  1. Hi So im shooting a commercial next week, we have a scene where people are gathering outside a church, its in England so the weather will likely be overcast. For the mids and group shots we want to have backlight, unfortunately the location parameters deny us the use of a crane for these lights, so we have to build a 30ft tower to light from as there is a tree in the way. My question, Should i use a full wendy if the budget will allow or 3x 18k's which they've already signed off on. the base of the tower will be about 30ft from the actors and like i said above will be about 30ft high plus stand so around 40ft high. I should probably mention i'd gel the wendy to 1/2 ctb and the hmi's with 1/4-1/2 cto depending on burn colour. Im after the most throw (width) and the most punch, ideally the light that will most look like a convincing sun breaking through the clouds. My gaffer and I have never used the wendy only the HMI so Any Help would be great. Best Justin www.justin-brown.co.uk

  5. Hi, Saw this Ad for ASOS Thought it looked great, photographed beautifully, edited really well and of course directed superbly by Paul Gore, My question is, Are they using shift and tilt lenses for a lot of the photography? It looks like it and it flares like a tilt and shift lens 0.20 seconds. Best Justin
  6. Hi Everyone I've just cut my new reel and would love some creative feedback, You can find my reel at http://www.justin-brown.co.uk/showreel.html I'd love to hear what you think Best Justin
  7. Hey, Thanks for your comments, i had a lot of comments from all different people, a lot of directors were saying i needed more lit work, thats something i cant add, so will have to work upon that. Also had a lot of conflicting comments so had to go with my guy instinct on the final cut. Its finished now so thanks, http://www.vimeo.com/7793117 Justin
  8. Hi Was wondering if you'd have a look at my ruff cut reel and let me know what you think works, doesnt work, shots that should be taken out and if the music works. Im looking at cutting about 10 seconds out of the reel http://www.vimeo.com/7793117 Thanks in advance Justin
  9. Hi, Am shooting a music video and wondered if anyone knew which fairy lights i could use to create such an effect as the two stills i've added, one from Eyes Wide Shut, and the Other from Red Riding. Im thinking that kubrick wouldnt have had LED fairy lights when he made these, so was wondering if anyone new the size of bulb or what wattage to use, or is LED the way to go? In both of these films it looks like all light is coming from the fairy lights bar a little ambience from a chandelier in Kubricks. I'll be only using fairy lights and a 1000watt rifa. Rooms not very big, bout 3mx3m and 2 tall shootin 200t kodak wide open most probably Thanks in advance. all the best Justin www.justin-brown.co.uk
  10. Hi, Thanks for watching, i know what you mean about it feeling like two videos, it is however 3 videos, 2 for the girl, So i may have to put some title cards on? And i shall trim it i think, just need more videos i suppose. And it wasnt anamorphic by the way it was a simple streak filter. Thanks very much justin
  11. Hi im having problems deciding on which cut to put on my site, One is linear and the other not. 12. Thanks David for that, i've found a couple rental places so thats perfect, you mentioned there is an art to lighting smoked sets, would tell more. from looking at the video there are a couple shots where you can see a light reflected in the usher's sunglasses, looks like its a soft long source from above. Is this the way to light in smoke situations? Best Justin
  13. http://www.mtv.com/videos/usher/222200/lov...this-club.jhtml I've just gotten a music video job and the director wants this effect that is in Usher's Love In this club. We dont have the budget for Anamorphic lens's but we're shooting S16mm with a streak filter. He wants the effect of the lighting in the background the flares across the image and im really not familiar with the lighitng in the background, as my past photography is a polar opposite to this style. Does anyone know of what light would create these effects? They look like just regular nightclub lights. And im guesing that all the lights are just being shone directly into the lens. Is Haze or smoke used in the club or is the intensity just extremely strong so this effect is created, and if a smoke is used how have they lit the artist without the image becoming hazy and low con? with a briese at a high angle? And if anyone does know of these lights do you know where they could be hired in London? Sorry for all the questions, the vid is next weekend 28th so if you could get back to me by then i would greatly appreciate it. Best Justin Brown www.justin-brown.co.uk
  14. Hi Thanks very much for your comments, im very flattered. The first shoot is on the Red with zeiss primes, and the other 3 are all S16mm with 35mm zeiss primes Best Justin
  15. Hi Was wondering if you'd be ever so kind as to offer your thoughts about my recent reel, im aware that it freezes for a split second on the first shot the reel is www.justin-brown.co.uk Many Thanks Justin Brown
  16. Hi, I graduated 6 months, Im 21 years old and finding it really hard to find work, most people say that my age counts against me so I've just managed to get a copy of a music video i shot last year, its only a clip, the rest will be put up once its released in February, so i thought i'd put it up here to see what you all think and if its worth me with holding my age from potential directors/producers, it was shot for £3500. I used super16 Fuji. Zeiss super speeds http://vimeo.com/2761129 Justin www.justin-brown.co.uk
  17. How is this Fog effect achieved? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMIaApFCLu8...feature=related Is it that the dp has aimed a light into the lens on every shot? Or is it a filter, as even shots where it is rather dull and there is no obvious direction of light the same foggy effect is achieved? Or is it a post effect which? And finally does anyone know any good techniques on how to achieve this look. Best Justin
  18. Hi, I have recently uploaded my website, would love to hear back on if it works, if the reel is ok and any other stuff Best Regards Justin Brown www.justin-brown.co.uk
  19. Sorry about the low quality and small pictures, but i cant seem to find out what this light is. I would really appreciate it if you would be able to tell me what it is called and what rental houses in the uk supply them Best Regards Justin
  20. i shot this about 5 months ago on a dsr300 and the editor has finally sent me a link, the track is whack, but im happy with how it came out being i only had a blacknwhite viewfinder the better stuff is towards the end http://www.youtube.com/user/Dmitry87 take a look and let me know what you think.
  21. Thanks Tom, Im in the process at the moment of cutting a linear reel, which basically has one film, then another, then another as after i showed it to a BSC member and his producer and they said they prefered to see different styles and got a bit confused when the reel cut back and forth between films. I understand what you mean about the series of shots around 1:06, i've added one of those shots at the end of the next reel and i've also added another film, its 4 mins in total just waiting for it to bloody upload, but would be good to hear what you all thought about the two different styles of reels, and what you think that producers or people who'll hire you will think upon watching a reel and what there looking for. Best Regards Justin
  22. Are there any stocks out there kodak/fuji/35mm/16mm or even still photography stocks that get close to the colour saturation and contrast as both 5277 and 5263? Best Regards Justin Brown

  25. Hi everyone, Im in the process of cutting my showreel today and for the next week and this is my first cut. Its All S16 with one HD shoot. I was wondering if you could let me know of anything that would make the reel better, if you like it or dont, and pace music if the cuts work anyshots that should play longer anyshots that dont work, or you dont like and what you think does work Its on Youtube at the moment, but when i have a locked cut i'll put it on my website which will of course be a better codec and much better quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-B3Qem2i4U Thank you for you help Best Regards Justin Brown
