  1. Hey I am reluctantly selling my set of Lomo anamorphic lenses.

    35mm 1:2. 50mm 1:2 75mm 1:2 100mm 1:2.8
I had them converted to PL mount when I bought them, then serviced at Focus Optics
Markings are metric but there's taped imperial markings from the rental house where they were stored.
They are in very good condition with no fungus and are optically in great order.
I purchased these lenses soon after shooting this
Note: this was shot on my friend's lomos.
I loved the look so much that convinced me to purchase a set myself.
I used these lomos for element shoots for vfx on my feature The Last Days on Mars.
They've been in storage most of the time I've owned them so not had the opportunity to use them as much as I would have liked.
They are great lenses and I don't really want to part with them but ya know how it is...
    Pelican case included.
    $44k USD OBO

  2. What elevates Conan are the movies it is paying homage to, at least in design, camera placement, editing: Seven Samurai and Alexander Nevsky in particular. After the village is destroyed in the opening, the warriors slowly take off their helmets in front of Conan's mother in a direct homage to Nevsky when the Teutonic Knights take off their helmets.

    Agree

Compositions are very strong in this movie.

Score is one of the greatest of all time.

    Story is great.

It's a little cheesy but I love that about it too.

It's probably the best "bad" movie of all time.

  3. Thanks for the response David. How about cropping vs 2x anamorphic squeeze?

I will be doing tests in week or so but would love to get as much feedback from any ones experiences as I can before then.

Don't think Alexa has anamorphic support enabled yet.

  4. Well, yes. Three cheers for that article and its consistently factual correctness.

Maybe they should make a far larger number of much cheaper movies, enabling greater risk-taking.

Costs so much to market movies now, that making more movies for less per movie doesn't make sense under the studio business model. This is because movies have become dependent on opening weekend. Which means big marketing spend.

  5. Bust their arses, in a chair?

Yes, actually, working 18 hours a day for six months, with no breaks, sitting down, is pretty physically destructive. This is not a 9 to 5 job like working in a bank, where people just do the job and forget about it in evenings and weekends. Since there is no VFX union, getting a credit on screen is one of the few carrots they can dangle to talented artists, to make them work in what is pretty much a sweatshop.

Mate. Every job is important. I did mention sparks as well. But if we are staying on the subject, why does all the orchestra from the score not get named? Are you going to compare a Violinist of 20 years to a Junior Data Wrangler? Freya was right I think, they have no idea what the VFX people all do, that's why they get away with murder on the fee!!!!

You appear to have no idea what VFX people do, therefore, you are wrongly assuming they get away with... whatever it is you think they are getting away with.

CafeFX, one of the major vfx companies that worked on Alice, is closing its doors because effects companies don't make much money.

Sparks get credited. Musicians should be credited if they are not. By far the largest list of uncredited workers on the movie you mentioned is for people working on VFX. Go ahead, check on imdb.

  6. Never said that did I??? But SO many of the shooting crew never get a credit. Bust their arses, in a chair?

You are comparing "mac monkeys" to runners, like there is any comparison whatsoever to the level of skill and talent it takes to do one job vs the other.

  7. Hello all

In my Christmas Turkey filled stupor I watched a lot of big budget movies on TV (most of 'em pretty good I guess) One I watched was Tim Burton's Charlie and the chocolate factory. Back in my day as a stills photographer I worked on this film, enjoyed it very much, made some great friends. Some of which I work with now in my role as a DOP, Sparks and grips etc. Now there were many working on this film (including the ones I work with now) in all sorts of roles, big and small. All in their way important to the finished film. So why is it that so many of them are NOT included in the closing credits? And can someone tell me why so many people are mentioned from VFX? Every Mac monkey gets a nod. WHY? What about all the runners, the hair and make-up on dailies, Sparks and trainees. The guys down the lab, the prep guys at the rental house, they all make the film. Why do we need to know the name of every Data wrangler and not every spark? It's not just Charlie that's guilty of this, just that I was there and worked with so many that are not mentioned.

Am I the only one that wonder why VFX guys get so much exposure or have I just eaten to many mince pies?

Wow, you are arguing people that bust their asses working insane hours for months and months on a movie should not get credit. Nice.

