  1. Hi everyone, I'm Erin and while I've been lurking as a guest for quite some time, I finally decided to post a question that's been plaguing me. Just an FYI; I'm nearly done with my undergraduate studies in cinematography and have been shooting a great deal of S16, but am trying to learn about video more and more as well. Here goes: What does it mean when I read (in regards to video) 4:4:4, or 4:2:2, or 4:1:1, or............what's this in reference to, what do those numbers mean, one versus the other, etc? What are some of the combinations one is inclined to come across, advantages, disadvantages.......... What's linear versus log; as in, 8 bit linear, 10 bit log, etc? Again, what are some combinations I'm likely to find? What's DPX stand for? I've been trying to research this on my own, but to no avail, and I see these pop up more and more and I feel woefully out of my league when they do. What do these numbers mean for production AND for post? Also, if anyone can point me to a definitive resource to learn from for these, that would be wonderful. Thanks so much for any help and I'm glad to finally be "official". Erin
