  1. Pretty pictures!!

EVAN QUOTE:"Production design is extremely cluttered and distracts from anything that would be telling a story."

The reason the room seems cluttered is because thats the way old people live. If you've ever seen an old persons room/apartment that is exactly what it looks like, to bad we can't "smell" the room.

  2. I don't know whether or not the video isn't playing right on my PC or if it's the way it's edited. I do know that I haven't laughed this hard since I last saw "YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN"...

Please take no offence, but the conventions of rap videos are ridiculous....IMHO. I hope he paid for that Slim Jim...I know, I'm acting like an a**ho**...

Seriously, minding the conventions and borders you are confined to when making a rap video, and considering the circumstances you were under, I think you did a great job. It is hard for me to critique the aesthetics of a rap video, just so you understand where I'm coming from. This is my "fault"...

Some of the shots in the convenience store seemed to lack definition. Overall there was a lack of contrast for my tastes...As far as compositions, well, they were very conventional for rap videos, yes? If you were looking to do something different, you failed miserably. If you were looking to shoot a conventional rap video for music video experience, then you did well. But again, considering your situation, it's hard to say more.

Tell us more about it. How long was the shoot? A day or two? Film emulsion? Any lighting setups? Looks available to me...You just shot MOS, right ? No clapboard or anything?

Again, distancing myself as far away from the material as possible, I can see you did a fine job.

Anywho, thanks for posting. Please feel comfortable to post any time you feel as I/"we" like to see what people are up to. Good luck.

  3. I figured 4-perf 1.33, 2-perf 2.66...I thought they framed for 2.35 to extract, I never thought about recentering the lense...makes sense.

This is a link I found a long time ago. (This page has been up forever.) It has info on the centerline, etc., etc. Fun read... :)

    History of Techniscope

  4. The giallo cycle of the early 1970's used this format almost exclusively. Serio Martino, Luciano Ercoli, the list goes on and on. I'm not sure if Argento used it. I'd love nothing more than to own a 2-perf 35mm camera, even MOS. Spherical lenses with 2.66 aspect ratio....Awesome!

  5. Kubrick met his second, no wait, third and lasting wife Christain on Paths of Glory. Shes the hot babe whom sings at the end. She is german. If he shot in france they never would have met.

The reason for the location change was due to the fact that it made French officers look like butts. Needless to say, France did not appreciate this so close to the end of WW2. (yes, I know the film is during WW1...duh!)

Baxters' biography of Kubrick has some tech stuff about Paths. If I remember correctly it goes into the trenchs and other things such as the "battlefield". . . .

Kubrick is bad-ass! When I was in elementary school the kids made fun of me because I had a picture of him in my wallet! No joke. It was a black and white cut out from a magazine. I think it was Kubrick circa 2001! His short beard phase....I still have that wallet in a box somewhere, I'm sure the pic is still there!

  6. I love this discussion! :) You all seem like very intelligent folk! Wait, that may come off as sarcastic but I mean it!

Myself, I like film. 4k, however, is something that I must, must, must see!

To me it all comes down to alchemy versus science. Alchemy is science but kind of backwoods, you know? When you process film you never really know what your going to get. Chemical reaction versus electronical process!

The battle wages on and will only get bloodier!!!

I don't know where you learned how to critisize someone, but I suggest you work on it. Nothing that you said could be of any use to someone trying to develop their skills as a DP or for someone trying to make a reel. I have a feeling that you're not exactly Conrad Hall at this point in your career, so if you posted a reel you would not find the type of post that you made in any way helpful. Quite possibly it would be hurtful. If you mention a problem, have a suggestion for a solution. It's a good skill to have as a dp.

Couldn't agree more! While your "criticism" may be real world it is most definitly is not constructive. You sound like a producer not a DP...Although I doubt you intended to come off the way your post did. Sometimes text is alot "colder" than spoken words...

Evan- First off, you have plenty of material to actually make a reel. That is good. Many people just shoot stuff for the reason to have a reel in the first place..!!?! However, there is still work to be done.

Recut it for more impact. Kind of like a movie trailer...Also, I agree it is too long. About 1.5-2.0 min. is long enough. I have to disagree with LostLog0 on the music, however. IMHO, lyrics do not belong on reels. Your images are telling the "story" of your talent, not the song. Every time I hear lyrics on a reel it makes me think of a music video. Maybe that is my shortcoming...Lay down some music with the same amount of emotion the cut/edit of your reel has. The images are going to range in emotional impact becuase they are from differing projects, so you have to find a pulse to guide you in your music selection. Your reel has the same pace throughout. This is not a must....You can build up like a crescendo. IE, longer shots in opening and shorter cuts upon ending your reel. Play with it more! Have fun! Remember that fun and learning can be had at the same time!!!

