Kodachrome 40 16MM

Any thought out there in the future of this film stock?? With Kodak discontinuing

K40 Super 8, is our beloved 16mm stock far behind? Should I take out a loan now and fill my freezer up???? With 16MM Kodoachrome, there are currently only 2 reversal stocks available in 16mm.

As part of the portfolio revamp, Kodak will discontinue sales of its S8 KODACHROME 40 Movie Film. Final sales of KODACHROME Super 8 will be based on product availability over the coming months. Sales of KODACHROME 16 mm films will continue, unaffected by this announcement.

 

There are still only two labs offering 16mm KODACHROME processing.

I was hoping to hear from you John! This is good news indeed. In your opinion, do you feel that K40, 16MM will be in the catalog for at least several years to come??

I have been wanting to try this stock but would need 100' daylight spools. Also, I don't think that you could ever match the contrasts of Kodachrome. I think that Kodachrome also has the most accurate color registration of any reversal film ever made. I would be willing to bet that 100D is a bit warm.

But again, as with Super 8 the question comes up: how are you going to use 16mm K40? Will you use it for its original intent and project the original as your release print? Or will you transfer it to video, or create IN / IP copies off of it so you can make release copies? You can stick wheels on a boat and drive it down the street, but why not start with a car?

I must confess, that I am an amature cinemeatogrpher so most of what I do is for projection from the original. I also shoot alot of 35MM slides, so I have been a huge fan of Kodachrome in general for many years.

Hi, how about processing of 16mm k40, will this continue at switzerland for several more years?

No chance of kodak dumping k40 in favour of the better k25, or even offering k64 in 16mm?

BTW, i am also an amateur, have used 100d, colours too ott, no grain, looks good in daylite, imo don't look as sharp as k40, k40 colors look more accurate, will continue to use k40 over 100d, all footage exposed with same camera/lens.

7285 is a very interesting stock but - kind of way over the top for some things.

 

OTOH I'd love to try cross processing it sometime, why not go completely crazy :)

 

BTW I'm told by someone who ordered it that 7285 IS now available in 100' spools

(I don't know if this is on Kodak's web site. Anyway call them first.)
