  1. Chris I think i'm getting it now. Your last comments about the eveness that par doesnt provide were cool. Any more observations there? Do Par's perform better on windows rather than pretty faces?Great info!! Going to stop saying normal hmi......just hmi and hmi par? QD
  2. Thanks for your quick reply. Im still not sure, but what i've understood that the normal hmi uses a fresenel lens and had a wider spread. The hmi uses a par bulb but has external lenses that control the beam of light ( like you said ). So lets take a 4K normal and a 4k hmi par. The differences- lamphead different, voltage different, lamp type different. Yes most fixtures used are par like you said. But you would go with the normal hmi if you needed less punch? Your right about the imagination bit. Hope you will add more to this. Thanks QD
  3. Hi Whats the difference between a hmi and a hmi par? can anyone link me to documents that will explain this. What different scenes could both these light s be used in? Thanks Q D
  4. Hi Can anyone tell me the difference between all the filters. How much light do you loose? What is the type of diffussion you get from them? If im using 216 on a wide. what would i use for a cu? Thanks in advance

  6. Hi Is there a formula to tell you how many fc you will get from a fixture at a certain distance? Ive read up on the Inverse square law, and i know that if you chose your stop for a certain asa, you have the fc info on the can. But suppose i was short of people to move lights around and i wanted to get the lights in the right position ... is there a formula to tell me that if i put a 10k 20 ft from a subject...i will get x fc??? Thanks
  7. Hi Im looking out for the lightmeters pdf that was is supposed to be on the sekonic website (http://www.sekonic.com/Cinematographer_booklet.pdf). It doesnt seem to be there anymore. I could buy it on amazon.com but im saving up for my meter!! Could anyone tell me where i could get the pdf??? Thanks
  8. Thanks Richard Im going to take some time and have a look at your site and all the links there.
  9. Hi I have read that all lights used in motion pictures need a CRI of > 90. What are the other things that you need to look into when trying out new lighting fixtures? Im talking about the cheap ones that you can buy at a hardware store. They all have some info on the label. Some of them have things like CRI and watts/ lumen. What else should i be lookin out for? Thanks
  10. Hi Ive been reading up on the Kodak products guide. I noticed that 16 mm color neg films have both one edge and two edge perforations. 35 mm does not. What is the difference? How does this relate to 4 perf and 3 perf? Ive read on arri.com that 3 perf is more economical. What does the movement of a camera have to do with all this? From what ive read in the ac manual, all the 35 mm cameras are dual registration. The only difference is in the pull down claws ( 1, 2 or 3). what about 16mm? How do i change from 3 perf to 4 perf in camera? trying to make sense of this....Hope the questions have been put forward properly... Thanks
  11. Thanks!!!!!!! I think im getting a hang of this now...i really need to get my hands on the camera assistants manual!! Thanks Again Laurent
  12. Hi I am confused about f stop scales and how to set your stop on the barrel. How do you understand the math for 1/2, 1/3, 1/10 stops ( on an analog and digital meter)? How do you set the stop on the lens after the measurements have been made? So far ive been rounding things off. I want to start to get more accurate. Also, what is the correct way to communicate the readings? Could someone take the time to explain this? Thanks
  13. Im looking at trying to shoot time Lapse in high def. What are the frame rates availiable? Do i need any external gear to do frame rates like 5 seconds per frame. What do i have to do in post. Are the frame rate settings easy to key in using a varicam? Quinten Densak Student
  14. Hi i recently took a photo of a big building at sunset. I metered the sky f 2.8 at 1/4 sec exposure. I exposed it at f16 for 30 seconds. Using the 1/exposure time= shutter/360xfps ( 180 shutter at 24 fps with an exposure time of 30 seconds) . I work out that i will need a 17.28 degree shutter for a similar exposure or 1/15 fps. I know that i can get 17.28 shutter on most 35mm film cameras. My question is how does i get 1/15 fps? thanks for all your help till now Quinten densak Student
  15. fps tells you how many frames you shoot per second eg. 24fps = 24 frames per second seconds per frame is how much time a frame takes up temporally eg. 1/24 = 0.0416666... seconds[ Thanks Nick and Steven If i expose 24 frames per second shooting 24fps, When i expose at 1 frame ps, how many/much of the frame am i using? Also: does 98 fps capture more information than 24 fps? Nick, you mentioned the nd 3.0. I read up on that and i now know that nd .3 is 1 stop compensation. so if im reading f 22 on my meter, 9 stops would be f 1 correct? Thanks you for your help. I hope you cam answer my other two questions
  16. Could someone please explain the difference please. Also, what are the rules for exposure compensation for high and low speed shooting. I know you need to open up 1 stop shooting at 48 fps. What about 12 fps? Hopefully and greatfully Quinten d Student
  17. Thanks for the info Brian. I will look out for the books you mentioned. I also bought The cutting edge documentary. It was really good. Have you seen the american express advertisement that i was referring to? Another question please. If i was shooting clouds rolling across the sky at 6 fps, i would expose at 2 stops down? Thank you Quinten Student
  18. Hello what is a good book to understand editing and the possiblilities it offers a cameramen. I am in the middle of understanding the basics of cinematography. But id like to know how to shoot with the edit in mind. My intrest is in advertisements like the american express (animals) ad by big sky effects. I saw the making of it.
