  1. I was reading a forum on dvx user and I never quite understood how to do this, if anyone can remember an on the lot episode where one of the kids did theis effect where he stopped time, but two people could still move around. Now so far I know your saying that this is the wrong place for this forum but I don't think so.... The contestant who made the film had a computer with him the whole time, after one of the takes he put the footage onto the computer and opened up a program that appeared to be final cut pro, and within the program managed to get this effect and to make it possible, threw editing. Obviously from this description you can tell I'm a little confused, can anyone explain how this was done step by step, and how this is done with FCP?
  2. I'm looking for a how to guide on how to get really good at doing make up effects I've been to alot of sites and all involve just painting the faces white, putting some charcoal stuff around the eyes and some other little stupid things that end up with a result that is less than satisfactory. Recently I checked out a DvD feature On Zach Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead in which they showed them painting up these guys but didn't really go into any depth on how to do it, so what I am asking is just to learn how to do this for a hopeful future Zombie projectl
  3. I think I get what your saying, i've seen that movie a million times and it is scenes like that and always kinda wondered about that.Thankyou for the advice
  4. I thought I knew something about this, but I'm still kinda confused, I know the axis of motion obviosly as well as the 30 degree rule, switching shot size in each camera, exposing and lens adjustment same for every camera, but I keep reading things that touch on subjects I'm not familiar with, what are the more advanced or intermidiate parts of camera placement, any links or am I just over thinking this?
  5. I was reading a book about prcticle special effects, inside it had a short colum about shooting with minuatures. Now I know movies like The Posiden Adventure used minuateres to represent the ship, however I'm sure they had good artists and such to make it look like a ship. Anyways what I wanted to know was can I have a realistsic looking minuature on a small budget? And if so how do you light these things? Obviously on a big ship there is going to be lots of little patterns of light. Or is there a better method, compositing the shot always or trying to do this cg.
  6. Maybe a set light would help, or maybe angleing the soft boxes down a bit, maybe somehow outting some sort of half scrim on the bottom half of the soft box. If a window is above him and he is that colse to it the light probably wouldn't be hitting his feet, so therfor the half scrim idea, and a set light of a window shape hitting the floor behind him could work. Also if you raised the softboxes and angled them down, you could pull off the window gag.
  7. Thanks for clearing that up I'll definetly check out those books. I've never seen touch of evil but I get what your saying Michael. But I have one more question about the attention shifts between subjects, does this mean following the flow of dialoge? I've noticed in movies like Raging Bull there are seens like this. De Niro comes into the kitchen to confront his brother ( Joe Peci ) about signing him to a fight that he is too heavy to compete in They argue for a while then Peci explains thing CU Peci- Your too heavy so what MCU De Niro- So what? I'm Goanna loose 15 grand CU Peci- Good, right now no one wants to fight you right? MCU De Niro- Yea CUPeci- So Loose this then what? MCUDe Niro- Then What I loose !5 thousand CU Peci- Then they'll think your not as tuff and all those guys afraid to fight you will fight you CU Deniro That one shot, just the close up of Deniro, why would that be there, there is no dailoge from him, following that Peci breaks down his plan more, why not just stick with Pesci's dialoge, isn't that shot breaking this following attention shift between subjects? And this happens a million times in this movie, this is just one scene, De Niro doesn't even have any emotion or action in this shot so whay is it there?
  8. In Resevoir dogs (a movie which Sekula was Dop) the first scene after the credits are rolled is a car scene, where Harvy Keitel is driving a wounded Tim Roth to the safehouse. Now I was watching the movie with the commentary by Sekula on, he mentioned the Tarantino wanted the entire scene done with one shot of the camera panning back and forth from Roth to Keitel; Keitel to Roth. Sekula couldn't let this shot be done, the reason was that this would give away the presence of camera, he said that the audience would be thinking about the camera angle more than what was going on in the scene. He solved the problem by filming a few static angles from a different camera postion. This really confused me, in Children of Men they had a lot of shots that were done in one take and it seemed so real, like I was in the car with the actors, running away from soldiers, etc. So my question is what is this presence of camera rule? What are the exeptions i.e Children of Men wasn't breaking this rule because..... Any responce will help
  9. sorry, the article was in red on the list of film terms page i was looking at, I assumed it meant theat they didn't have a page for it.
