  1. I forgot, i know a DP who has the MYT slider. He has the wooden handles for it and it looks very steampunk and clients/talent often commented on it looking cool, so thats the way to go to pique a wanky hipster DPs interest..

Three grand is ridiculously expensive for 2 bits of metal and some skateboard wheels. Surely a gripshop will custom make you one cheaper than that?

I cant remember if you have one, but the most profitable camera gear you can get is a wally dolly. Small shows are forever hiring them but few one man band vans have them. I think youd use that a lot more than a slider.

  2. When would you need small daylight off a puttputt? A night shoot in the woods? 400w led wont do anything useful outside.

And youd only run a 1.2 off a 3kva honda, so you could only really run the 2 leds off it total, which is not much. And thats without Guy Holt spending an hour cutting and pasting harmonics info for you.

Maybe im wrong but id rarely do jobs where a small gennie is used. And i certainly wouldnt base my kit around it. Id base it around talking heads in a studio and lighting a bedroom.

The lens size is somewhat pointless as the leds would be too large and would go direct, not through a reflector.

  3. Yeah the fresnels uv treated not the bulb. A par should have a safety screen and a safety switch. And the lenses are uv treated as well.

Its pissweak usually, the reflectors not as good as a par. A par with no lens is a poormans mole beam. A fresnel without a lens is a disapointment.

The fresnel gives much higher output.

You could try a "condenser" like a sunray par has instead of barn doors. Like a snoot but it goes a little wider and is reflective, so some of the flooding light you lose at the lens is condensed into reflective beam.

But basically, always get a bigger lamp and cut back

You could go crazy and retrofit like a babymax relector into an hmi and get a safety screen, but just get a bigger lamp.

Or do a bit of "fla spot" and walk the whole deal in.

Or get a spottier/more reflective bounce.

I should stop pontificating. It makes me feel important.

  4. A 1.2 par is the most profitable light you can buy for a van.

The only advantage of the led is battery power (which i assume a "400w" version wont do), digital dimmer 0-100% and two for the price of one.

"400w" is a weird middle ground, your most useful housepower kit is 2x2.5, 2x1,2, 575, 200.

If youve already got 1x1.2 par, get the 2 leds. Wank factor is high which sadly means that itll impress DPs more than a proper film light.

You should make a mount so the two leds can mount together on a cockies perch or something.

Also unless you see it, any manufacturers ratings or information is LIES.

Enjoy updating the gearlist, its the best part of the job.

  5. Anyone know where i can find a adaptor that does 240v wall plug (3 pin australian) or iec lead to 4 pin xlr?

I have a 12v kino kit and some other stuff that runs off 4 pin xlr. I have a toshiba power adaptor that came with a cheap chinese led panel but im looking for about 4 more adaptors.

I cant find anything under us$150 or so on google. Surely theres something around us$30-$40.

Anyone know an adaptor thats used for camera or something else that i can buy cheaply online?

    Thanks!
