  1. Hey all,

    First Posting.

I am a Junior film student and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles.

I am gearing up for two Super16 shoots this semester, and was curious what some people think of my limited selection of work that I have, since I am starting up.

I am happy with how my website has come out through .mac. Sadly buttons and such don't stay in cache:

    basic reel:

    http://www.dainsworth.com/Daniel_Ainsworth...matography.html

(the file is a 10 meg ish, firefox tends to wait for the whole file to download before playing. I'm trying the figure the best way to compress, etc.)

Any feedback on my website, photography, or reel would be appreciated. Tips? Anything not do it for you?

    Have a good day everyone,

    -Daniel

Hey man nice site. I worked with you on the "piano" project, you key griped for me. Not sure if you remember. Anyway your site looks nice, cant get the reels to load though....might be something on my end.

  2. That sounds like a codec issue. I had a similar problem and if memory serves I had to download and install a codec from Panasonic's website. It could also be something with FCP (if it's an old version) or with the burn, but the symptoms are identical to missing coded symptoms.

This is what is says when I try and play it in FCP 5.1 :

"codec not found. you may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card"

    What do I do?

    thanks!

  3. Were all the files (.mxf and .txt) copied over to the DVD or just the .mxf files? The clips may not open in FCP without the .txt files.

The files are already QT/FCP movie files, it just wont open? It sometimes gives me a message that I do not have the right hardware to meet the software? Ive heard its a codec issue, and if it is, I dont really know what to do?

    thanks

    marc

  4. Hi, I cant seem to play HD files from the hvx200 p2 cards in Final cut or Quick time. The cards have already been downloaded and put into FCP on another computer, the files were then burned to a DVD.

When I put the DVD in my system, it wont play the files, its just white, theres audio, but no video. Is it some kind of codec issue? or hardware issue. Im using a macbook pro with QT pro and FCP 5.1

    Any help will help.

  5. I assume you don't literally mean "fill" from the indoor lights, lower in level than the moonlight?

What ASA are you shooting at? Is using the practical lights out of the question?

Im Shooting the 5217 200T for daytime and 5218 500t for the Night.

Also, are the 1200 Firestarers globes Daylight balenced. Are there daylight globes for a Ruby 7 or Maxi Brute?

  6. You say the action takes place in a gym daytime afternoon and night ? do you intend to light through these windows what ever time of day the scenes take place ?

I do, obviously for the night scenes, it will change quite a bit, as i dont need the windows to blow out, and I will not need so many lamps out side, but certainly for the daytime and afternoon, probally just 1/2 CTO for afternoon to warm it up, and maybe a little haze.

For the night scenes I just use the windows as a Moonlight source, to put patterns on the floor and to try and use as a backlight, and use the INT gym lighting for fill which I plan on using 2k or 6k spacelights, or if anyone has any suggestion on lighting the interior, I was thinking using 8 or so 2k spacelights and hanging them, trying to keep the natrul feel of overhead lights in gyms.

    Thanks,

    marc

  7. Hi, Im shooting a short in few weeks where we will be in a gym, on one side of the gym there are a row of 8 large windows, maybe 8x8 in size. My question is what is the best way to get hard edge controlable daylight comming through. Ideally I would want( 8) 12k or 18kHMIPars, however, as usuall production does not have the dough. Would (8) 12 light maxibrute be just as good, or would I lose that punch that I would get with a HMI par. I need something controlable as a good deal of the film takes place in the gym during the daytime, afternoon and night. Any help is much apprecited.

    thanks

  8. Im trying to go for a daytime, desaturated, cool look with muted colors. ill check those out.

Hoo-boy. Tons. Pools, let's see; Swimfan, Cruel Intensions, Dark City...

I know David Mullen has included pools and gyms in several of his movies; both in The Quiet, a gym in Astronaut Farmer...

Maybe it would help if we knew what kind of look you were going for.

  11. Hey does anyone have any suggestions for gelling windows. I need to gel windows that are 4 feet by 6 feet and it needs to be more permanent than water and a squeegy. Im essentially making my own hard gels. A bunch of plexi glass has been purchased and that is what the ND needs to be stuck to and then that will be attached to the window. Ive tested a few methods with no luck. Any ideas or suggestions would be fantastic.

    Thanks,

    andrew

Ive seen some guys mix dish soap and water and spray it on the glass and then squiggie the gel on, it sticks easily and its easy to pull off.

  12. Rates vary wildy. Typical union scale (bottom) on a low-budget feature (1 to 6 mil) is around $3500/week but usually it's actually higher due to long days.

I started out shooting 1/2 mil features for about $1000/wk to around $1600/wk. One week of paid prep, usually a three-week shoot, so I'd average about $6000 total per feature and if I were lucky, I'd shoot three of those a year. That was a decade ago, though.

You always figure that the lowest they can really offer a crew member is a paltry $100/day, so if your typical grip or 2nd AC is making that, then your keys are being offered closer to $200/day, so the DP may be offered $300/day. Of course, many keys add to this amount by renting out their equipment, something I didn't really do as a DP.

This is the bottom end of paid low-budget feature work of course.

Hearing your response is really quite refreshing, after shooting a few no-low budge features, music videos/commercials and shorts its nice to know there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Your work is really inspirational.

    best,

    marc

  13. You're asking a question that currently has no answer. When Reds start shipping then people might know when they'll have them. Hopefully that will happen next month, but nothing is set in stone. It's probably not very smart to base future production plans on speculation. If you need to shoot something soon, you would do well to consider equipment that is already available.

yeah I understand that 100%, i think the production company is all about this RED, and it seems like a good choice for the script, but I agreecompletly, I could shoot with other cameras that are readily available....Thanks though.
