  1. If you are shooting 16mm, stay away from 500asa stocks as the grain will be tough to match on top of everything else the SLR's do poorly.

     

    You can always rate it at 320ASA to cut down on the grain. Or shoot Vision3 7219. The grain is very minimal in the new Kodak line. OR add some grain to the digital images ala MagicBullet. I've seen some very convincing stuff done with that.

     

    If I were shooting it I'd try to go all one format. Be it film or digital. That way you know for sure that it is going to match. Unless you don't want it to match.

  2. I'd say if it is comfortable, safe and not dayglo colors you will be fine. I would've definitely worn shorts(and have) on farm shoots. It's 2010, shorts are not outrageous, I think it's ridiculous. You aren't like them, i.e. you're not a farmer. Would you wear a three-piece suit if you were on a commercial for a lawyer?

     

    But next time you're on the farm maybe you should go with cutoffs. :P

     

    Is it possible the cameraman(DP?, OP?) was just messing with you?

  3. I've used the Pcam app and despite putting the info in correct and pull was soft because I didn't pull to that actual distances and just tried to keep it within the DoF the Pcam told me.

     

    What's really interesting is that I've compared different DoF calculator apps, Pcam, Kodak, Pocket DIT, ISee4K. put in the same information in all of them and they each gave me different results. I've since decided to just be 'on' and just use it as a reference and not a crutch.

  4. As my dad said to me, years ago, on my first paid gig, and as has been mentioned on here, "Dummy the f*** up." And don't forget, showing up on time is really showing up 15 minutes late, showing up 15 minutes early is being on time. Nothing irks me more than people who are late.

  5. As I mentioned elsewhere, a better/additional application would be for the Script Supervisor, the Second AC, and the Sound Mixer to all have iPads. The Script Supervisor would input the proper scene information and it would automatically send it to the other two iPads on set. No more wondering what the scene number is! The Second AC's iPad-like device would have to be built to be rugged and with wooden sticks on top for normal slating while the display contained the information that was being shared b/n the three departments.

     

    The Loader could then sync his device with the on-set iPad-like slate and generate camera reports to attach to mags or harddrives. At the end of the night, the software would have generated a final camera report which could be printed out on the truck and distributed as normal or emailed to the ADs.

     

    The possibilities are there. The question is, is it worth the trouble?

  6. Here's my 2 cents.

     

    Around every 4000' shot, I would send to your lab(I recommend Deluxe in LA, cheap(.08 per foot) and great) and then to your telecine lab and get an HD telecine(i really liked Cinelicious(and they have a Diamond Clear HD(uprez) that's pretty cheap) have them transfer it via hard drive and they'll ship it back to you. This way you will have some of your film processed and telecine'd completely, before the shoot is over and be able to see if everything is working.

  7. Did you flash already exposed film or unexposed raw film? If it was exposed, it depends how much light and how long you had the door open. I flashed an exposed roll once in the dark room on the truck(immediately told all that needed to be told) for about a second. It was fine, no problem whatsoever.

    same here, can't bring myself to finish reading. It's one thing to talk about HD cameras and tests but another to come out and attack film. This guy is an butt. Anyone care to give the Cliff notes?

  9. when you start a message board about your product aren't you inviting all praise AND questions about your product/company and everything that has to do with either? Isn't to your advantage to be honest with the people who purchase and/or use your product?

  10. Bryan, yes they are talking about that. You could have clicked the link and watched for 60 seconds and had the answer to your question.

     

     

    I think it would be almost impossible to do completely unbiased tests. I will say that I prefer film and want it to continue forever(yes I know how this sounds). And as Zacuto's products are specifically for a broad range of digital cameras they do seem to have a bias because if they declare Canon 5Dmk2, for example, they could possibly profit off of that. But one of the things they do keep saying is that film is the gold standard. They also say that invited reps from all of the companies involved(kodak, fuji, canon, nikon,etc.)and only Fuji and Canon showed up.

     

    A question I have is they say they were using all Zeiss glass. But is there a big difference in Zeiss cinema lenses and Zeiss still lenses? Would that skew some of the test results?
