Thank Freya, and Edgar dont worry too much. Who knows it might be a blessing in disguise ;-)
-
How do you know this?
Did you get e-mail? I haven't received anything yet.
Hi Edgar, it was a letter - so heres hoping for you! R
-
So...
Anyone has any interview offers?
Anyone has any replys?
Hi Edgar, I was not selected for an interview. I am not that disappointed, I will make films either way. It would have been nice but, I am going to concentrate on making the best short films I can, with the money I would have invested in that course.
I take my cue from such British directors like Shane Meadows, Christopher Nolan, who have trodden down their own path to get to where they are.
I will do the same. If you got your interview congratulations, and for those of us who did not, chin up you'll be a more resilient filmmaker for the setback and in the words of Frederich Neitzche;
"That which does not kill us makes us stronger."
Good old Frederich.

Well if interviews are being held around the 25th June my chances have just lucked themselves out. Hopefully some comrades on this thread will have more of a chance. As for me, I am going to ride off into the sunset with head held firmly high! ;-)
-
Invitations for interviews aren't going out until some time next week and interviews are being held the week starting 25th June. So theres still hope!
Hi thanks Prokopi, How did you hear about that from your friend applying? btw are interviews held first and then the shortlisted people get to do the workshop later? Thanks,
-
btw do all cinematography students who get shortlisted have to attend the 3 day work shop? i wish you all the best luck anyhow..
-
I haven't heard back yet. I have a friend who applied for producing and its the same for him. I want to remain optimisitic but as more time goes by I feel the chances are getting slim of getting an interview.
Well whatever happens, happens.
Chin up and all that,
it would just be nice to know sooner rather than later, i can then plan accordingly......

Short funded by screen south = in india

I know! Heck, for $200k I'll shoot 3 features, on film! (already have the scripts to boot)
Surely its about using what you've got and making it the best you can, $200K is alot of bucks to me, i am sure its alot of bucks for anyone, my budget = shoe string. ! the day i get that kind of budget i would be a happy chap
-
and offered you $200,000 to do your feature,
200 K? Where do i sign....
-
Has anyone heard back for interviews? I suppose they contact people quite quickly regarding places on the cinematography course........

Thanks for that, I shouldnt let things get to me too much. I always let things get to me, I cant help it but I need to find a strong skin from somewhere fast. -thing is I was thinking, perhaps you need the gift of the gab to be some big time director or rather a particular kind of director. I believe everyone can direct a film, but alot of those films - from people who perhaps think they couldnt take the helm would end up with unconventional films. I suppose what I am trying to say is that in the interview it made me question my leadership skills. But i have hope that in certain situations lots of people can display those characteristics, including me. its what people DO that matters I suppose and not what they speak -

So I am looking for temping work, telesales, yeah that sounds like a good idea. Worst interview I have honestly ever had. Apparently I lack motivation, passion etc etc. How can you get passionate about selling internet packages to unsuspecting innocent people. Am I missing something here? Should people actually get excited over prospects like this? What is going on. I feel terrible after that interview, it really irks me when someone says, "wheres your passion?" But the interviewer has only just met me.
How can they pass judgment so quick like that. So I am a bit quiet and don't jump around much. So? That doesn't make people less passionate about things. What am I doing going for interviews like this. I feel dejected.
"Well i hope youre more passionate when you go try interviews for jobs in the media," What? How can you say that? You're basing a character assessment on a 10 minute meeting? i dont know.... :(

That sounds like a one light transfer to me.
They're not correcting every shot, so in some things may look "Wierd," also film overall isn't very punchy, I would say, with it's colors, but very soft and subtle, with a lot of information; low contrast, ya know? Later on in your own color timing is when you'd punch up the saturation/crush blacks/blow whites/ etc. . .to get the slicker looks oft associated with film these days.
Of course, this is all speculation on how I'm picturing what you're describing. Got any framegrabs of it?
What i will do is get some and some india stills and compare........=

What service did Soho Images provide: One Light/Best Light/Supervised.
What instructions (if any) did your friend give regarding "look"?
Those details may explain why the footage didn't look how you may have expected. In what way were you unimpressed. Were the images soft, grainy, colour balance off, contrast too flat/too high??
Likewise with the Indian lab?
Personally I've only used Todd-AO, but been happy with their service, and content with their price.
Maybe it was a combination of the lighting and what not but the image appeared to me quite grainy and flat. He was using 500 t so that probably explains that, I dont know - the picture just appeared quite flat like a high end VHS tape if there is such a thing. The colours werent saturated and the contrast was strange in places, but there was an overall feel that it wasnt a top draw tk
it was a one light transfer, we/he couldnt really afford a supervised. :( i am telling him to shoot 7201 next time, in lovely sunlight.

