  1. Dont you usually get great DoF with a Z1, Infact how does one get reduced DoF on a Z1, considering it has a smaller sensor size one usually has to settle in for a great DoF

    Color Chip Chart

Hi, I wanted to know is it really a good practice to use a color chip chart( like the one from dsc labs.)?, What is it precisely? And If it is really beneficial to use one why arent they really used in video or HD shoots? Also, could you kindly guide me as to how to setup a color chip chart, light it, and where shld the colors lie on the vectorscope? Thanks
  3. Thanks Didnt figure out that! Will the Hyperfocal distance be affected if I pull back my camera. I think it shldnt for everything from half of that distance to infinity will be in focus. Am I right?
  4. David Thanks a Lot. That was very informative. Just one more thing. By a Long Shutter Speed, you mean Shorter Shutter Speeds( 1/6,1/12), right?
  5. Hello, I know this is not exactly the forum for this query, but since I am not sure there is exactly a forum for such an ambiguous query I decided to post it in this forum since it receives the maximum hits. Hope you dont mind. I have a two shot where we show two obese talents relishing their burgers... The background is in focus...So a great DoF I next want to pull back from the fast food chain to show a group of poor people staring at those guys... These impoverished people are standing with their backs to the camera...I again want a high DoF here coz I want both the impoverished grop as well as the obese guys to be in perfect focus. Question 1: Shld I set the lens to the hyperfocal distance? Will pulling back affect the hyperfocal distance? Or Shld I just go with a normal lens(50mm) coz it have everything in apparent focus? kindly help me figure the mechanics of this shot. Thank you. And yeah there is Glass in between the two groups...So how do I pullback, I'd want it to be one single shot with no cuts.
  6. hello Cld someone Kindly help me out here, please???
  7. Hey ya Actually I searched a few docs and found that the data rate of DigiBeta is 90Mbps as opposed to 25Mbps of DV. So that does make DigiBeta better than Dv? Is data rate the only criteria? And what abt tape or tapeless recording of video. Thnx

    Sensitivity

But Stephen, What I wanna know is what is the reason for calibrating them at 89.9% reflectance and why can it not be graded like film at 18% gray? And what do u mean by they are two stops faster? Thanx

    Sensitivity

I have been reading manuals of various digital cameras and one point where I come to a grinding hault is when the Sensitivity is mentioned. For instance, f/11 @ 2000 lux (3200K, 89.9% reflectance) Now why are digital cameras rated in this manner and why is 89.9% reflectance mentioned, is it bec. digital sensors are rated according to white card or what??? Kindlu help me figure this out. I have posted this query earlier in other forums but unfortunately got no response from the community. I am sanguine abt success this time. Thank You.
  10. hello, I have a few questions regarding tape formats and recording data. First. whether the quality of DigiBeta is better than DV? Second, What is the data rate of DigiBeta? Lastly is direct hard disk recording better than tape acquisition, even if a tape that records data without any compression is used? Thank you.
  11. Hi, I was recently working on a Sony PD170 recently, and I decided that I needed a stroboscopic effect for some of the shots. To get a stuttering look means faster shutter speeds, so I promptly increased my shutter speed from 1/50 to 1/200, the light intensity reduced but I didnt get the desired effect. Then I set the shutter to 1/6 and was surprised to see the result I desired. But how is this possible? Shouldnt the effect have taken place at higher shutter speeds akin to narrow shutter angles? Kindly clear the doubt Thanks

  13. I was reading an article on Gamma where it states that: Gamma has a major effect on image brightness, contrast, hue, and color saturation. Image Brightness and Contrast are percievable but how does it affect Hue And Color Saturation? Kindly let me know. Thanks.

  15. Hi, I've often heard people say that they prefer B&W viewfinders because they help them in judging the focus better. How does a B&W viewfinder help in making critical focus decisions easier????????

    Digital Lenses

Hello, Just wanted to know whether the Digital camera Lenses are designed essentially for a smaller focal plane ( a 2/3'' CMOS sensor vs a 35mm film) or there any other factors that detrmine the existence of these lenses for digital acquisition. Can one use a 35mm camera lens on a digital camera with a 2/3'' sensor... Some say this is not possible because of the Image circle the 35mm format lens will create... Kindly Post. Thanks Ashim
  18. Why do generally all cameras have a S/N ratio of 54 dB, The higher the S/N ratio the better isnt it? Then why not go above 54 dB?
  19. Why do cinematographers generally prefer to overexpose their stock by a stop???
  20. Hey thanks for acquainting me to Cinefex...Its really what I wanted, cutting edge vfx... Hope I will have a few vfx tips to share after this... Thanks also for the ASC articles, though I am a regularly scan its online articles...But I did miss the ones u mentioned.... So Thanks Ashim
  21. Hi, I desire a low key, high contrast look for a shot in a room lit with 3200K. Now I'll most certainly create the effect by lighting the room according to the look desired. But I know I am gonna be pressed for time and it is a fairly large room. I am going to use a Sony HVR Z1, is there any way that changing the gamma can get me closer to the required effect and in effect accentuate and better the look. Thinking of increasing the Gamma... How far should I go. Thanks.

Hi, Whats the difference between print to video and Edit to tape...Heard in HDV you can use only one of the two...dont remember which one. Kindly update. Thanks

    Film Scan

And isnt the LUT based on the stock used for the shoot. What if I use different stocks for the shoot??? And once the images have been color corrected we do a reverse scan on a new negative? Cant we do it directly on the positive?
