How is felt about shine?

I am wanting to get a backdrop to use in some of my student projects and was considering ordering a black muslin backdrop from a photography website. Since i'm a complete novice I really don't know much about the fabric options and wanted to know what the thickness of Muslin is. I am hoping it is somewhat substantial and will be unlikely to fold or crease or blow around, but the impression I get is that it isn't much more than a bedsheet.

I am wanting to purchase an inexpensive green screen and was wanting to know what my options are. I had read that muslin cloth can be used for a cheap solution but want to know how well it works. Also as far as lighting how do you use a chroma key such as a green screen? Would I need to get uniform light on the screen in order for it to work properly, and if so what are some good ways to achieve this? Also it is worth noting that I am a student so my experience with (and budget for) most techniques is limited.