All-in-all you did a fine job! Don't forget those technical points LostLog0 made next time you shoot! As for the reel, there are no "real" rules to making a reel, except the length. Mess with it some more and then repost it for us. I would like to see it very much! Thanks for sharing and good luck...

  8. All of 'em are noisey beasts! Go with the Konvas unless you want a variable shutter. Most Konvas 2M packages come with a set of primes and a zoom. They are decent glass and capable of taking comparable/same images as any other camera. Like Thomas said, a camera just holds and moves the film, which is important , but image quality is about film stock, proper exposure, optics and processing. The price is always right with a Konvas, just do some backround checks before buying online. Also, try to get one with more of the 400ft mags as they don't need an adapter for the core. Loading one can be a pain but I've heard that if you practice it doesn't take long to master. Most salad is made by lazy people...

Hell, if you find a good price on any of these cameras and they are in good pre-sale condition, go for it. I say pre-sale because there is no such thing as "like new" with these old cameras. Even if someone says they just shot great looking footage with it you should still get it checked and give it a tune-up right when you get it...A few thousand dollars is a lot of money for anything but buying a camera should still be a fun process! Don't get too crazy over the camera details because these three aren't that much different that you have a coronary over it...

  9. Search KAHL in this forum...we've had threads on it in the past.

Tons of labs process B&W super 8.....Super 8 in general. K40 is another topic... Take a second to look around this site ( resource links...?) and search google.

  10. What is this reels purpose? Sorry, I don't get it...Skating, macaroni and cheese, more skating..., some footage from a boat-of a boat, the ocean views, golden gate, ect.

If my criticism is less than constructive I apologize, but this looks like vacation footage to me. I see no semblance of actual project material on show. I did see some of the "Matchless" material in there but the rest looks like you filming your friends on a weekend expedition to The City to carve some curbs with your deck. I don't see anything that can be made from your "first cut".

I applaude you for showing your material and actually going out to shoot. Lots of people talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Keep shooting stories and/or docs in a purposeful way, then make a reel. It almost looks like you filmed that whole macaroni thing just to put in a reel. The purpose of a reel is to showcase impactful snippets from previouse projects. When I say"purposeful" I'm not responding to style, but impact. This goes back to the point I made about it looking like a vacation video with friends.....Also, It's about 3min. long, I'd make it 2.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. Keep it up...

P.S.- Love the song, maybe it has something to do with the "vacation feel" aspect? I've rarely seen reels with lyrics in the music. You're showings images, not making a music video right?

  11. Hi-

I'm no hater, but I have yet to see a decent transfer from pro8mm. Look up pro8mm on this site and on other boards. This is not just my experience.... You will find the consensus is that pro8 doesn't put too much value in transfers for "regular" folk. Great cameras, if overpriced, same film stock, if overpriced, as kodak and the transfers suck. Bad.

I'd buy the stock as cheap as I could and have it processed and transferred by a company who treats every customer the same. Even if it ends up being $50 or so more, you won't regret it. Try Flying Spot out of Seattle or something, there are tons of places, just check the boards...Just my .02 worth. B)

  12. Open note to everyone flabergasted over Mr. Gallo being conservative:

There is such a thing as having a conservative gut and a liberal mind.

For example, I know plenty of gay men who agree with Bushs' foreign policy(Iraq War) but, obviously, differ with his domestic agenda. I know staunch Democrats who don't believe abortion should be legal, and they don't believe in God either so there is no faith based agenda. :o Hell, I even know a card carrying Republican who thinks dope should be legalized! People are people, it's the ones who are all or nothing on either side that scare the crap out of me....

  13. As I recall on Saving Private Ryan, didn't Edward Burns blow a million dollar shot? He was supposed to throw a grenade or something and it slipped backwards out of his hand , and instead of just going with it he kind of spaced? I think this is true. It was a wide shot showing all the boats and blimps and men running up behind him, explosions, the whole 9 yard. Maybe I just want to believe it....I swear I recall reading an interview with Burns about this though! I don't even think the shot is in the finished film...

