book light ?

hello,

sorry if this question seems stupid ? but what exactly is a "book light" ? a special device to produce soft light ?

we don't use this term in france an maybe i know this under another name ?

Think it's a reference to a bounced softlight. These solutions have different names depending on who uses them or 'invented' them, but they're basically the same. Howard Atherton, BSC, often refers to a 'wedge light and Allen Daviau, ASC, calls them 'book lights' and so on.

By using (for eg) a 4X4 foamcore and 4X4 diffusion materal at 45 degrees together in a wedge shape you point your light at the foam and let it bounce off into the diffusion material and onto your subject.

Most of the time I have seen book lights used, it will be a 4 foot by 8 foot book made up of the aforementioned materials, long ways vertical and pre made so that one may pull it out of the truck, bring it to set, and open it up like a book. Then it will stand up by itself, no stands necessary, and electrics pump a 2k, mini brute, or whatever into it. Or something like that.