A friend of mine had some telecine done at Soho images in London recently and I was rather unimpressed. Do these companies fob struggling filmmakers off with lesser results?/ I had some stuff telecined (is that TK'd for short?) over in india and the quality was stupendous compared to the london footage.
it doesnt really make sense?/ i might ship my telecine stuff (and his) over stateside or back to india from now on as the service seems a; alot cheaper and b; higher quality.

I think you sound too cynical B) .
Such patronage efforts have existed throughout filmmaking history, they just take new guises and shapes in their period.
What I can make out here is just a rather liberal, generous and public-facing and publicity-wrapped film competition, which fits into the Virgin Groups brand image and corporate history. Richard Branson - even though he might not have been involved with this project at all - also a very nice guy and absolutely trustworthy.
Would you rather have no Virgin effort, and just a state committee of grey old functionaries noding off or throwing out film scripts to be made "in the public interest" as was the case in the 1950s? I doubt most films made by forum members would have passed that hurdle.
Gosh, sometimes, I think people who where born and bread in the UK get overaffected by their inclination to descend in cynical self-pity about their living conditions and social/societal environs. Yeah, alot of stuff sucks here on this island and I wonder how Brits got in that mess (I guess it involved previously living Brits...), but even though I have the choice to go to many other countries for a living due to my background, I choose to stay here because it's a more liberal place than many seem to appreciate.
Yes, perhaps I was being too cynical, its just strange that when things like this come along. I dont know of any other competition with the same "potential," in the prize it is offering. Perhaps I should shut my big mouth and enter something instead of berating it!
-
Well I saw this recently and thought, is this a worthwhile venture sending my hard worked short to be claimed by a big company. Basically its a competition for 2.5 minutes shorts to be loaded up to their website, judged etc and then printed to 35mm to be shown all over UK cinemas as well as others mediums. Then the final 12 get the chance to win £30k ($60k!) towards another short. It does seem like a good opportunity but I have a reservation about how they could use the short films easily out of context.....? I would like to come at it from a different angle of cynicism, but I dont know, its hard enough making short films in the Uk without carrots being dangled in your face and then to be made a public dancing bear for the money thrown from the table of the UKFC.
Or is this the opportunity we have been waiting for? I suppose its what you make of it...
Anyway it would be nice to know peoples opinions and if anybody has entered.
-
and make a million bucks?
Looks like you need an economics/law school rather than a film school! I dont think film school is in anyway shape or form a fast track to a million bucks, thats all about initiative and luck i suppose
-
Any ideas?/ I assume that all Ebms make this kind of noise.......well i hope anyway a alittle bit different to the clockwork ones......
-
Do people think that 5 minutes is enough material for them to make a decision?
-
Ralph,
I think that you are kidding yourself if you really believe in what you said. Maybe not at this stage but if you persevere and continue to push yourself then there is no reason why you can't earn a living out of what you do.
I should say that if someone offers me money to ever do this gig, I would of course without a doubt take it, as everybody would, but I am not really at this stage doing it for some ridiculously paid pie in the sky dream..
i think that make sense...?
argh curse the keyboard i am too tired to get across my intonation!
-
Why anyone would want to go to a film school in a country where filmmaking is at best a fringe artform I have no idea.
Well at the moment Phil I am doing it for the love of doing it - I am not kidding myself into thinking that I am going to earn a living out of it.
-
I am thinking of applying - I have about a 5 minute showreel of stuff i have, but it could be more - but 5 mins of stuff i am happy with. Do you think that this is Okay? And why is the fee so pricey, £50/$100 is a little steep.
Is the NFTS quite free or regimented? If anybody has been it would be great to hear opinions
