  1. Dude, Don't even complain. I just got off a show on the HVX200 with the "RedRock cinema adapter" and Nikon prime lenses. Let me put it this was, after this show I could do anything.

The red rock adapter was not Attatched to the camera's front filter threading, it was guided by the support rods and we had to just keep checking its allignment, that was the first issue. That lasted for the first 2 weeks then I said we needed to do it right and we got the adapter to make it solid.

My lenses were Nikon primes and the marks were 100% useless, I had no real Follow focus!, and because of all this crap on the camera we were always WFO indoors, and usually at 55 mil, and 135mm to 200mils for the punch ins, It was tough. But I was introduced to Zen-Focusing.

Here is my suggestion to you, and what worked for me.

On the MCU this should be easy, but on the CU and ECU's it's tricky. It requires a lot of concentration.

Focus the static* subject, then roll the focus back and forth and get a feel for the lens. Find out the furthest you'd need to go and the closest. (I was pulling from the berrel as I had no FF and maybe on the CU a good thing) Do this while looking into the monitor if available, otherwise the viewfinder works, but not as good for obvious reasons.

Then watch the action of the subject and compensate with the mental lens marks you should have in your head, by feel of your wrist rotation. I zen'd Half of the movie and I didnt get one complaint of a soft shot, all the dailies were sharp. I actually got rewarded with a bonus for how much was sharp, as the DP expected pulling focus on the rig would be nearly impossible.

I did it, I have complete faith in you.

    Good luck,

    Allen

If anyone else is interested, I have many many stories about the rig, as well as pictures and advice.

One last tip, If it's possible share the monitor with the DP, if available that is. And isntead of eyeballing distances in front of the camera, Use the subject SIZE in the frame be a good reference...

  2. Lube? I listen to a lot of Foreign music, Russian, German, Dutch, anything I can get my hands on. It serves as a great learning tool to any language. I can speak a little russian and I like his music. I did do what most suggested and a few things I wanted to do so here is another cut. Please let me know if it is better. whats bad, what to keep, what to lose...etc.

    Thank you,

  3. Feedback is much appreciated and opinions and recommendations will be considered. I agree with most. Changes are being made and another cut will be up for view shortly. and perhaps I brighten these pictures up for web viewing.

    Again, thank you

  4. I'm not a full-time DOP, though I hope to one day be. While shooting whatever I can, I'm also working as a production assistant, grip, Assistant Camera - basically whatever I can do that pays and lets me stay on set.

In addition, I've got a weekend job with Buena Vista Pictures whereby I perform checks on various movies and trailers for them and report back on audience reaction, quality of prints, presence of marketing material, etc. It's a sweet gig that let's me choose when I want to work and pays me to basically see movies :P

Hook it up, put a good word in for me ey?

  5. what are some of the jobs you guys work currently or before becoming a full time DP?

I just got some job at the local news station editing, I don't like editing especially on tape-tape linear suites, but Im waiting to hopefully become a full time news videographer. is it bad for me to get into the news industry if I know I don't plan to stick with it?

  6. Hi all,

I am shooting a film and I would like recreate a blurred effect like the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan or the woman in the bar waiting in 2046 (which I think is double explosure).

If I open the shutter angle at 11 or even more would I be able to achieve the blurred effect or should I close the shutter angle?

If you can give me any idea let me know.

    Thanks

    V.

standard is at 180 degrees, the lower you go the sharper the image is. 45 degrees is very sharp. maybe you want 210 degrees or so, the only real way to find out what amoun you want is to do a few test. But the closer you get to 360 degrees the more motion blur you get.

  7. I am rather interesting when it comes to music. 90% of the time I don't have a cd in my vehicle containing American music, or in English for that matter. I listen to German music on a regular basis such as:

    Rammstein

    Megaherz

    OOMPH!

