  1. It seems to me that if the transfer device could do this, then it could also be set to run at 24fps and transfer the frames 1:1, which is what I was originally envisioning. Sounds like this isn't possible. But I would be interested in hearing the mechanics of the transfer machine, if Rob hasn't tired of my questions yet.
  2. Thanks for all the info guys - really helpful. I own both FCS 5.1 and AE CS3 Pro (a nice benefit of having worked in Silicon Valley). So is there any consensus on whether After Effects is better/worse than Cinema Tools for pulldown removal? If I use After Effects there are a few settings I need: is the upper or lower field first? What is the phase of the pulldown - options are WSSWW, SSWWW, SWWWS, WWWSS or WWSSW. And should I change the pixel aspect ratio here from square to anamorphic or do that at a later stage? Thanks again for the input.
  3. I recently had a transfer done from Super16 to digital. It was uncompressed 10-bit standard definition, to a QuickTime file on an external hard drive. I was expecting a non-telecine transfer (24p), but I got back a standard 29.97 telecine QT video. When I asked the transfer guy at the lab, he said that SD 24p transfers don't exist - that only happens in HD. I am not doubting his veracity, but I wanted some more info on why SD 24p non-telecine transfers to video can't be done - why does it have to be in HD? I didn't get a chance to discuss all the technical aspects of this with him. Thanks for any info.
  4. I am using an Arri SRII to for filming, and have a 100' roll of film on daylight spool that I want to use in the camera. Will things work "ok" with just putting the daylight spool of film in the magazine (other than the tensioner arm not contacting the film), or should I transfer it to a core first? Thanks for the advice.
  5. Thanks for the info - I ended up going with DeWitt Stern. $225 out the door for $40K insurance for a weekend. What I found out after the fact, was that there is a $500 deductible - I should have been told that up front. Fortunately, I didn't need to use it.
  6. Sweet. Microgramma it is. Thanks for the speedy replies! -Conrad
  7. Yes - it is close to Bank Gothic. I was looking for something with a heavier stroke. But thanks for getting closer...
  8. I should say my current short list is CineLab, ColorLab, Magno and DuArt. If you have any other place you particularly love, please let me know that too.
  9. I am in the middle of production of a short film, being shot on Super 16mm. I would like to get either some sort of uncompressed SD xfer to digital, or some HD xfer. Ideally, the xfer facility would ship it to me on a hard drive, so I can sit down at Final Cut Pro and "just start editing." Can people my recommendations for/against any labs? I am exploring options right now, seeing what the costs are as well. I only have access to a beta deck right now, so if that's my only option I won't cry. As mentioned, the ideal situation would be to have the transfer back on a hard drive at 24p. I am in Ohio, so I guess I am more inclined to look at east-coast options. Thanks for any pointers.
  10. I want this '70's-looking font for my titles. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any help is appreciated - thanks. -Conrad
  11. I am renting an Arri SR II for a shoot. My homeowner's insurance covers things like theft from house or car, but not damage. I have a shoot coming up which is on a pond. I hate to think of what could happen if it fell in the drink. Can anyone recommend an underwriter which will keep me safe from a potential $30K bill? Thanks for any pointers. -Conrad
  12. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum; please redirect me if that is the case. Is there some handy cheat-sheet on the Internets which lists the "usual" order for credits to be displayed in a film, both up-front and at the end? I am about to go into production on a short indie, non-union film with about 12 actors and 10 crew, and am just thinking ahead to post. I would like to make the credits look "usual"/'professional". Any pointers appreciated - thanks. -Conrad
  13. I am a rural indie (I guess that's redundant) filmmaker, in the hills of eastern Ohio. I am currently making a short film, for which most of the crew/cast is working gratis. However, I was not getting anyone for the female lead with existing enticements, so I broke down and am now offering financial compensation. (I was clear up-front that most cast/crew would not be getting paid $ for this project.) We will be filming 2-3 days and she will be needed for most of the scenes, so: what is a "fair" amount to pay the actress? I of course want to keep my budget to a minimum, but I don't want to insult her with a too-low offer. Any advice welcome - thanks for the input. -Conrad
  14. Title says it all - I need an Arri SR camera to rent for 1-2 days ASAP. Would like to be in NE/Central OH or Western PA, so I can pick it up myself. Please email filminfo@campredo.com or call 740-545-2222. Thanks! -Conrad
  15. I recently purchased a used Minolta 5º viewfinder for my Konica Minolta Auto Meter VF. So I know I am using it correctly - what do the circle and two dots in the viewfinder represent? Is the circle the 5º? Thanks for the clarification. -Conrad