  8. Dear all,

I've been asked to DP a music video. The director is a nice guy, but he's giving me technical advice how to shoot the video, what gear and type of camera to use. Im open for advice and ideas, but not when the director is telling me technical things that are incorrect. This is a bit frustrating. I've tried to explain him in a gentle way that what he claims, is not quite true, but he's being obstinate and doesn't want to listen. I know that if i shoot the video using the technique he mentioned, it won't match what his artistic ideas, in other words it won't work or do it's job. It's a bit frustrating and i don't really know how to handle this situation... i can't mess up our cooperation, but i also can't do what he says because i know that it won't work... Has anyone experienced this before, and if so what would you advice?

    Thanks

What, specifically is he saying that is incorrect?

  9. I think it boils down to this. Even if you have a lot of talent, most of the time you will not be taken seriously unless you have the picture quality to showcase your talent. In the past no one would even look at your work unless it was shot on 35mm film. Now due to the fact that Epic films are being shot using digital cameras a film maker is almost guaranteed an audition when he presents his trailer to a producer for financial backing or the producer has to come up with another excuse to exclude the film maker.

Right now a digital film maker can argue that the picture quality is greater than a conventional 35mm film production.

    1. A digital 3-D production is already commanding higher ticket prices than a 2-D film production although film cameras can also be used for 3-D production.

I think people care more if the story is good.

  10. During the 1970's a Pacer power plant was developed that uses the power derived from peaceful thermonuclear hydrogen bomb explosions in order to harness fusion power. If Helium 3 fuel is used instead of hydrogen no radiation would be produced making these power plants much safer and cleaner than any conventional fission power plant. Although many find lighting off atomic bombs to be obscene in reality a pure fusion bomb is not really a self contained bomb at all but requires the use of a billion dollar super laser in order to achieve ignition. Therefore these devices would not be practical as weapons and would not encourage nuclear proliferation. As a matter of fact a carbon free Helium-3 Pacer power plant would save the Earth from becomming a Venus like global warming inferno and billions of lives would be saved.

    Sorry, what's the topic again?

  11. Thank you for your response. I think collaboration is the right word, because everyone will benefit from it. I'm the author of the novel The Champion and it's available in Barnes and Noble and the Amazon.com. We're on the planning stage of making a script into a film. There is no budget yet. But we'd like to know who may be interested. The script is titled Running Rogue in L.A. Synopsis of the scipt will be e-mailed upon request.

Did you actually read his response?

  12. with all due respect mr. robinson... when you dont have all the facts, reserve your judgment... and dont label people "disrespectful" and say they aren't "doing much to make life easier for him" when in fact, you don't know me or the director personally... we are actually good friends outside of work and I've been trying earnestly to help him find his "tone"... he has actually outwardly said himself that he doesn't feel he's a good director... so yes - I put "director" in quotes because he's admitted to having a hard time finding his "direction" - but he's not making it any easier for those who are trying to help him because he doesn't seem to want help...

the fact of the matter is that he is undermining me... and after trying to help him, he tries to make up for his inability to voice himself by trying to do something he has absolutely no idea how to do... THAT actually slows things down and wastes everyone's time...

i'm just laying out the current scenario and asking for thoughts...

so please mr. robinson - to be quite frank - i think YOU are being quite disrespectful by making such a quick and uninformed judgment on me.

maybe because you're a director yourself - you may take offense to me putting "director" in quotes - but being a director of your stature i'm sure you've come across conflict... and conflict resolution is a part of the game... but i don't need to tell you that since you've been nominated for an oscar, right?

"i'm just laying out the current scenario and asking for thoughts..."

"when you dont have all the facts, reserve your judgment"

I assume you are familiar with the phrase "Cognitive dissonance". Perhaps you could word your posts better to avoid confusion and wasted time in the future, as I can only judge based on the information you have provided.

Do you want people's opinions or not? Or do you just want people to respond that agree with you, and tell you how wonderful you are? Oh that stupid director idiot, how dare he change the color of the wall in the background of a shot in a film he's directing if doesn't know how to a computer or use DaVinci Resolve? He's obviously unqualified to work with actors, or decide on the color of walls! That more like it?

And how dare he do a "slight re-edit!" He must think he's the director or something... oh... wait.