    Absolute Beginner

    Blumentopf

    Fettes Brot

    Puhdys

Don't get me wrong, I do listen to a few English singing bands from time to time:

    Nickelback

    Metallica

    SOAD

Thousand foot Krutch (after working with them I found I liked their music)

    Spoken (same story as TFK)

Just don't tell my friends I listen to Nickelback, they might make fun of me <_<

  8. I haven't been on the forum much lately, well I'm happy to announce my reason. I just finished my first PAID feature as a 2nd, yeah...I have to tell somebody...i'm happy and realizing that there is a good chance I'll be able to make money in this industry. I actually quit my dead end job at office depot 5 minutes before my shift when I got the call, then headed to Hollywod. I actually didnt think I'd start getting paid work until I was like 20 or something, or even older...it started to scare me. well anyways, just thought I'd let you all know that I have my first paid S16 feature under my belt, and in the process of shooting a feature on the SDX as a First AC, so hopefuly the next feature I'll DP, not likely, but locked in my prayers...

  9. okay, I'm a little confused at the moment. could be because I'm tired and the chick I'm currently on the phone with is giving me a headache and other problems and she doesnt understand that all I care about at the moment is understanding WHY an anamorphic 100mm(composing for 2.40) lens has the same compositional equivilance to a standard 50mm(composing for 1.85) Lens. can anyone explain this to me a little, I'd really appreciate it...

    thanks,

  10. You see why it's important that people sign their posts with their real names?  People who use pseudonyms often feel empowered to be rude because there's no consequences.

Consequences? You going to hunt him down and beat his ass? Can I shoot it? ahh, I can see it now, I'd get a techno crane for this. It would be awesome.

Yes, I do see the significance of what you speak of.

  11. Thanks for the replies, appreciated.

What if, the XL1s had a adapter on it and you put a variety of different lenses, would it be worth it?  Would the recording quality be overall better on the DV500 comparing to the XL with a better lens?

    James.

Like the P+S Technik mount with some primes? I'd take the XL with primes over an ENG rig, that goes without saying. 've used that rig before, It's actually pretty cool in my opinion. The Lens means a lot, plus it will help with the filmlook if thats what you're going for because you will have the DOF of a 35mm and the same field of view.

  12. Really appreciate that. Would Love to further my education but I'd never be able to fit it into my budget, Time an money wise. Although I do find myself very interested in Philosophy, and Meteorology. as odd as that sounds. Or I'd even study Business, the spark to learn is there for me, But barely making it and being completely independant of my parents makes it difficult for me. I'm just freaking out because I guess I'm finally free of highschool responsibilities and understand that I must build a life for myself career included, I just feel as if I dont want to waste time, at the expense of a furthered education.

    Really appreciate your responces,

  13. Here is some of that imagery in motion. For fill I had a simple C-stand with a white bounce card fairly close to the faces, as close as I could get it. Was bouncing the sunset into their faces.

copy and past those into your browser and watch if you are interested. Not the whole short, but its some of that scene in motion and you can kind of get a sence of whats going on

  14. This rental house route has been suggested before.

I'm not knocking it per se, but how many people have gone from the bottom floor of a rental house to DP?

Is the plan to ask the DPs that come in, "hey can hang out with you on set and learn?"

    R,

Yes I know there are plenty of film school grads selling insurance as well, no need to point that out ot me.

Fine, any DP's around here want to let me hang out and learn?

I just talked my buddy into letting me use his Aaton XTR cam package for free if I share some telecine time so I am going to start replacing the Minidv stuff with Super16.

But still, If anyone of you guys want a hardworking dedicated kid watching you and learning from you on set please let me know.

  15. Just graduated highschool, dont plan on filmschool, so what do I do now? I want more work, my resume as a First isnt bad, but I dont know where to take it, and who is going to take some highschool 18 yr old serious...and what I'd really like to be doing more of is DP work, but my reel consists of 16 short, and a buttload of minidv (most looks pretty good) but I just dont know how to fullfil my buddies advice "shoot on someone elses money and build your reel" if I'm in a smaller town north of LA with a reel full of minidv. someone please give me some insight, anything helps. what do I do?

    Thanks,
