  1. Why would it cost twice as much? For re centering the lens?

For Super 16 they have to widen the gate, machine and move the CA-1 mount, remark the ground glass and modify the shutter. Then each magazine needs to be modified for a cost of about $350 each, rollers need cutting and polishing, and individual magazine scratch testing must be done. By then you've spent twice as much as you would on a U16 modification. And THEN you need to spend money on S16 lenses/zoom.

For Ultra 16, well, they modify the gate. ;-) You keep the magazines as they are and get to use the lenses/zoom you already own.

  2. Hey all,

I've recently been reunited with the ol' Eclair NPR and it's been ten years since I actually had it in my hands.

I have a few questions regarding taking better care of it than I did in the past.

I still use the regular Eclair flight case which is a metal moose to carry around. I would like to switch to a Pelican. Any recommendations as to which?

Do you store your zoom in a separate case from the camera? I didn't, and my original Angenieux 12-120 became heavily fungus infested. Not sure if a Pelican case would prevent this.

Do you store silica gel packets in your camera case? In your lens case? I'm traumatised by the fungus thing.

Any help is appreciated, the NPR is very dear to me and I want it to last another 45 years.

  3. If you use non-official formats, you will run into trouble soon or later. There is a good reason for standards.

Ultra 16 is readily scanned at Gamma Ray Digital. I can't think of a reason not to use it unless it causes problems for the actual camera, which is what I was trying to figure out with this thread.

I guess it didn't really catch on, and I'm curious as to why. Doug seems to have had no issues, Simon mentioned someone who did a DIY on their Bolex, but so far no reviews regarding professional conversions for Eclairs.

  4.

Make sure you focus really good.

Here's some regular 16mm footage when I was testing an Arri SR1 with a Zeiss 10-100 2.8 lens. A decent lens, sunny day and decent focusing can get you very sharp results.

I like the lens, it's just going to be a nightmare to find it in CA-1 mount. I was given an adapter from Arri to CA-1 made by Les Bosher but I never tried it. I guess I'll read up on the different Arri mounts, I haven't a clue which Arri mount my adapter accepts, as it was a gift.

  5. Totally fine as long as the lines are not sung ;-)

Treat Williams improvised a De Niro impression in a movie some time ago, and I've seen it done many times. SUPERNATURAL reused the entire gun shop scene almost line by line from TERMINATOR, nobody got in trouble. SUPERNATURAL is actually a repeat offender in that department. They also re-used the "I knew it was real" bit from GALAXY QUEST among others.

I remember one 80's horror movie that, I guess, didn't have the budget for song rights from the 50's. The main character was a reincarnated beauty queen from the 50's killing teenagers. They had her humming everything from "Tutti Frutti" to "Blue Suede Shoes" instead of singing and I guess they got away with it.

(On a different note, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was believed to be in the public domain for a few years so scenes from it ended up being used in a horror movie, with the Bedford Falls people turning into zombies. But that's another story)

  6. Quite a few of us are. Even more of us are outside the US. Most of us make it clear in our profiles.

Try not to forget that this is an international forum.

There is a good deal of common ground between the ratings systems in the UK and the US and the age classifications are usually similar.

Some of us are also old enough to remember the original.

I didn't mean in the forum, I meant "we" as in the folks over here where the film opened first.

If I keep talking too much from personal POV, though, I can tell I'm going to be the forum's next Tyler Purcell. ;-)
