  1. hello all, just finished printing a 15min 35mm short that's being printed with bleach bypass. we're looking to do an ip/in combo, but i'm not sure if we bleach bypass the ip if there are any archival issues to be aware of? any experience in the matter would be most appreciated. cheers, jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  2. if you get your hands on the dvd, listen to schummacher's commentary. he talks extensively about libatique's contributions. the film was shot in regular 16 and not in super because they wanted to get an even grainier image than super. the "tigerland" sequences were shot with bleach bypass on the negative as well as a combination of positive stocks. the idea was to recreate the feeling of original news footage from the time. i'm only summing up what was said in the commentary, but would be interested if anyone has greater details to contribute. cheers, jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  3. Christopher Doyle has said that he's always aspired to be "The Mick Jagger of cinematography," with an ammendment that many think he's more the Keith Richards. Oh the importance of such distinctions. I was rather struck by this analogy; for one Doyle is a household name in Taiwan, where he got his start. I remember a trailer for a three-short thriller here in which his name appeared full screen, like a movie star. Or rock star if you'd prefer. Anyway, it all got me to thinking: How would you rate other dps? and Which rock star do you aspire to? I've started a preliminary list and am curious to see if anyone has any additions. cheers, jake pollock taipei, taiwan and for those who say i've got too much free time i posit to thee: what do you usually do during at the airport after check-in? Vittorio Storaro: Elvis. I mean come on, like it or leave it Storaro is THE king! Gordon Willis: Leonard Cohen. Darkness as poetry... Wexler: Bob Dylan. Political, groundbreaking, and commercially successful... Ellen Kuras: Kim Gordon. New York underground and an inspiration to many younger dps... Malik Sayeed: Miles Davis. Way cool and innovative. And both got started at a ridiculously young age... Owen Roizman: Charlie Parker. Broke all the old rules and set the bar for a whole new approach... Garret Fisher: Les Paul. Ok, so he's not a dp, but damnit if he didn't give us one hell of an instrument to create with! two giants that i can't come up with would be Kaminski and Nykvist. as far as myself, i'd love to be the Tom Waits of cinematography, but i don't know if i've got the voice for it!
  4. how's this for suck-ass: i was in bangkok and flew out the day of the event! doh! not just gautier and doyle, but prieto was there too. damn! jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  5. the village voice is a big fan of his. you can find some stuff on him there. irma vep was shot on film i believe super 16. great stuff indeed. you should try to see some of the other assayas films that he shot. jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  6. five years in the making, with all a-list asian actors... how can that be cheap? and with william chang (production/costume designer/editor) having the power to decide that whole scenes would be re-shot because he wanted to further tweak the set design! started off with escoffier before he passed away, then switched to doyle who shot and shot until wkw finally settled on a look that would work for him. but by that time prior commitments forced doyle to leave: only to find that most of the work he did decorated the cutting room floor. word on the streets is that those two are finito... one of the replacements was doyle's old ac (who also shot the infernal affairs movies). i have no idea who the third (or fourth if you count escoffier) dp is. anyway, with that many dp's it's no wonder that there are so many matching issues. and who supervised the di i wonder? for those of you who hate the film, have any of you seen it a second time? i was very much looking forward to happy together and in the mood for love, was very disappointed in both the first time around, and find them better and better with every viewing. but then again, my favorite wkw film is still days of being wild... jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  7. so that's what john alonzo used to look like! great cinematographers list? that's like asking what's your favorite movie... one of those questions that can only ever be answered by a list. of course once you start listing, it's really hard to stop. henri aleken? anyone? he's like the guy that brought the fresnel lens to motion picture lighting. and sven nykvist? come on, fellas! if we're talkin' greats we can't stop until we hit everybody. and cheers to the tarkovsky dp's. the italian that shot nostalghia definitely deserves a thumbs up as well. what about: ozu's dp-- the guy made a life out of working with only ozu. piotr sobizinski robbie muller vilmos zsigmond michael ballhaus phillipe rousselot and if we start on the "newer" gang: agnes godard eric gautier jean yves-escoffier darius khondji harris sevides christopher doyle ed lachman elliot davis ellen kuras malik sayeed rodrigo prierto thomas newton hall li-ping-bing (hou hsiao hsien's dp and the one who took over after doyle left "in the mood for love") personally, i have to say my top five would be: almendros, nykvist, muller, willis, and a fifth that changes with what movie i've seen recently! jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  8. oscar, thanks for getting back to me. looked at the p+s technik site: they modify 35-3 mags but not cameras. at least that's all they advertise. if you can track down that info on your colleagues 35-3, i'd be most grateful. cheers, jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  9. oscar, do you know where we could get the 35-3 mod done? maybe the same place can do 435s or the rental house would like to get one of their old 35-3s upgraded. either way, i'd appreciate your help. thanks, jake pollock taipei, taiwan
  10. Asking on behalf of a rental company here in Taiwan. They would like to know if there's anywhere (US? Canada? Australia? Europe?) that does third party high speed modifications on 435s? Thanks all. jake pollock taipei, taiwan
