  1. The dumb and smart side notions are kool. Well, i agree that this all depends on whats available in the room. It usually happens with me that i place the camera and talent first(roughly and tweak a little bit afterwards) and then set the light. Is that a fine approach. Well, for a fiction or drama or something like that one can think of using the available light source or use the side which is motivated, whatever side it is dumb or smart, which i think is more dramatic and appropriate. But for interview stuff i guess putting the key on the dumb side is better, as shadows will be fall on the other side which is off camera and will not look bad on the image.
  2. to tell you the truth.............i couldn't understand what you said. I'll be grateful if you explain a bit
  3. Though sounds childish, but being a student i have to ask this: While you are on a CS or a CU, which side of the face would you put the key light, or would try to create? Would you put the key on the side where you've given the nose/looking room or on the opposite side? I know that depends on the situation or the setting but what i want to know is one's personal choice? Hope you've got what i am trying to say.
  4. Thank you Mark and Steve.............that is extremely information for a bigginer like me. Sure i will take care of these things. One thing more that i want to know. I shot this shrine which almost 4 hours drive away from my place, and we shot all day. We reached there at around 12:00 pm, which is worst time to shoot, but we had to because we couldn't afford to stay. Should i always plan my shoot before that sunny time; i mean after 3 pm or before 11 am; which are times when light is not that even and falls from an angle. So should i wait and plan my shoot before these hours?
  5. I was shooting the documentry, and it was decided to shoot all natural. There were comments from people, shooting buildings, shrines. I was using Sony DSR 450p, and a big part was shot hand held. I had problems during the shoot, as there were lot of people, a rush situation. I was shooting the comments of a singer and i was constantly pushed by the people around. I want suggestions shooting in such conditions. I set the camera to auto mode, and shot almost on auto. ON couple of interviews i made the manual settings by setting the white balance and other settings, but what should i do when worst conditions are there? Should i shoot on Auto? What should i bring with me during the shoots? I was shooting on a sunny day and at time which is concidered wrong for shooting. Another thing, i was shooting 2, 3 minute interviews standing, i had my camera on shoulder, and i was very much tired, actually i was on a ockward position, and i took a heavy breath as soon as i stopped recording. Are there any exercies or positions while shooting handheld, or shoulder?
  6. yah, tried the presets, and then i white Balanced manually on option A, and when i looked at both the shots, there was quite a difference in colors. Which option is best? Using Presets or doing white balance manually?
  7. arrrrright.......now i got it, that was pretty simple but very informational. Thanks a lot bro
  8. I was using this Sony DSR 250 p for a college assignment. It has three options for white balancing. A, B and Preset(Preset has 3200k and 5200k options, that i understand). What i really want to clear myself is what is the difference if i set the White Balanace to A, and then white Balance, and what will happen if i White Balance while choosing B. I hope guyz understand what i am looking for.
  9. well.............. any AC reading this post would be careful now anywayz.......where should i start taking pictures? What should i shoot with my still camera? Techniques that would help me working with motion pictures cameras?
  10. I am looking for one year course in cinematography. Well actually i am doing my masters degree but i want to do a hands on practical course which will lead me to work here. So what you people suggest me, which school should i look for?
  11. I am studying currently in film/video production. I have always been working on digital dv cameras for my class assignments and term projects. Though i've been into couple of big projects where i was in the team but never actually worked myslef on the film cameras? How can i switch to film? What should i study? I just got a manual SLR camera. I will start doing the photography with film negative. Where should i start first? what should i practice? Suggest me please
  12. arrrrright.......... how can we creat steady-cam like effect(if we dont have the steady-cam) while doing handheld?
  13. How do you control the jerk while doing hand held operation? Whenever i do handheld there is a lot of jerk which i am not been able to control? I guess i have a problem, my hands shiver always, i mean in normal. How one can control the jerk? Are there specific exercies or positions or techniques while doing handheld?
  14. What is Rim light? Can anyone explain it. If possible please put any reference images. Also explain what exactly the "wrap" is?
  15. arrrright.....yah atleast pd-170 doesnt have the readings marked on the lens barrel.
  16. When doing a rack focus(or in a differntial shot), changing focus from one foreground object to the other background object(or vice versa), shifting the focus causes the lens to zoom in or out slightly, thats the breathing. Correct me if i m wrong.
  17. Arrright i got some of it now.... well....tell me should it be a good practice to measure the distance and then set the focus according to that??? As we here in our school normally do it without measuring the distance and focus by eye watching in the eye-piece. I normally use DSR-450 or Cannon XL 1. Should i make it a practice to set focus by measuring the distance? Does this work with dv cams(as they have the zoom lens mostly)??? Or it works only with fixed/prime lenses.
  18. I understand F Stop or F number...........but what is this T stop? what is the difference between these? Can any one explain this. i'll be grateful
  19. arrrrright.........seems an easy task.... simpley take the distance and set the focus ring according to that. Is that it???
  20. Thats quite information for a student like me who have always this question in mind. I have never used prime lenses(we are given cannon XL 1, and DSR 450p for our class projects), always used zoom lenses. well......isn't there any possibility in Prime Lenses, where we can move a bit just to adjust the frame. If Primes are fixed means we cant compose a frame according to our own? Taking a closeup on 70mm prime, we will not be able to adjust the frame? I hope you got what i mean.
  21. I am a student, studying here in an arts school with majors in video making. Well......its seems quite a non-sence question but being a student i have to ask this. I have seen on a lot of shoots that people take a measurment of the distance from the lens to the object. Why do they measure that distance. Is it about the focus? Means, for a specific distance measured, the lens would be on that specific stop. Kindly explain in detail. I'll be grateful Saj
  22. Awsome.....Algis! i really liked the shots of temples and other buildings....great what did you shoot in Pakistan?
