  1. Hello all,

I am prepping a concert shoot for this April 15th in Cleveland and need some extra operators.

These four shooters will be going "free style" in the crowd with 5D's- from the pit to the nose bleeds.

Production does not want to fly in anybody so you need to be Cleveland (or close to) based.

If you have skills and are available send an email to martin@saft.no with your info and a link to footage that you have shot.

    All the best,

    Martin

  2. With all due respect to film, Kodak is getting desperate and it's painfully obvious.

As a film student when you hear somebody like Wally Pfister, ASC say that 35mm film is still better than video you feel that its just kodak getting desperate? You should really be paying more attention.

  3. As an actual member of IATSE 669 I can confirm that you need residency to get in to the union. There is, however, a fair bit of (relatively poorly paying) independent film work in Vancouver as well. And yes, while the labour laws in British Columbia rank somewhere between Alabama's and Uzbekistan's for labour protection, the truth is that as a non-union camera assistant you will never work on a union show. Because the producers don't hire camera assistants. DOPs, Operators, and other camera assistants do. If a producer really wanted to get you on I suppose he could, but unless you're his favourite nephew it wouldn't be worth his trouble.

Keep in mind that you don't necessarily need citizenship, just residency.

Producers will also be reluctant to hire you if you do not qualify for their tax credits - you filed tax as a resident the year prior to work starting.

  4. This may set an interesting trend: Maybe if I name my first born Alex(a) Arnold-Richter, the folks at Arri would give me an Alexa camera?

Only if you manage to turn little RedOne and Alexa into tennis pros. Then you're in business!

  5. I am so jaded about the marketing slogans: "Alexa, the camera that will Revolutionize film making,"

    End of rant

    Saul,

According to the Stargate Studios promo "...it sees beyond what you can see with your eyes."

This is not only going to revolutionize film making but vision as well.

    Peace out!

  6. Just looking for the names (and pictures) of who you would call "cinematic" photographers.

Photographers whose works can influence our lighting, colour palettes, composition. Photographers you mention in pre-production meetings and screenings.

Would be interesting to hear what you guys think.

It's just I am building a book of various photographs - using it in pre-production for visual mood and style references/influences.

    Interesting question and interesting thread.

I´ve referenced Jeff Wall for projects. His pictures often express something more- just beyond the edge of frame which give a feeling or emotional response of story - which has been going on before and after the still frame.

    Hi Bobby,

Any chance of you posting stills from the side by side test?

Sounds like a nice gig. Now you'll just have to giver!

    All the best,

  8. A few of you seem to me a bunch of guys in certain regions of Europe during the '30s.

I have no idea what this thread is about any longer. But if I had to choose Europe in the ´30s I would have to say gay Paris!

    Peace out!

  9. But with the economy in the shape it is in, I wonder if that business plan is sustainable?

    Best,

A 4 page thread about some lens that don´t even exist should give you an idea about how much is happening these days!

But when things are slow you have really nothing else to do except R&D - so I´m all for some more lens literature! Jan, where are you?

  11. If you really want to get an "A". Mount the camera onto your body- or just hold it out at arms length- Shoot your own head and shoulders while you walk through crowded downtown streets day/night and ride on public transportation. (Check out "Requiem For A Dream")

When your teacher asks you why this represents maladjustment break down into tears while explaining how it really feels to be the angst filled person you really are. You´ll be declared the class genius... Unless half the class have already done it... ;-)

    Good luck.

  12. Hello,

I'm headed to Colombia for a shoot, and the director would like me to mount a Sony EX-1 to a Cessna 206. Does anyone have any experience with this or any recommendations for someone I could speak with? Much appreciated.

    Ryan

    Hi,

Dont think about hard mounting it. The combination of the plane´s vibrations and the rolling shutter of the CMOS chip will ruin your footage.

    Good luck!

    Regards,

    Martin

  13. Hi John,

I guess that its misleading to ask for a "DP (not a cameraman)" because the talent that you are not respecting and totally under estimating is the gaffer and their level of creative contribution.

It really sounds to me like you should be looking for an experienced gaffer for this project.

    Good luck.

    Martin

  14. I just read that an article about a company "Digital Playground" filming their movie Pirates II in HD with the red. Apprently the original Pirates was shot in HD and was released with an R rating. Do you think porn using cameras like the red will help it enter the mainstream world?

"Red" and "Porn" in the same topic header!

For his first post Jordan Donahoe really knows how to fire up this forum. The posting sounds like advertising to a potential market.

  15. You could try spraying it with cheap hairspray then use an eye dropper to add water droplets on the surface here or there but if you have a rain cover for your camera, I'd use that and get a clothes steamer (you should have one for in your wardrobe supplies for costume touch ups anyway).

Clothes steamer will work perfect for the mirror but add a little smoke for atmos.

Nitrogen on set would have been fun though!

    Good luck.

  16. Hi,

I guess you haven´t many replies because there isn´t really a book or website.

Watch a lot of live stuff very closely and see how its been covered/edited. Break down the songs into shot lists of where you want to be and when. Budgets will effect greatly.

Sorry I cant be of more help.

    Good luck!

    Martin

I'm wondering if anyone here can reccomend a good reference (book or website) for shootig live events like rock concerts, plays or operas.

    Thanks for any reply.
