  1. Arrright...thanks Adrian, Regan and David......i really appreciate.....i guess i have got something about color temperature now. So can we say that color temperature determines the color?
  2. As a student we usually work with tungston lights, mostly 500 watt and 1000 watt. I understand the light color they produce. I want to know how can i achieve the white color with these lights. Should i apply some kind of jell on them? What i normally do is put a butter paper on it, which makes it somehow whitish yellow, and reduces the light intensity as well. What things should i keep in mind to produce white light?
  3. As you know, i am a student learning cinematography, i have to ask such basic questions. I've read about color temperature, but i want to know about the practical definition. Is color temperature depends on the source or the bulb inside? suppose we have one source, and on the other hand we have multiple units of the same light. Does color temperature remain the same, or it will be higher with multiple sources?
  4. Did some research on internet and found the answer.... Its the mount size that varies in cameras. Sony DSR250 has the 58mm filter mount, so sony has its own filters made for 58mm thread. On the other hand cannon XL series has different mounts, i guess its 72mm and it has its own filters. So thats it.... I think ND and Polarizers are must for any dp, what you say?
  5. ok....got it Do these filter cost much? Can we use the same filter on any video camera? or Are there seperate filters(mounts) for say Sony 250 and cannon xl 1?
  6. Arrrrrright..... Does these filter work well with the video cameras(i normally use Sony DSR 250p and Cannon XL1), I mean can we mount the filters on video cameras?
  7. hmmmm.........that might be the pretty much function. And what effect does it do. What i felt is that they do nothing just decrease the amount of light entring in. Is this the only function of the ND? What is the filter that clears the dust and fog in the environment and make the image look good and colorful. The reason i am asking is because i am here in Lahore, Pakistan and environment here is dusty all the time, but still i have seen videos of Lahore which are extremely clear and colorful with no dust. What do they do? Do they use any filter or something?
  8. well......yah i guess its a digital function in the camera, which digitally calculates, no idea what formula or anything. Do they perform the same function i mean like physically mount filters on still camera?
  9. Most DV cameras have the built in ND filters in camera, ND1 and ND2 mostly. Do they have the same affect as of other filters that are physically mounted?
  10. Adrian, what you mean by 80? What is it? Well....let me ask you one thing. Do i have to lift up the blacks so they look contrasty? I mean increase the black level? I think the problem is in the mids, lifting up the mids would work fine as apposed to lifting the whole image.
  11. That shot with the window is just to let you know what/where the source of light is? It is taken by a handycam that a friend was holding, nothing else. It will not be used. Exteriors......Suggest me something on exteriors, coz i need to take some long shots and couple of timelaps.
  12. That third shot is just to let you know what/where the source of light is? It is taken by a handycam that a friend was holding, nothing else. Still i am not cleared about the lighting? Should i enhance the available light in order to look it good on screen?
  13. Can a DSLR camera work as a light meter? If i use the settings of the my DSLR camera in my sony 250p camera, i mean the shutter speed as you said 1/48 or 1/60 th of a second, it will suggest me the aperture for a properly lit image (but that can be viewed only in a small LCD ). Is this a fine approach? How can my DSLR camera help me setting the appropriate settings?
  14. I am a student and i have always problems coming in. So here i go again: I understand about the shutter speed. Mainly i have worked in still cameras and i understand what they do in still cameras. But how shutter speed works in video (I mainly work on Sony 250 P). How shutter speed works with frame rate fps? Some one please explain this a bit.
  15. Yah...i got you...........well....how could i throw a kicker in the INT shots? Becaus you can see the main source is the window, which is quite big. So that big source has lit the right side (camera right) of the face quite evenly. So where could i throw a kicker. In your examples i can see a kicker, which justifies coz the room is lit evenly. yes i could have moved the talent away from the wall provided the room is bigger. And what you mean by crushing the black? I understand video does not print the blacks properly. So what steps should i follow in post? Should i lower the contrast and increase the saturation? I mainly use Adobe Premiere.
  16. hmm....got you.....but explain this a bit. suppose you go into a situation and light seems to be fine with naked eye. But would you light it anywayz in order to look it good on screen? light it or enhance the image by any other means or whatever. is this the approach?
  17. Adrian! how do you use your DSLR for the references? I mainly concerned about the shutter speed. How you match the shutter speed of the DSLR with that of the motion picture camera? And what if you are using digital dv cams? what is the relation b/w shutter speed of DSLR and the frame rate fps?
  18. Well....yah there was no fill in the indoor shots. so yes using a reflector could work. the outdoor shots are pretty bright, mainly because of light at that time of the day. What you say?
  19. Here are the couple of frame grabs of the shoot that i had last week. These are raw footage grabs with no color correction or any thing. I would want to hear from you guys on these frames. I am disappointed by the output mainly because of the exposure, light was so much at that time of the day. Please tell me what mistakes you find in these images and what should have i done. Shot with Sony DSR 250p on mini Dv. Shot indoor with natural light coming from the side through a window in a 12x10 ft. room. This is the shot from the other side(see the window) This is one of the frame from the timelaps sequence. Shot for almost 5 min. another one shot outdoor in shiny day at around 12'o clock noon Performance happening in the shades of the shrine (see the under-exposure in wide) Do we have to light up always. I mean suppose we see at something with eye and see that is ok, even then would i light up in order to look good when it is recorded. Increase the exposure or throw a light or whatever. Should i apply an ND filter and open my iris????
  20. well.....i am not worried about crossing the line i have a verity of shots, and i guess i will check in the edit. i will try to work something in post, contrast and brightness and levels i guess would help.
