  1. eric Do you think it is also important to understand DV for aspiring DPs?? I thought your comment was interesting and it is something i have just started looking into. Infact i shot my first 50 feet of film the other day (super 8...very excited about it). I have been playing around with DV for about 3 years and i try to light it in a way that i think looks pleasing but i do not really know what i am doing. I just kinda look through the viewfinder and if it looks like something remotely close to something i have seen in a film i go with it. but i feel like this is cheating sometimes. maybe that is not the right word but maybe you may understand what i mean. DV gives you the results right there but i really want to learn how to accomplish the same thing with film. I also noticed that when i was shooting the Super 8 the other day i was highly selective about my composition. I am interested in how it will look when i get it back.
  2. Hello all. i was hoping that some of you could educate me further on some of the cinematographers that were most influencial in the past. I think i am pretty familiar with most of the big names of the past few decades but i feel my knowledge of the great cinematographers of the 30s, 40s, and 50s is very weak. Basically i just thought some of you could list some important films and DPS that would be important/enjoyable to look into. Anything past or present would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  3. I have always been interested in the filmmaking process and just movies in general. When i was younger (22 now) i wanted to be an actor because that is what i thought movies were. then after seeing Casino and Taxi Driver i wanted to be a director, or atleast i started to understand what it was i loved about moives. But the film that really inspired me and has ignited a passion in me was Road To Perdition. I walked out of that theater just feeling great. i had no idea why until those images just kept replaying in my mind for weeks. i just loved it. i realized what is was about movies that i liked and since then i have been trying to get my hands on as much information on cinematography as possible. I was very sad to hear of Conrad Hall's passing especially when i just felt like i had discovered something amazing.
