  1. When hooking up my FX1 to my high-def TV through the composite hookups (RGB), am I getting a true high-def image on the screen or in there a loss in resolution through the cables? The image seems to sometimes fluctuate, but it could just be me. Thanks
  2. WOW Thanks for the quick response! I really appreciate your help. Thanks
  3. Thanks, that's great information! But I guess I was looking for the actual final resolution of the data after the down conversion from 1920X1080. Or maybe the resolution of the chip after the down conversion (1.12 million pixels to ?). I'm just really curious to know. Thanks
  4. Are movie trailers printed on the same film as the final movie print? Such as if the final print was done on Kodak 2383, would it be the same for the movie? I would assume they are as to preserve the image, but I wasn't sure about cost. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  5. When importing and downconverting my HD footage to regular DV, what is the final resolution for the image? I have an HDR-FX1. Thanks Andy Yeomans

    HD Tapes

Has anyone made a comparison of tapes to use in HD DV? Can you tell the difference visually and technically between the basic DV tape and an HD DV tape? I thought the HD tapes were made denser to help with drops but does that actually help visually, like with clarity and color? I know that less drops means better picture but I guess I'm talking about definition of the image. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  7. Not that I would ever be able to actually afford the camera, nor do I even know if you can right out buy one, but how much does a Viper camera go for? How much would a rental house pay for it? Just wondering out of shear curiosity if anyone knows. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  8. Well we tested the camera (Sony HDR-FX1) with iMovie HD and try to import the footage as HD...and it worked. So we investigated further by contacting Apple Care and found that the older version of Final Cut Pro HD (I believe it's version 4.5) does not support the FX1, so importing the HD footage is a no-go. The only HD footage that it will accept is DVCPro HD. According to Apple, they never tested the camera with that version of final cut and never made any attempt for a patch or driver for the camera. However, the newest version of Final Cut Pro HD (5.0 I believe) does support the camera as well as Final Cut Express HD ($299 Retail $149 Student). Apple does not allow an upgrade of only Final Cut, they make you buy the whole studio ($1200 Retail, $699 Student). Also, in case anyone was wondering, Final Cut Express HD supports dual monitors...I had this questions before buying the program. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  9. Well after playing with the camera for a while, I believe I found a way to shut off the auto exposure...at least minimize it. After going into the picture profile of which I already saved, I adjusted the setting for the AE Shift to the max of +7. From what I can tell, the exposure does not shift when going from light to dark areas. Also I set the AGC (Auto Gain Control) Limit to 0dB...even though I have the camera in manual mode I don't want to take any chances in adding gain automatically. I hope this helps anyone with the same question. Thanks Andy Yeomans

    Sony HDR-FX1

Is there a way to turn off the auto exposure for the Sony HDR-FX1? I can manually adjust the Iris but then the auto exposure kicks in when going from bright to dark areas. It seems like i can kind of minimize t but not turn it off. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  11. I'm trying to capture footage from the Sony HDR-FX1 to Finak Cut Pro HD, but the compter is not recognizing the camera as HD. The footage was captured in HD and all the settings are set on the camera to export as HD, per the manual. The error I am getting is, "Unable to initialize video deck". Final cut will let me capture using the export as DV format, but once I change back to HD the error appears. What can I do to correct this problem? I am using Final Cut version 4.5...do I need to upgrade to version 5.0? Thanks Andy Yeomans
  12. I posted this in another forum but haven't received any responses, so I thought I would try here. I am looking for some good tutorials or reading on how to film a music video. I am looking for the format of shooting...music videos are broken down into many shots with different locations but the same dialogue and I need to know the best way to synch it. How do I use the slate on a music video? What am I doing to keep track of where I am during the shoot? I'm assuming all videos are probably storyboarded with the lyrics and the artist sings to the music being played, but I would like to read something on it. This is kind of vague, I know, but I have never done one before and I need to know where to start. I'm sure I can figure it out myself but I need confirmation. If this IS too vague, let me know and I will explain what I do and don't know further. Thanks

  14. Does anyone have any examples they can show me of the Canon EF adapter in use as compared to the standard lens on the XL2? Thanks
  15. Wow, thanks a lot. I really, really appreciate it. THANK YOU Andy Yeomans
  16. Does anyone have the back issue of American Cinematographer November 1986 with "The Color of Money"? The ASC is sold out and I was hoping someone would be able to scan the pages and send me the image. I know I'm asking alot, but I really want to read the article on 'The Color of Money'. Thanks
  17. I'm using a Sekonic L-358 which has the switchable recessed dome.
  18. When I use my light meter during nightimte exteriors with natural lighting I find it really hard to judge anything since the meter doesn't pick much if anything up, but I can usually get a several stop increse by removing the diffuser. So I guess my question is, how affective can I judge the scene with mny light meter with the diffusion removed? Obviously it's a big change in the reading, and I going for grain. I guess I just don't know how to use my light meter with the diffuser removed. Yeomans
  19. Thanks a lot for the information. I'll post some pics when I get them.
  20. Two questions: What type of lights are the commercial lighting used for streets and sidewalks that emit a strong orange tone? And, what color will those lights emit with cross-processing and an ISO 100 or 200 speed slide film? I will be testing this with still photography, but I would like to know what to expect. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  21. Does anyone know any reputable websites for buying used lighting equipment? I can't stand bidding for items on ebay. I'm looking to buy some 300w, 650w or higher tungsten fresnel lights. I don't mind the manufacturer...I'm on a low budget anyways for myself. Thanks Andy Yeomans
  22. Was there any reports or pictures from 'The Quiet' ever posted? I couldn't find anything.
  23. I've based it on the previews that I have seen over and over. I like what I see in the minute that I get to see it.
  24. The closest look that I am going for is similar to 'Invincible'. Although the look of the 70's has a lot to do with set dressings and wardrobes and playing on colors of the time such as oranges and browns, this movie seems to be close to what I am looking for.
