the plastic monitor screen protector. It's also a good idea to take lots of camera notes. It's a little rough, but works ok if you have enough resolution to resize and slide the frames around in post.
