Guest rdegracia
I am 33 years old spanish student ? camera operator ? cinematographer I have got a fulbright and I am trying to develope the proyect in order to accomodate the conditions of the grant. I would apreciate some help in this process in wich I am supposed to apportion the datails of the project: extending studies on cinematography on the EEUU. I was thinking on a 1 year program, because of money problems...but, everithing is possible.. I have been studying audiovisuals in Spain for 6 years, gettting some grades as: Diplomado en Direccón de Fotografía Cinematográfica 2000( DP Diplomate), Técnico Especialista en Imágen fotografíca 1994(Photographic Technics Expert), Técnico Superior Especialista en Imágen y Sonido 1995(High Expert on Audiovisuals), or some others private diplomas... I have close to 6 years of experience such as: Diretor of photography on two motion pictures on Spain ? medium budget - , Camera Operator on 3 Motion picture films as a camera operator, or as a cameraman on tv (commercials, news and documentaries)... I am in love with motion pictures and documentaries, but many other experiences are wellcome... My challenge is to improve definetly myself on methods and technical knowledge on the cinematography aspects and all the new technologies. But I am quite interested on getting links with other people and ?ways of doing?, others point of view, others experience... Educational, personal and life experience is the most valuable goal I am looking for!!! So... what kind of program or experience would you reccomend??? THANKS IN ADVANCE

THANKS IN ADVANCE With your experience, you have two choices: AFI or LA Film School. AFI is the best film school, but very hard to get into. Very competitive. LA Film School is the same type of program but easier to get into. I know several people from Spain who went to LAFS. They have great teachers and lots of equipment: 35mm cameras, 16mm, HD and tons of lighting, grip and audio equipment. I don't think AFI has much in the way of equipment and studios. I know people who come out of LA Film School with reels that have 35mm, 16mm and HD stuff to show.

THANKS IN ADVANCE With your experience I would say use the scholarship to get into a school that is located where you want to live. If you ultimately want to end up in Paris, pick Lumiere or another top French school. If you want to be in California, pick USC or AFI or even Chapman. New York? Pick NYU. And so on. Use the time in school to make contacts as well as learn. You've already gotten a film schools worth of experience which is what most students are HOPING for when they shell out for film school. You've been given a free year to try to make inroads at someone elses expense. Take advantage.
