About the 414..could be funky mic, could be the match between the mic and preamp. The one thing I've learned about the sound of a mic is that it's the combination of the mic and preamp that determine the sound. If you'd like to read reviews of mics, I have a bunch of them in the On Line Archives on my site: http://www.tyford.com I have also just uploaded an mp4 video that compares the Sennheiser 416 with the new Schoeps CMIT shotguns.
