  1. As I've said a thousand times, it's a matter of degree. Call me a left-wing socialist stalin-banger, but I think there does come a point where wealth becomes so extreme that it is inherently abusive.

    P

    f

Plenty of people do the lottery every week, all in search of abusive wealth, so it can't be so evil

  2. Where is your evidence that I have exploited anyone?

The money raised by a few people shooting footage on spec to sell sadly does not raise gigantic sums of money. Not enough to count as profit, money not generated by our own work.

I am very glad you want to be a socialist, but sadly social relations are to a large extent decided by the society you live in. You can't be a serf in a slave society, or a socialist when all the relations are based on people being employed to make a profit out of them.

The best we can do is cooperative models of production, where film makers together make films and share the ownership.

The concentration of wealth and power now is so extreme that most small businesses are struggling to survive and the owners exploit themselves. In fact this is used by corporations who farm out whole sections of production who know that they will exploit themselves and others far better than themselves.

Take Les MIs, a big studio Universal commissions Working Title to produce the film on a smaller budget than they would use. They bare the brunt of the production problems.

Where is the evidence George Lucas or Richard Boddington exploited anyone ? It'more sour grapes you have been less successful than Richard. Problem with time lapse stock footage is anyone can do it with a DSLR or even a iPhone. Unless you really push the boundaries as Tom Lowe has, your not really providing anything that essential in today's market..

I have to survive in this capitalist society as best I can, and with my understanding of capitalism I kept the copyright of a lot of the film material I shot. All of the people who worked on the making the footage received the full rewards for making it.

    .

So your business model is identical to Richards & every other producer. Perhaps they are all communists just trying to survive :D

The rich should be given one days work down a coal mine, one day as a nurse, one as a teacher, one flipping burgers and then given the choice - they can keep their money but have to do one of those jobs. OR continue making films on a average wage.

Well in the UK the poor are not compelled to work, there are families where nobody has worked for 2 generations, soon to be 3 generations.

If the poor don't have to be given 1 days work in a coal mine why should the rich have to?

The great thing about a free market is than anybody can be a producer, which RB has shown, so where is the problem? It's just incompetent people complaining that someone less competent than themselves earned more money , it's not fair LOL.

  5. Just to make it clear that this is a change of subject, you haven't addressed my concerns over the equitability of very wealthy people profiting, at zero effective risk, from the risk

    P

Phil, people become rich by continuely spending less than they earn, ie living within their means. Over time they may become very wealthy if they invest wisely, however they are always at risk of being blown out in a capatilist system.

    Hey guys,

I'm planning out some fairly extensive additions to my lighting kit and I'd be keen to hear people's thoughts on the Dedolight 650w units if anyone's used them?

I love, and I mean LOVE, the little 150w Dedos. They'll undoubtably be a part of my new kit. But I'm interested to hear how the 650w units compare to a more traditional 650w Fresnel, particularly in terms of spill control and light output (i.e. are the 650w units just the same as the 150w units with 4x the output?).

I'm spending extra to build a lighting kit filled with fixtures that are as controllable as possible in order to allow me to set-up, pack-down and light faster. So if the 650w Dedos can save me from having to rig up an extra flag here and there (compared to a fresnel), then that's what I'd want to get.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Mark

The Dedo 650's are way brighter than a normal 650, also have a far greater zoom on the beam. Really nice lights to use, you should try before you buy like any equipment.

  7. Hi!

I'm adapting some old lenses (mainly oct-18) to the PL mount, and some of them have quite long rear part...

Is there somewhere exact dimensional drawings or information, how much the rear part of the lenses can protrude inside the PL mount

in certain camera models before it touches the internal filters or other parts, eg. how much there is free space inside the mount?

The manuals seem to have only the image plane marked, not where the filters actually are...

    Main cameras of interest are:

    Red Epic

    Red One

    Arri Alexa

    Arri Alexa Studio

    Sony F3

    Sony F5 & 55

thank you very much for answering

If they worked with a spinning mirror reflex camera they will work wilt all the above. The optimo DP range won't work on film cameras but will work with the above except possibly the Alexa Studio, however there will be a problem with the new Red Motion Mount.

  8. Let me ask you all this, if this is a sound plan:

Going off of Bernie O'Doherty's advice, using a bit of semi-transparent material over the gate, I first ensure back focus is achieved through the gate. Then I check the prism alignment and fix if need be.

I mean, if it's sharp looking through the gate, and then sharp through the viewfinder, and my measurement markings are correct...I should be set as far as focus is concerned, am I right?

Up to a point, better to check when the film is moving.......As thats where you have the problem.

  9. Hi everyone,

I am looking for an old-fashioned lens to shoot a romantic scene.

I am looking at a Angenieux 25-250 T3,7 zoom lens and was wondering if anyone already used this lens and what it looks like in terms of flare, aberrations, sharpness, color, and overall "swag" :D

    Thanks!!

    G.

Like any zoom from the 60's, pretty nasty! most of course will have not had a proper service for 20 years so that won't help. Expect very soft wide open, fringing, distortion, lots of breathing & don't flare nicely. Stopped down to T8 will look quite sharp. Generally Cooke revolutionised zooms in the 70's starting with the 20-100, even today the perfect beauty lens wide open & is very sharp from 5.6 until 8.

10 years ago a Argenieux 25-250 T3.7 would sell on Ebay for $300.

  10. I think that the 'democratization' of film making, as brought to you by the RED company et. al, has changed the demographic on this forum, and that in turn has led many of its contributors to either cease or drastically reduce posting.

I think your absolutely right, very few people seem to have any interest in lighting anymore, they just want 20 stops of DR & grade it later.

  11. best codec to export out of davinci resolve with the Red footage to be used in after effects for green screen compositing?

After Effects can work directly from the RAW files, so just use the original files from the camera. Ideally camera compression of 5:1 or less & ISO 640

  12. So less than 3'?

I would have thought DP's would want something longer to allow for cutting in after the start of the move and out before it end

The larger the slider, the more space you need, so by being smaller & faster to set up it gets used more.

30 inches is about the most you can easily move the camera without physically moving. I will use a dolly if I want a big move.
