City Award for Best Canadian Feature Film goes to C.R.A.Z.Y. directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. Vallée's wildly entertaining film is an ambitious and magical cinematic homage to the pop-culture-saturated middle class of the seventies. Zachary Beaulieu (Marc-André Grondin), a sexually confused teenager with an affinity for Bruce Lee, John Lennon and, most importantly, David Bowie, tries to survive four rough-and-tumble brothers and win the affection of his loving but old-fashioned father (Michel Côté). The jury selected C.R.A.Z.Y. "for its standout acting, its incredible emotional resonance and extraordinary visual inventiveness." Plus it will represent Canada at the oscars.... I hate to deflate your balloon, but...... 1) It's a Quebec movie so no one in English Canada or the USA has seen it, or will see it. 2) No one watches the Genies except the friends and family of people nominated. The only CBC show with fewer viewers is The Aboriginal Achievement Awards. 3) Quebec movies get a huge sympathy vote at the Genies. The fear is that if a Quebec film does not win virtually every award, Quebecers will freak out and acuse English Canada of "snubbing" their culture. Sorry but there's so much politics invloved you can't take the Genies seriously. 4) As for the film representing Canada at the Oscars...oh great that's wonderful news. Since it also won Best canadian picture at the Toronto Film festival.. Im guessing SOME ppl will see it outside of our beloved Montreal. Well the people of Paris really look down on Quebecois I'm sorry to say. They think Quebecers speak a bastardized form of their beloved French language. It makes me laugh when Quebecers think the French are their "allies," you've got to be kidding, the French pay no attention to Quebec at all. They haven't since 1756. The Londoners will be an even tougher crowd. Imagine a guy in Texas who walks into his local Blockbuster Video, he sees this film on the shelf, "C.R.A.Z.Y". A Quebec movie, in French with English sub-titles. The odds of him renting it are zero. Remember Denis Archand(sp?), his film won best foreign film at the Oscars. No one outside of Quebec had ever heard of him or his film. Quebec is like this little country all on its own, no one knows what goes on inside there, and most Quebecers I talk to have no idea what goes on in English North America. Cuz most ppl just dont care about foreign films in general. If I can convince one person to see it, that's good enough for me. I just want to share my excitement with you guys.... cuz It is an exciting film. And you don't need to be french canadian to apreciate it. I'm from Britain and I loved it.... okay.. I also worked on it... BUT STILL... Ive worked on much bigger films like Sin City and Sky Captain and didnt care at all about their success. Remember Leolo ? Film about this crazy italian/french family living in montreal. Didnt win best foreign film at the oscars but it was a success worldwide... including the U.S... I lived in London when I saw it. Hell, Time Magazine put it in their " All-time best 100 movies". As for Paris.... In the past 2 years... "Les invasions barbares"( babarian invasions) and " La grande seduction" (Seducing doctor lewis- big hit at Sundance btw).... made a better run at the box-office in Paris alone than the whole province of Quebec... And its not because these films weren't popular in Quebec, believe me. Not to mention ALLL the singers and artists from Quebec who conquered France.... I mean.. the list is just.. so long... Lynda Lemay is like their new George Brassens... Isabelle Boulay, Corneille, Stephane Rousseau, Francois Perusse.... and it goes on and on and on. They are virtually all completely useless elsewhere, but that doesn't matter when it comes down to it. The purpose of Telefilm is Canadian film for Canadians. Films like C.R.A.Z.Y and LES BOYS and whatever, nail that and deserve accolaids and support for doing so. They make money. They enjoy a significant return on their investment. UNLIKE the English Canadian "filmmakers" who have thrown untold millions down the toilet making projects that are the laughing stock of Canadians. How many millions in unpaid loans (because that is what Telefilm gives out -- LOANS) have the "big names" in English Canadian film defaulted on? Because not paying back your loan is DEFAULTING. Telefilm is welfare for well connected filmmakers nothing more. It's criminal to hand out millions in tax payer money to a select few filmmakers who are making "Canadian" films. If you're an English speaking white male your chances of getting any Telefilm money are near zero. I'm shooting a feature in October in Ontario, guess how much free welfare money I'll be using? None, that's how much. The lions share of the Telefilm fund goes to Quebec as yet another tool to try and bribe Quebecers to stay in Canada when the next referendum comes. Try applying for Telefilm from Alberta, GOOD LUCK!! My greatest hope is that Stephen Harper shuts down Telefilm and sells off the CBC to the highest American bidder. Canada would be better off without either Telefilm or the socialist CBC. Hey I know, sell the CBC to FOX news, it can be used as their Canadian HQ. I've been trying in vain for 2 years now... It's very frustrating. But alot of that has to do with the fact that our films aren't very popular inside and outside of Canada ... cept for Cronenberg's. :I French canadian films are hugely popular in Quebec... I mean.. C.R.A.Z.Y did better than Star Wars at the box-office.. or any other film for that matter... Telefilm Canada doesnt lose as much money in Quebec... sometimes it doesnt lose money at all...
