  1. I use a Eclair NPR and I can see the whole Ultra16mm frame.

Bernie added new marks on the groundglass

What camera are you thinking of converting?

  2. Hey I recently shot a short film on the Red one cam

The producer now wants to submit the film into some festivals

but some of these festivals only take a 35mm print

Ive never done a 35mm print before,so Im not sure how to go about getting it done?

how much could this cost for a 8 minute film with sound?

any help would be appreciated,Im totally new to this, and have no idea where to start?

    thanks:)

  3. If indeed Avatar proves to be a trendsetter (as opposed to a one off that only spawns a small group of followers, like 3D), why not have separate awards? You could have one for Cinematography in a film comprised of less than XX percent CG, and for films comprising more than XX percent? This would resolve the debate, and open up new films (like some of Pixars recent efforts) that, while largely generated by computer, are still worthy of consideration for their visual choices and style.

    Thoughts?

    BR

I totally agree with you Brian

there should be 2 categories now for cinematgraphy

  4. I still havnt seen the white ribbon

but right now Im really hoping the Hurt locker wins best cinematography

I just thought the 16mm photography looked so good.

I would think hand held war film would be over done, but it worked very well for that film.

  5. Avatar deserves a nomination for the revolutionary 3D cinematography used in it and how it will change the art and craft of cinematography. However, what was Vince Pace's role during the production of Avatar? Aside from helping to design the camera system, according to IMDB he is credited as Director of Photography: Los Angeles, not as a second unit DP.

Either way is it possible for two DPs to share a nomination?

last year Chris Menges and Roger deakins shared a nomination for the Reader

But both those DOP shot large portions of the film, and where under the main unit

Im not sure what Vince pace shot, but it probably wasn't much in the grand scheme of things?

otherwise Im sure they would of credited both Muro and vince together?

Also I enjoy 3D but I really dont think Aavatar changed the craft of cinematography?

most of what I found to be spectacular about the movie was the 3D CGI

  6. Has anyone ever used the black matthews C-stands? I am interested in purchasing a few and I love the idea of being able to hide c-stands in dark areas of the sets. The thing i'm worried about is the back finish chipping/scraping off over time.

    Anyone have experience with these?

yeah there great, Ive had no problems with them chipping

    I wish I had more black c-stands

  7. Saying that "Avatar" is only half CG is masterful understatement. Might as well nominate video games for the award, next

Well you know with more and more films having CGI maybe there should be a 2nd category for best cinematography in a CGI film?

  8. Well the ASC awards where just announced

    heres the list

    Nine

    inglorious basterds

    the white ribbon

    Avatar

    the hurtlocker

I was a little surprised Avatar got nominated?

I really enjoyed the film, but more than half the film is CGI

I really didnt think too much of the live action photography?

    Anyways what are your thoughts?

  9. Yes, that was my bad. I was thinking Bernie and wrote Brian instead (because I was looking at other forums at the same time and names got mixed around in my head).

The thing is, for 100 dollars more than Bernie's Ultra16 conversion, I have a Super16 conversion from Les, and I'm really curious about the quality of HIS work, since it would ultimately mean a better value for the money and more options in processing/transfer.

oh I missed that part about getting super16 for only a 100 more

Well I never seen any of les boshers work so I cant help you there

it does seem like a good deal?

Bernie does do great work though

  10. Wondering if anyone knows anything, good or bad, about Mr. Bosher's work -- either through personal experience or second hand experience. I've searched the forum's and his name comes up a bit, but I can't find anything definitive about his Super16mm conversions.

I recently bought an Eclair ACL 1.5 and I'm giving serious thought to having Brian O'Doherty convert it to Ultra16mm, though I've noticed -- when converted from GBP to dollars -- Les' Super16mm conversion comes in at only $100 more than Brian's Ultra16mm conversion.

It's tempting as hell to ship my camera off to England for conversiom.

    Any thoughts/etc.?

I got my eclair upgraded to ultra16 by Bernie O'doherty

I assume we're talking about the same person?

Anyways he did a great job on it, and he really knows what he is doing.

Id say dont ship your camera to England save your money and go with Bernie
