  1. Wow, nice! How did he build the cage parts??? I want those!
  2. I wouldn't suggest using canned air on glass worth much of anything. Depending on the angle your spray it and other factors it can present problems. Use a lens blower.
  3. As we all know, a problem with pulling focus on SLR lenses is the short barrel throw. It makes focusing very difficult when you go from 5ft to 7ft in a fraction of an inch. I've noticed that some SLR lesnes are better than others at providing a large enough barrel throw. What can I look for that will help me find lenses with a decent barrel throw? I don't have the money for cine lenses of course. If anyone has any lenses they've found works especially well for pulling focus, I'd appreciate it if you could mention the model and/or provide a link.
  4. How do I go about evaluating what BNC cable to purchase for hooking up my DV camera to an SD CRT production monitor? Those security camera BNC cables are quite cheap, would I lose much? Looking for like 25' or 50' lengths.
  5. For the inner baffle it would only cost me like $45 to replace.
  6. So I picked up a big white fabric shower curtain in hopes of using it as a big silk. Unfortunately I'm getting both a hard shadow and a softer wrap around light. I'm punching a single 1k Arri lite through it. Is there any way around this besides putting a hunk of heavy diff on the light?
  7. Looking for an economical high output fixture/setup that will give me ambient light on a set. The Arrilite 2k is more than I'd like to spend. Any ideas? I was thinking about using a bunch of work lights rigged together through a silk or something, but also considering florescencts due to their efficiency.
  8. I tried running a 1.2kw Arri fresnel HMI out of a residential bathroom which had a GFI and it tripped pretty quickly. There was nothing else on the 15A circuit.
  9. So i had a 1k arri lite w/chimmera rigged from some rafters and a hot scrim fell onto the inner diffusion layer of my 24x32 chimera when one of my grips/electrics was adjusting it. So I have 2 holes melted in the middle of one of my chimera diffusion layers. The holes are small enough to be patched by some diffusion from a swatchbook, but I'm not sure how to go about attaching some silk to the diffusion layer without melting glue or possibly burning thread (which might cast shadows as well). Any ideas? Is there a better way of going about this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
  10. I've done a fair amount of lighting for film/tv mainly as a gaffer but I've gotten a few requests for doing some stage and/or theater lighting. Where would be a good starting point for someone with experience in film/tv lighting to start learning about stage lighting? (meaning before I actually get on a gig)
  11. Any ideas where I can get good affordable bulbs for Arri tungsten fresnels? (fresnels: 150, 300, 650; and Arrilite open face 1k) I've previously purchased from bulbconnection.com for bulbs for a lowel kit I used to use, are there any other places that might be better? Also, is there anything I should consider when picking one manufacturer over another for a bulb? IE: Osram, GE, and USHIO all make the DXW lamp. http://www.bulbconnection.com/ViewSearch.c...t_search=Submit
  12. How does the scene illumination feature work? Does it have the photometrics built in for lots of common fixtures or..?
  13. As far as I know you just have to clip gels to the end of the softbox.
  14. Why do you find it not so good for ACing? If anyone has any pics of the interior of any of the following pouches it'd be great to see! Setwear Mini AC Pouch Setwear Jumbo AC Pouch Setwear tool pouch Cinebag CB-03 AC pouch Any of the filmtools/Lindcraft tool pouches
  15. So I'm looking to upgrade from my home depot tool pouch, mainly because it doesn't close and I've gotten caught on things a few times because of tools sticking out. I do more of grip/electric & gaffing work but also AC sometimes. I've had my eye on the Set wear Tool Pouch or the Set Wear Small AC Pouch. Also considering the Cinebags CB-03. What do you use?
  16. I think the plug/outlet you're talking about uses 220-240v wheas your edison plug will require 110-125v (assuming you're in the USA). You'd probably need to change the plug on your light itself assuming the cord and fixture can handle that voltage.
  17. I'm looking to buy some stingers for my tungsten light kit (biggest head = 1000w). I can get 14 gauge or 12 gauge, both are rated for a max current of 15A. Besides being heavier and more durable, are there any benefits or drawbacks to going with 12 gauge 15A? 14 gauge (50ft) : $20 12 gauge (50ft) : $25
  18. I have some cheap cube taps I picked up for about $1/each at the hardware store. The contacts on them are really flimsy and the grounding pin on one of them fell out the other day. I've noticed on some products like Arri plugs and on a ground tester I have, the metal contacts are much more sturdy, I can barely bend them w/my hand. Where can I find heavier duty cube taps? Btw, why isn't there a category on here for electrical stuff? Grips got their own, what about electrics?
  19. I'm looking to purchase a new ditty bag for all my tools and stuff I bring for doing G&E work on set. I often find myself traveling or walking with this bag on some shoots so I thought it might be handy (and easier on my arm) to have a backpack tool bag instead, but I've been having a hard time finding an appropriate one. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone that has products to suggest.
  20. I'm looking to purchase a used Arri Softbank IV 5 light kit. Will also consider buying individual heads/accessories (or similar ones ie: tweenie vs 650w arri) instead at the right price. Also looking for some LTM Peppers (300w preferred). PM me or e-mail me at salil@salsunproductions.com if you have anything like this for sale. I'm located just outside of Chicago, IL.
  21. Would I lose much by going with a 3" grip head like this: http://www.dmkfoto.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=630 Instead of the standard 2.5" that has multiple holes on one side and a 5/8" hole on the other? I've been using the Impact Grip heads on my light stands (not c-stands) from B&H, which I like a lot but looking for grip arms, this deal at DMK seems really good but the head looks a little different. Any suggestions? B&H Impact grip head: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3719..._Head_2_5_.html
  22. Thanks, is there any particular alloy or grade or w/e of aluminum tubing you recommend?
