  1. To be a director you usually have to direct your own short films and often make a low budget feature film. I suspect the route is the same no matter where you are, it helps if you've got a producer or at least a would be producer working with you.

Another on set position that could lead to directing is being an actor. It's a more likely route than being a grip or a number of the other crew positions.

As Brian says, however there is a potential shortcut if your a writer, if something you write is sucessful, there is a good chance you will be able to 'insist' on directing the next blockbuster.

  2. I will continue to block your PMs so that you can have the exhilaration of publicly showing everyone how much smarter and better than me you are.

You wrote to me I replied & you wrote back, why would I ever want to waste my time sending you a PM.

You also Friended me yesterday

I am more than happy to publish our entire conversation, you sent the first shot, it's upto you!

If you look in the Red folder, there has been plenty of banter over the years.

  3. Stephen,

Thanks for pointing out the situation with this camera. As we all know, many folks attracted to the Red Scarlet are "newbies" in the filmmaking realm. So much of the RED story is very complicated for folks, it's not like buying a camera from Sony, or Panasonic, or Canon, where it is very clear what is needed to get up and running.

    Best,

    -Tim

My pleasure Tim, you can't imagine the tone of a PM I received about this!

He is even going to report me to my boss if I ever contact him again

  4. I'm glad that cinematography.com has higher standards. I'm just surprised that a sustaining member would be so rude without bothering to find out any details. Announcing that you are sorry for being rude really isn't any salve for the person you are being rude to. Essentially, you've called me a liar- without knowing anything about my post or the way I was going to conduct the transaction. Furthermore, your pointing out that the camera is not ready to shoot without other accessories is beyond ridiculous. Do you comb the forums for people selling cameras without batteries, media or lenses and flag the posts as misleading because the camera isn't ready to shoot all by itself? In the future, perhaps a personal message is a better way for a sustaining member to ferret out what they consider to be misleading posts.

Perhaps you are not aware, I am the moderator of the HD forums here & that BTW includes RED.

  5. Hi Stephen,

I've already found a buyer and since you are so concerned about the pricing I thought I would inform you that I'm am covering the shipping and the transfer fee and inspection fee so by the time all is said and done I really am just about breaking even. Obviously, anyone who is buying the camera understands that they will need other items to use it. Overall, I'm perplexed at your need to chime in on what is patently obvious to anyone in the market for a RED. However, I'm sure there is someone out there who appreciates your two cents.

    Best,

    Hi Scott,

I am concerned that the 7th post you ever made here was misleading, thats all, other places have lower standards.

  6. Hello,

I just received my Scarlet with titanium Canon mount and Bomb EVF. It's a beautiful camera, but at this point I've decided it's not the best camera for me. It is brand new- just arrived on Friday. Please let me know if you are interested. I prefer cash or bank transfer. If you want to use Paypal you will have to pay the charges.

Just looking to break even. Payed 16,400 so asking 16,400. Buyer pays for shipping method of choice.

Serial number of camera is 290.

    Thanks for looking.

I hate to be VERY VERY rude, I do not believe you are just breaking even your making a profit. You are quoting todays prices, you ordered last year at lower Price.

The buyer should be aware that the waranty is NOT transferable, a fee is payable for camera evaluation & a 3 month waranty will be given.

Epics are in stock for immediate shipping, I suspect the wait for Scarlet is very short.

BTW you don't seem to have a way to operate the camera, the buyer would need to buy either a sidehandle, redmote or touch screen plus media if he actually wants to use the camera.

  7. Mitchell was the gold standard, Panavision use pretty much the same movement, you can't improve on enigneering design from 90 years ago!

I still earn a large proportion of my income from using a Mitchell, which some will find odd as I own an Epic!

  8. Hello,

It can be powered via 2B-to-1B Power Adapter Cable which allows us to use Red One Bricks.

Thats not being offeren for sale is it? so what your selling is totally unusable as we speak, Remind me, How much did you actually pay for this under $20k, just saying!

The buyer should also be informed that he will get only a 90 day warranty on the brain which can't be extended, however if you buy a new Epic M the warranty is 2 years which can be extended to 4 years. There has to be a fairly good price incentive to buy used.

  9. Am I correct in thinking that you don't have a way to power the camera at this time?

  10. Hi Landon,

I remember suggesting you did not host your web site for free in the past, I still think you would come over more professional if you did.

I don't mean to bring up an ancient subject (e.g. 2005), but I was browsing Google to see if anyone was talking about me - and sure enough, this little topic popped up at #3. Since everyone (at the time anyway) seemed to be interested in what happened to me, I'll oblige :-).

I ended up getting involved in Theatre, helped to form the Bloomington Repertory Theatre Company where I served as Artistic Director from Jan 2010 to April 2011. While there, I directed both Narnia: The Musical and The Boxcar Children. I am now living in Orlando, Florida - getting ready to move to Cincinnati area to began working on constructing yet another theatre company.

You can check out some of my work and reviews/photos/videos from Narnia on my website, MY WEBSITE.

I just thought it was pretty cool that you guys kept a multi-page forum topic on me :-). Film is still not out of the question, but I have grown up A LOT and learned much more in the last several years - and having looked back on some of my posts when I was younger, I really feel like an idiot trying to act like I knew everything.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing awesome :-), and thanks for the topic :-)).