  14. Q.T. is totally American. Looks outward for style while his stories are focused inward, at America. I also have to say that he is the homage king!!! Almost every time I review a film of his, something pops up as a wink-wink that was never noticed before. That kind of takes me out of it but at the end of the day Q.T. makes these movies for himself. These are stories told the way he would want to watch them in. Just like a kid.... :P I'm very happy he's American.

  15.

America seems to be the land of great opposites in almost everything. In US cinema I've seen some of the most shallow and stupid films I have ever seen, but I have also seen greatest work of art in the history of cinema.

Probably the truest statement I've ever seen about American cinema on this board. We are a capitalistic society (no problem there) so by nature most of our output regarding film is not meant for intellectual consumption. But at the same time, some of our artists can make the system work for them and in turn produce great works of cinematic art. I love this place. :)

  16. WINTER QuoTE: <_< .......and being a jerky republican.

Ummmm, that's real nice! Part of understanding someones art is trying to understand what he/she is all about. Understanding someones worldview plays a big part in comprehending their art....

That's a pretty ballsy statement for a poster who calls themselves "winter"..... :P

Ok,Ok. Enough. I'm just keeding! I keed!!! But seriuosly, you shouldn't call out political parties like that unless you are willin' to defend yourself in post after post after post thereby pissing everyone off in this forum because the subject got waaayyyyy off topic. You may offend some whith those remarks, basically. I'm just sayin' this because I know, I've pissed people off here...Oh, yeah! Welcome aboard!!! :)

Now Gallo.... That guy is very hard to understand. Alot of those multi-media artist are. He does music, film, other stuff.... I think he just lives for feeling new things. And rehashing old feelings he likes, playing them over. I would bet a pretty penny that knowing him personally would be a somber, even mellow, experience.I think most people would expect him to bite heads of little puppies but I suspect different.

  17. I loved Raging Bull, but the fight scenes (that everyone seems to love) were terribly unrealistic and factually inaccurate. For this reason I don't mind it being passed up.

Saving Private Ryan was a big one for me. That movie was very important. Shakespeare in Love...come on.

I'm not arguing with you :) but just wanted to point out the "hyper-realism", as I call it, in the RAGING BULL fight scenes is like that to show the state of Jake Lomatas mind. It's not about him fighting another boxer, it's about Jake fighting himself. It's not supposed to be "authenic" as you or I would expect to see when watching a real fight. The ring itself is a metaphor. Watch the film and you can see the actual rings used in filmimg are different sizes, to "highten" or "lower" the mental state of Jake. It's not just done with perspective...the rings change size. Also, how many things look "real" when shown in slow-mo? Many shots are done this wayin the film. At one point , when Sugar Ray is about to pounce on Jake, the lighting changes and perspective changes in a single shot. Obviously Scorsese wasn't trying to trick us. He wanted us inside the head of Jake Lomata, which I can assure you would be a surreal experience, hence the "innacurate" fight scenes.

On another note, I used to box. Not in compitition, but a club, a bunde. I still haven't seen a movie that showcased "accurate" boxing. That includes Million Dollar Baby, Rocky, whatever. All these films have like, what, 2, 3 cameras following the action. Maybe more at times. I don't know about anyone else , but when I watch a fight a punch is a punch. My mind doesn't "cut" the action into 3 different shots. To me, this enables the rendering of "inaccurate" punches to maximize a controled impact. Fake. Well, faker. Scorsese shot with one camera, baby. None of that throw a punch, cut, gloved fist thru air, cut, land punch, cut, head rolls back, cut, etc, etc, etc. Watch Rocky and there are 3-4 shots in one thrown punch!!! Is this inabling a a more accurate environment? Not to me...The fight scenes were fight scenes until Scorsese used this hyper-realism to express the were-abouts of Jakes mind.

Remember, RAGING BULL is a drama about a man and his relationships out of the ring. It's inside the ring where he deals with these emotions. This is NOT a boxing movie. :)

PS-As far as the "factually inaccurate" fights, you couldn't be more "inaccurate". Every single fight is coreographed to match the actual fights that took place. Punch for bloody punch.

  18. No, no, no...It was a joke.( I was born with the ability to read satanic messages. ) The "BLOOD SAUSAGE" thing is a line Mary Stewart-Masterson says in the episode GO TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS directed by Robert Zemeckis for the anthology tv series AMAZING ATORIES from 1986. I guess I'm the only who got it.... :(
