GEAR: What do you have on your Gaff Belt?

As an electric or gaffer, what do you consider necessary on a shoot?

So far I've only found the need for a light meter, volt meter, circuit tester, pliers, gaff tape, pegs, various edison adapters, and a 3-fer. Am I missing anything?

Thanks for your help.

In addition to what you listed, I also carry a 4-in-1 screwdriver, small scissors, side-cutters, a pelican M6 LED flashlight, a folding allen wrench set, and a couple 10"x10" sheets of black wrap folded up. I started carrying around the small cuts of black wrap recently, and they've played a number of times when we're shooting an insert and we need to break up the light quickly.

When you say 3-fer, are you talking about an edison cube tap? Or are you talking about a camlock or molepin single-to-three splitter? Just curious.

Thanks Kris,

I appreciate your input. Carrying black wrap on oneself would definitely be more convenient and speed things along.

Sorry about the miscommunication, the 3-fer I'm referring to is an edison cube tap.

Thanks again for your help.

That is one huge list. Thanks for taking the time to right down what you have in your Gaff kit. It's quite an extensive kit. There is only one thing I think you are missing: sunblock/sunscreen.

Instead of saying an edison cube tab, I just say 3-fer.

One thing I forgot to mention that I have found essential on a Gaff Belt: a gaffer's glass.

Are there any other items that we are missing for a gaff/electric belt?

Well, in these parts if you ask for a 3-fer when you want a cube tap you'll be handed a 60a Bates breakout to 3 15a Edisons, the terms aren't interchangeable.

Instead of throwing down for a Gaffer's Glass I've always used either a pair of Ray-Bans or a scrap of ND gel.

Sunscreen is a big must-have, I never rely on a production to supply it.

A few important things that I left out are:

Ratchet Straps

Crutch Tips

Butcher Paper

Lemon Pledge

Hardened Bolt Cutters (for when someone loses the key to the Grip cabinet padlock, seriously)

Ceramic Wire Nuts

Various Electrical Splicers and Connectors

Griff Tape

DuveTape

Mortar Shell Tubes (for gels and diffusion, they are water-tight and extremely durable)

Styptic Gel

Road Flares (for exterior safety and VERY theatrical lighting)

Spare Grip Head Inserts

Adhesive Felt Pads

Of course I have never been on a shoot where I have needed all of the tools that I bring but they are there if the need arises.

The only tools I really find necessary to have ON my belt are:

Crescent Wrench

Silent 6in1 Screwdriver - Cause no one wants to hear you 'clink' around during a shot.

Voltage Tester

Retractible Boxcutter Knife

Needle Nose Pliers - One of those fold up deals. Also has some knives.

Wood Screws

Wire Caps

1 C-74 (reversed C-47) - For lifting hot scrims from lights.

18" piece of sash - Such pieces have saved me more times that I care to count.

1" Black Masking & 1" Black Cloth (anything else I get off the tape stringer)

Sharipe Marker & Ballpoint Pen

And this is one of my favourites, a hold over from when I was real fresh in the industry:

Small pieces of 1/2 CTO, 1/2 CTB & 1/2 Minus-Green

This is invaluable after a long day when your eyes are tired. Not sure if a piece is full or half? Just check it against your small piece of 1/2.

This all fits in my fairly compact ACG Grip/Electric pouch, except the tape which is on a tape loop (also ACG), and the Pliers, which have their own case.
