  2. To Peter Enright: If you read further in the section on slating procedures you would see that I explain that on many productions the sound mixer does a "pre-slate" recording of the scene and take number, which is why the 2nd AC on needs to call "marker" when clapping the sticks. 10. I worked as both a 2nd and 1st in LA for many years on over 150 different productions and here is my opinion. If you are marking actors use 1/2" or 1" paper tape (you may call it spike tape if you wish). The adhesive on the back is not as strong as camera or gaffer tape and this is important when filming in private homes. You don't want to remove the tape only to bring the homeowners floor finish up with it. 1" cloth tape is called Camera Tape. 2" cloth tape is called Gaffer Tape.
  11. Check out my book, "The Camera Assistant's Manual" published by Focal Press. It has complete descriptions of the job responsibilities of both the first and second assistants. David E. Elkins
  12. I am the author of The Camera Assistant's Manual. The fourth edition will be out in late January 2005. My book is designed for those people that have little or no experience and want to learn how to do the job. Doug Hart's book is geared toward those assistant's that have been working for a while. Hope this helps.