  10. The only thing so far that I've come up with is some ads that talk about how to get rid and to reduce Dead spots. What is a dead spot exactly?
  11. oh yeah and Doug although I think toby might be right, where did you hear about rocket igniters? I'd like to see that, any clips or movies where they use that for this purpose or possibly another
  12. definatly, try searching either on google and you'll get significant differnances, the air moratrs usually have lots of compressed air, usually a machine attached, the air cannons can often be these one time use spfx things to shoot out confeeti, or blood and guts for head shots if you want.
  13. what are Contiguous spaces, Non-contiguous spaces and Analytical editing, and what are they, if anyone could offer a brief description and explination, the terms had no article on wikipedia so I came here for help. Thanks for anything.
  14. Sorry A. Whitehouse, I was looking for upcoming projects that will be on the big screen as well as previous, I didn't know that big screen directors did this, let alone made features out of this Tom said David Lynch does it too, I personally think It's cool that they are doing something outside the norm. What are the names of some of these features, are they any good, it would be helpful to check out how they look, to see them in coparison with what i have on my camcorder, cinematography wise.
  15. I can't remember where I heard it, but as far as I can remember the project was coming up, or at least announced. Unfortunatly he has two projects coming out so I don't know which one is the one shot on mini dv. Can anyone verify this, or at least find out what camera's the movie will be shot on, I'm curoius to see how it is done, does anyone else know of any projects of this kind elsewhere?
  16. I was watching this extra in the Band of Brothers dvd set which mentioned alot about how they did the effects, the most interesting was this giant fan looking thing that threw dirt in the sky when you pressed a button, they buried it in the ground to simulate mortar explosions. Is this something they made themselves, or something that you can purchase? Or is there a more practicle way to simulate the effect? Any advice will help.
  17. never mind about that last question I just checked out that link sent by Michael, anyways one of the cheaper alternatives mentioned was using a projector and taping the projected image with a mini dv camcorder, but does this defeat the purpose of using film is in the end all your doing is using the same standerd of mini dv? and also how would you go about capturing sound using this method?
  18. thanks everyone, sorry about my poor spelling "of final cut pro will this wirk," anyway how long does that transfer usually take, weeks or days? and is it optional on the medium such as film to dvd? ( Not talking about editing of coarse but rather just the raw footage )
  19. I have a mac with a fairly new version of final cut pro will this wirk, plus how much is super 8 film
  20. I have a few questions about super 8, and film as well, first can you re-record over film you shot like on a mini-dv or Vhs-c camcorder or do you have to keep buying film? Next can you take the film you shot on the camera re-wind it and put that on a computer some how? If so what device can do that next what is a good cheap and reliable super 8 camera and finally is e bay the right direction to go in if your looking to buy one?
  21. Thanyou, but how belivable does that extension have to be? Can it be just the besic, not even matching in paint would stain, etc or do I have to try to get as close as possible?
  22. This effect was recently done on a History channel show called the Univesre, in which they made a pool table look like it was going on forever, the image wasn't distored nor was the pool table, it just looked like it contiued on across the horizon. This sparked my interest, so I remembered that they had done this gag in the Big Lebowski as well, three or more times. The Three I can remember are The endless shoe rack that streched to the moon, the Endless Staircase, and an endless bowling lane. Has anyone got any ideas how to do the effect?
  23. That is weird that Scorsese is doing a documentry. It makes sense that he is doing it on the Rolling Stones sinse they're music is in almost all of his movies. Why so many Cinematographers? All of them are excellent, is that a common thing when shooting concerts or is each one doing a seperate show, does anyody know about that?
  24. 300 did a nice job using backlight in the movie where all the bodies are stuck to the tree ( I know probably not a great example for what movie your doing ) anyway it was a really cool shot. recomendation for further mysticism shoot it at magic hour, if you can work that in the script.
