  1. Has anyone shot Kodak 50D at sunrise. I really want to capture the beautiful sun rising near a castle with as little grain as possible. im shooting 16mm. the kodak code is 7201 thoughts p
  2. shot it on sat, weird color shift, blue fogging, noisy.. annoying. use old stock if u just dont care and wanted wacky mucky vibes. i wont skimp on stock next time. brand spanking 50d vibes for me.
  3. hi all. Wanted to show you a grab from the other weekend. This was when I asked about shooting 400T with 85 filter. Came out looking pretty nice. had the standard 16mm scanned at 2K Actually really into the black pillerbox vibes. really under rated! love film so much. imagine the zero vibes if id shot canon 5d!
  4. if u do you're a fool. If that switch doesn;t work then the hybrid board id burnt out. YOu cant replace that,
  5. Ok Panic over. Now, I'll explain what happened. Earlier today I was testing it on my tripod and put on the plate under the camera. It turns out, when you screw this plate in, it over-rides the button on the pistol and fires automatically. But hay, you all knew that, right? Please, i know for long standing ASC, clued up members my posts must be very annoying. But the way I see it, if someone else searchs for Arriflex BL button problem, they may make it here and work it out.
  6. This didn't happen yesterday. Today, I connected the battery lead to the camera and it fired up straight away. I clicked the button on the grip and nada. Nothing. Am i missing something here or is my button fried? :( Arriflex 16 Bl ?
  7. Hi Karl. Who said anything about Student? Sure im a student of life. But i have budget to do this. I'm sorry If im asking a lot of questions and they've probably been asked a billion times. I don't follow. Where is this expense? The idea is simple. Film wide shot of girl walking across a baron landscape. Take footage to lab. Get HD DPX sequence. Extract one frame. Give to my digital matte painter friend, he does his job, extends the environment then passes back to me. I then give this plate to my friend who is in charge of adding motion grain and comping in the shot of the girl walking across. I did search for people doing 16mm comp's and couldn't find anything. Maybe this thread will provide someone else with tid bits of help when/if they decide to do a digital comp using 16mm footage. SIf you were in England Karl, I'd buy you a pint and let you have a little role in my film to say thanks! how about that!
  8. IF they were using but one DPX frame from the 16mm footage as the plate. The girl walking accross garbage masked to be just her and the path, grain movement in post, particle effects etc. Would it look odd? The whole point of shooting on film was for the lush vibes. I really dont want it to turn into a digital meltdown.
  9. Thanks Karl and James. I won't be shooting any green/blue screen. If you could imagine a super wide vista with a character making its way across the middle of the frame. Very small. If I took a picture of the scene with a 35mm SLR, wouldn't there be a massive image quality disparity with the 16mm image? Would I then still film using 16mm the girl making her way across the frame, then in post, garbage mask out everything but her path and blend. Would blending that with a 35mm still with gain effects apply work? If i simply shot a clean plate on 16mm. Then shot the girl walking across. Get the footage scanned at HD quality, have the artist extend the footage based on the plates colors, tones etc, then the compositor add moving grain, color correct etc. Would that not work you say??
  10. Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any tips regarding shooting background plates that will be used in post for digital matte painting. I am filming tomorrow for my sci-fi film on some baron mud beach in magic hour. I want to take these locked off shots and have my matte painter extend the background, add city in the background, planets, mountains etc. Are there any special considerations you would take? shoot at f16 etc etc? Any help would be very much appreciated. p
  11. Thanks for that David. My only issue is I have just one 85 filter and one combo 85n6. Thats it. If i use the 85n6, what am i rating the stock at? 65? P
  12. Hi David, Thanks for your detailed response. The stills look incredible by the way. I was actually thinking of filming 30 minutes before total dusk so I still get those long shadows and glistening glow from the sun reflecting off the shiny wet mud flats. I'm guessing in the stills you posted you were running with no filtration. Is 400T a good stock to use for this situation or should I be using 250D? The only filters I have are an 85N6, 85, 85 Pol - Do i need the ND combo? Sorry, I've no experience using ND's at all. If not, I shall use the 85 and rate the stock at 320. Is that correct?
  13. Hello I am filming this Sunday in Bradwell-on-sea. Planning on shooting in Magic hour. Test out my new Arriflex 16bl. I have some 400T Fuji Eterna. Planning on using this filter I got. The 85n6 which i believe is an 85 filter with ND. Do you reckon this is the way to go? and if so do I rate it at 200?
  14. Hello, Ian, thanks to your incredibly detailed instructions I was able to make the little lead, plugged it in and joy! Thank you so much for your help on that one, I know its easy stuff but still was well kind of you to take the time and offer such a detail solution. My next mini dilemma is this. I let the film spool onto the take up core. The take-up core is not a white disposable type that comes in the middle of the 400ft roll. its a special arriflex core that has a spring loaded clip. ANYWAY. I read the manual and it says when you take it out, you should replace with white core. My dilemma was that the white core didn't fit snuggly. it was lose and easy to fall out. IS this normal? Phil
  15. Ian you are the don! And I'm a plum. Im so thick. Basically i used to have a cinema products cp-16 and it never had an inchin knob. Thanks so much. I owe u 2 milkshakes or beer or whatever!
  16. And all i see is the white exposure thing and nothing else. Anyone know what im doing wrong??? halp
  17. actually, screw it, think they use the same battery as maplins. What about the Ampage? what do you recommend?
  18. Just found this site. I could buy the bits and put it together or spend 50 on this slick version.. Probably cost me 35 once im all done. For the sake for 15 quid and potentially making a gigantic balls up, probably just buy the deben spec. What do you reckon?
  19. You are a top man sir. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into helping me. If you're in London I can help you out filming or something.
  20. I made a little video to highlight my dilema http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_pZJU2-A5w
  21. durrr - I worked it out but thanks for that!!! cheers P

  24. Sorry Mr Borowksi - Excuse my stupidity, I'm rather new to film, so your technical knowledge was a bit daunting for me. I opened the DPX files at work and they displayed correctly and i created a prores4444 file which came in at a managable 20 gig and my laptop could deal with it. Of course I dont want jpegs back. Im well aware of the incredible nature of DPX and the link you provided is amazing. I need to spend time going through and letting all that information soak in. If i post up a dpx file, can you have a look at that for me??
  25. Thanks for the link. £300 or $700 for a battery isn't Cheap however. I was after a cheap solution. not a custom fabricated titanium engraved battery holder.