"Landon D. Parks - made it yet?" - It depends on how you look at it, I suppose :-)

  11. Hey everybody,

I'm looking to buy a motion control system that can repeat pan, tilt and dolly moves. I've looked at the $3300 dollar motiontimer and the $17,000 cineblock. Has anyone tried to use either? Has anyone tried to use either in realtime instead of just timelapse? Are there any ither choices that i'm forgetting that do pan tilt and slider?

Bear in mind that real time & stop motion are the other end of the spectrum with MOCO. Stepping motors are cheap and perfect for time lapse they vibrate & dont go that fast when used for real time. There is no perfevt soloution & renting is often the best .

  12. I don't have any experience of the police in Switzerland simply because I've never been there, but I don't think it's fair to brand an entire force as being incompetent. You will find idiots in any workplace.

I am takling about the UK police especially in London, I lived there for over 30 years.

The Swiss police behave well & get respect of their citizens

I remember when my car got towed away, I was parked in one of the very few streets without yellow lines in W2, however it was snowing so the policeman ASSUMED there were yellow lines! When I complained at the local police station they said you cant make a complaint about a ticket, I said my complaint is about "an attempt to pervert the course of justice". At that point they started to take the matter seriousely!

  13. Stanley Kubrick famously tried to kill off his first film, the only reason it's around today is because Kodak used to make backups of every print.

I have never heard of anybody backing up a print before, if you wanted an extra print you would print another, however for safety in those days one might have struck a CRI. I can't believe Kodak would have had done it at all, they would not have been allowed to & would not have had access to the negative.

Very strange story from the video age IMHO.

  14. The cost of additional gear for shooting film rather than video might be as little as $100,000, but the additional crew and potentially slower set up times

I guess you don't ever shoot film. EXTRA 100K your having a laugh, as for slower set up times........

Features have been shot on 35mm where everybody gets paid for $100,000 the films have even turned a profit.

  15. Police officers develop a sharp eye for potential illegal activity over years of experience. More often than not I'm sure there is nothing wrong, but it's the few times that there really is something wrong that in my opinion, makes it worth it. I don't think we're going to agree here, best leave it.

When I was younger the UK Police behaved themselves, they got & deserved the respect of the majority of citizens. Today they behave very badly & don't deserve any respect, it's there own fault. I have zero sympathy for them.

  16. Stephen,

If they're selling government surplus that would make sense as far as the eyepieces missing. Also, in cases like that, you're looking at more of a parts camera. When you get a surplus camera that is missing parts, the government has been using it as a parts camera. I'd be very cautious in a case like that.

    Best,

    -Tim

They say it's been film tested, so I assume it's complete & working. They offer a 30 day limited guarantee & allow inspections. On the Me page one of the names Dara Reusch is the person I always delt with 10 years ago. Feedback is 99.8% with over 1100 sales in the last year. I don't think they are scammers or intend to rip people off.

  17. They used to do low starting bid auctions without reserve, I guess that does not work now! They used to sell of a huge amount of ex government stock. Once I bought something that was not complete, they just sent me another one without me having to send the first one back!

    Hi Stephen,

Just received the following from Kinemanan:

Have updated the listing to include the Eye piece....

    Thanks for the heads up.

So the two cameras at auction from Kinemanan now have an eyepiece listed in the auction, though the images of the cameras don't have eyepieces with them. It's strange, as even though Kinemanan has written "Eyepiece" into the listing, there is still wording about anything not shown in the pictures is not included. And why would you remove the eyepieces from the cameras, then take pictures of the cameras for the auctions.

    I don't get it.

    Best,

    -Tim

  18. I'm posting this in two separate places because I want folks to be warned.

Don't know what's going on, but right now I can count five eBay auctions for Arriflex cameras where the auction does not include the camera eyepiece. Just to make it clear, finding an Arriflex eyepiece for one of these cameras is a very expensive proposition so please, Buyer Beware. If you buy one of these cameras without an eyepiece, it is completely unusable as it is, and acquiring an eyepiece is going to set you back hundreds of dollars. The individuals who are listing these auctions never mention the eyepieces are missing. Don't want any newbies to be taken advantage of.

    Arriflex IIB

    Arriflex 16S

    Arriflex 16M

    Arriflex 16S

    Arriflex 16M

There is also an individual who keeps listing an Arriflex 16BL without the eyepiece.

Remember, if you buy an Arriflex motion picture camera without an eyepiece, you don't have a motion picture camera, you have a boat anchor.

    Buyer Beware.

    Best,

    -Tim

Interestingly Kinemanan is a reputable company who I have bought loads of Mitchell parts over the years, perhaps you should ask some questions & see what they say.

  19. I've been given an early Arriflex II 35mm camera, and I know the pull down arm or claw was greatly improved with the IIc, but how good is picture stabilization on the early movement has anyone every shot with one?

I answered this question for you almost an hour before you double posted & yes I have used one.

  20. I've been given an early Arriflex II 35mm camera, and I know the pull down arm or claw was greatly improved with the IIc, but how good is picture stabilization on the early movement has anyone every shot with one?

It all depends on the condition & servicing of the camera, at 24/25 it should be pretty good.

  21. This is Imaiyavan here,
