  1. Nathan,

    Another suggestion....

Try contacting Rangertone in NJ and see if they have a Hokushin portable intermittant, or even an SC-210 for sale. Hopefully something that has been recently serviced. These are slot loaders that if well-maintained can he good registration.

  2. Thanks for the feedback...

I think I'll get the larger one - 36x27x14. If I want the pup tent, perhaps I'll spurge and get it down the

road. Or even better, find one used.

Now I'm left to ask how the 36x27x14 tent does with the XTR 800' mag? I am assuming there are no troubles

if it is said to work with 35mm 1000' loads (35BL?).

  3. Andrew at AZ Spectrum does a nice conversion of the Bolex MST motor. Expensive, but very nice considering what he does. Also does Eclair NPR, ACL, etc. Granted these are new units like the TCS

motors, but conversions of old motors (MST, Perfectone, etc).

    -Alain

Oops. Ment to say "these are NOT new motors"...but conversions of old motors.

Sorry to see the TCS motors, and speed checkers, and milliframe controllers, etc go the way of Media Logic. I had a TXM-26b for my Bolex SBM. The camera's new owner loves it.

I wish it were financially feasible for someone to manufacture a motor similar to Aaton's Alcan. Brilliant little device, and it would help stimulate the sales and use of the NPR, which at this point is the best, low-cost option for s16 sync shooting. Most would agree that the biggest drawback of the NPR are its bulky motor and craddle, and the ACL is not a better solution in my opinion. But I'm going OT here...

  4. I am having a heck of a time locating any place other than Magna-Tech and Du-All that sells 16mm projectors.

MPE rents them, as do many others... but it is difficult to find anyone who seems to sell them.

I am looking with something to evaluate registration tests with, so it would need good registration itself. It seems anything with a Geneva Intermittent movement is way out of our range.

    Anyone have any leads?

    Thanks

    Nathan

You would need an intermittent in order to get the best registration.

ICECO sells some portable intermittent projectors but you're probably looking at $2500-5000 and up. Fumeo, Prevost, and Philips-Norelco made portable intermittent machines.

Most portable, claw movement projectors (Kodak Pageant, Eiki, Elmo) introduce a slight vertical bounce. The claw timing has the be just right, and even then there is still some movement. Pageants have decent registration, but still show play. The 1950s RCA 400 has very good vertical registration, but if the springs are worn on the lateral pressure guides, then you get horizontal weaving.

In pedestals the old, French-made Hortson G has very good registration if set up properly. Both the Pacific Film Archive and Harvard Film Archive have these machines installed in their booths. The picture is glued to the screen. But you'd want to have a few machines for parts, and it's loud like a cement mixer. I see these machines selling all the time for several hundred bucks, but you need to find a good tech for service (which shouldn't be too difficult in NYC), and be willing to deal with the space the machine takes up. It's not huge, but it's also not a portable.

I would suggest posting your question to... Film-Tech, eFilmcenter, and 16mmfilmtalk.com. There you will get a whole host of good recommendations, or at least enough mixed responses to make your own educated selection. Also, try AMIA's listserv as many archives have their own exhibition programs and staff who are very knowledgeable about projection.

BTW, there's a guy on Film-Tech named Steve Guttag (in Maryland I think) that may be able to sell you something. Most theater supply and service centers have old 16mm projectors laying around from when they yanked a nice 16mm projector from a booth during a modern digital installation.

  5. You should be able to get by just fine with the "pup" tent, but you're safer with the standard (36x) so you have plenty of room to load a 1000' mag of 35mm just in case... The biggest down side of the larger bag is that it doesn't fit on top of a camera cart for loading very easily.

    Thanks for your feedback.

My interest in the smaller tent has to do with loading in situations where I have a limited

amount of space. 26x19 is a big enough foot print for the mag, I was just curious if I'd need that extra

two inches of dome height that the standard tent provides? I thought perhaps the pup tent would

just barely allow the mag door to clear?

I never load 35mm (at least, not anymore), so I'm not too concerned about that, but I may at some

point be loading an 800' 16mm mag.

    Maybe I'll ju$t get both.

  7. I'd like to move from my change bag to a tent.

I thought to get the smaller size tent - 26x19x12 - but wanted to see if anyone thought this

tent was too small for 16mm mags? When I marked the dimension out on a table it seemed

large enough, but maybe the - 36x27x14 - size allows the process to feel less "cramped".

At $200 a pop I didn't want to waste money making a bad choice. I've bought change bags that were just

a little too small, so I wanted to avoid that... but I thought the dome might allow a smaller size than

what feels good with a change bag.

  9. I looked through the archive and could find no comparison of these lenses, so forgive me if it's there and

    I simply missed it.

Does anyone have experience with both the Angenieux 11.5-138 and Canon's version of this lens? I'm curious not only about sharpness and contrast, but edge performance, as well as performance in the long end above 50mm, and distortion/flare issues.

Appreciate any help as I found several good deals on each of these lenses and looking to make a decision.
