Hanging a small light from the ceiling
Natalie Saito replied to Natalie Saito's topic in Grip & Rigging
i was thinking of hanging a light from here. what's the most practical way of doing it? should i use a cardellini? if i do use just a bulb as key light: how would i hang it on a clamp or hook? thanks for reading! -
Hanging a small light from the ceiling
Natalie Saito replied to Natalie Saito's topic in Grip & Rigging
about those "polecats".. how much does it cost..and how much work is required to install them temporarily? based on looking at it: i was thinking that a "polecat" may be good for hanging a curtain (b/t 2 walls of a room)..i was going to just use a pair of c-stands for that.. but the room is not that wide. i dont need to rig a bunch of lights. i think a light bulb may work; but i need one that puts out quite a bit of power and illumination. thanks guys! --Natalie -
Question - 650w bulb on a 1K light?
Natalie Saito replied to Natalie Saito's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
thanks matt. that may be the solution. my question is not about controlling/or reducing light..its about saving amps or power for other sources. are dimmers brand-specific? i'm getting arri lights. i can't seem to find a mixed kit with both 650 and 1k which is what i wanted. if you buy them separating (w/ stands, accessories) is much more expensive. 650s are good but 1ks are more powerful. hmis are more expensive. speaking of hmis, do they use the same amount of amps (or more) as tungsten?? im referring to the ballast. thanks guys! -
is there any pc editing system that is compatible with p2 cards.. or FCP? i know that it supports AVID. could i just dump the HD footage in PC laptop temporarily and after, tranport it to an editing system? is there a program that compresses the footage down to lo-res for editing and then blow it back to hi-res for home pcs? thanks!

oh okay...thanks David! i read panasonic claims that it has "dvcpro hd quality." i think that is what confused me. i also forgot to mention that i've read hvx200 doesn't have an interchangeable lens...it has a fixed zoom? i've heard on xlh1 you can use 35mm still camera lenses?? please correct me if im wrong.

cheaper film schools?
Natalie Saito replied to Danielle's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
im in college for the pretty piece of paper..my parents expect a college degree. film school is a temporary safety belt and guide. unfortunately most film schools don't prepare you for the real world. maybe those expensive film schools do..but think of the huge debt/loans you have to pay back when you graduate. ouch! many "consumer HD" cameras (i.e. hvx200, xlh1) are supported by avid/apple-friendly editing systems. im pretty new to editing (learning avid currently). i own adobe premiere and i was wondering if i could edit my HD footage on it. what is the hard drive space req. for HD? thanks a bunch all!! -Natalie

the hvx200 records only on p2 cards..which I personally dislike. not only are they expensive as hell but they're like film negatives..you only got 1 copy of the original footage (unlike tapes). which is the best "consumer HD" camera (<10 grand) that uses tapes? what are all your opinions on the different brands (sony, panasonic, canon...etc)? thanks for reading! -Natalie

Question - 650w bulb on a 1K light?
Natalie Saito replied to Natalie Saito's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
yeah I meant the 1K tungsten (arri). thanks a bunch. -
I want to hang a light (small light or bulb..possibly china ball) on a ceiling. I was wondering how I could do that without drilling holes in the wall. this is a house. This is the probably the best category to ask this question. thanks for reading! -Natalie

im looking into getting a kit within at MOST 3 weeks. samy's is outta stock so i'd have to wait. is there another l can find ARRI light kit 1K or if possibly mixed kit (650w, 1Ks) id like to spend max. 1400 for the whole kit...3 lights and everything needed (barnies, stands, scrims). what other place can I look around for? thanks!! -Natalie
-
this may be a dumb question, but i'll just ask it... could you place a 650w bulb on a 1K light? i was wondering if it were possible to switch b/t 650 watt and 1000 watt bulbs on the same lights. i'm considering on getting a 1K kit. thanks for reading! Natalie

I agree. if the main concern is money than this is not the field for you. you don't invest your life into something you think is cool or going to make you rich. you do it cuz it's your passion..maybe you might have to spend some of your own money to get started (and I'm not talkin college tuition). if so, it's a sacrifice you're willing to take. that's my 2 cents. -Natalie

lighting
Natalie Saito replied to Natalie Saito's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
los angeles. where would that be? thanks -
I'm planning on purchasing a 3-light kit w/ stands, barnies, accessories + case. I found a couple ARRI light kits online for sale at Samy's. Please let me know if these are good rates and if there are places I can get good rates on good-conditioned light kits. (3) 1K fresnel tungsten light kit $1399.95 (3) 650w fresnel tungsten light kit $1669.95 (4) fresnel tungsten light kit $2269.95 (650w) thanks, it'll help a lot! -Natalie

where can I take an AFFORDABLE hands-on lighting workshop or class? I'm looking for one during the summer. My school doesn't have any class dedicated to lighting for scenes only. I've taken photography and cinematography theory classes; but I want strictly hands-on. I've check UCLA ext but I want to see if anything else is out there. thanks for reading!

i'm confused about plus/minus green gels. minus-green is supposed to remove greenish tint from fluorescent light. does plus-green increase color temp (to match daylight) and minus-green decrease it (to match tungsten)? thanks again!
-
when shooting with mixed sources, daylight and tungsten light: is it better that the lights be color-corrected to match the film? (daylight balanced or tungsten balanced film) or does it not matter? how much do daylight bulbs usually cost and can they be placed onto any type or brand of tungsten light? thanks.

well, that wasn't my question

I hear that new film should last 6 or so months if refrigerated..but I've been hearing that some cinematographers have used 2-3 year old film and had no problem. Is freezing going to mess up the film? thanks.

if I could I would buy it and shoot all my home movies on it--but it's a little too pricey. anyway, which place has the best deals on rentals? how much does it cost for a weekend..including all the necessary acessories?

Where is a good place to rent Sony F900 or find student friendly rental houses? I checked out HD Camera LA. They say it costs $3000/week for the Sony HDW-F900 ENG Camera Package. Is that a good deal? I'd have to get other accessories as well. I've been told these camera including all the camera accessories costs at least $10,000 for a week shoot. http://www.hdstudiosla.com/rental.php#hdw_f900 Thanks for reading! --Natalie

How much does it cost to rent the CineAlta F23 package for about a week? Are there student rates? I've be told that HD is cheaper than 35, cuz you'd avoid extra expenses: film stock, processing, telecine...and of course that Super16 won't cut it for big screens. Is it? It would be a big help.
