  1. WOW I'm a dork that really needs to cut back on the coffee and slow down a bit!! Searching menus on-site makes for weird mistakes and oversights!! So that no one makes the same dork mistake I did. Hit the Menu button go to "Rec Settings" then to "TC" to "TC In/out sel"the select "TC in". Navigate back to the menu, this time going into "system settings" to "Genlock" to "Genlock Mode" to "EXT" and sync up your genlock signals. From there for whatever reason you still have to enter the external timecode from the "In/Out" terminal. Whew!!! glad we were able to pull TC from the other camera to as a fix for this random spaz out!!
  2. Hello all!! I've gone through all of the menu settings on the varicam and I cannot figure out how to send timecode to another camera for the life of me!! Is there some setting or sub menu combination that I am not aware of?
  3. Okay, guys and gals!! I have a few questions that hopefully the wealth of knowledge here can answer. First a disclaimer, (I actually like disclaimers for some weird reason): My goal is to lens commercials, films (short or long format), and the occasional music video. If given the opportunity, of course. I currently work for a production house that does very little in all those categories. So in the best interest of my personal goals I'd like to submit the following questions.: Is there a benefit to aligning oneself (as a cameraman/cinematographer/DP) to an ad agency? What are the challenges that arise when you build up a narrative reel, when trying to get into commercials and other types of work? Is it easy to get pigeon-holed as a “Insert Category” DP, or is that something that one unconsciously gravitates to? If most of your current work is primarily short form narrative; How do you branch out into other categories of work? There have been several examples of DPs rising through the camera department ranks, getting the nod for commercial work, narrative, etc., or gaining an opportunity for narrative work through documentary work; how often does that happen nowadays? Is there something that I may be missing as far as learning about how the political climate of our craft is going? Does that vary from region to region? If so, what is it like currently in Texas? (I live in Houston, where the bulk of the work is news and oil & gas.) Should I talk with a Union Rep. to figure out how I can better align myself with shooting productions in the aforementioned categories? There are only a handful of people in my state, that have any dealings with unions, and I'm wondering; Would it be better to move to another city, and start all over with the title “aspiring DP”? I'm sure I'll have a ton of other questions, but these are the most nagging to me!! Thank you in advance for your epic help!!!
  4. I work for a rental house in Houston and we own three Aluras they haven't been going out much lately, but from my testing they are amazingly sharp and clear!!! They work well with ultra primes, compact primes, and master primes as well. This is solely based on MY testing and opinion, by all means stop by your local rental house and do your own testing!!!
  5. I would check out Videomaker and see what they have to say on the matter. - Kes Wes James Akalaonu via Facebook.
  6. [***UPDATE***] After sending the camera into Canon; they found a small bit of dirt in the fan assembly, and they removed it along with a sensor cleaning. WHEW!!!
  7. Yes I do keep the SD card in the cameras, I haven't heard from canon if that affects the camera, but I'm hoping that simply removing the card is the easiest solution!!!
  8. Has anyone report any fan error messages with the EF Version of the C300??? I've been having that issue with mine, it still works fine after clearing out the message, but that kind of error message worries the crap outta me!!!

    C300 Aerials

Has anyone used a C300 for aerials? How would you start/stop the camera? Is there a hardwire solution like a paintbox of some kind for the C300 yet? Would there be too much interference to use the WFT unit effectivley? Just asking because a client asked and it made me wonder.... That's a good idea!!! Oh well, anybody know of a solution or work around where the handle could be elongated enough to reach into the cockpit?
  10. Has anyone experienced this??? We have two C300's (one PL the other EF) where the cameras resets itself, and loses all of the custom settings loaded onto the camera. I've found (through vigorous searching, frustration, beating my head against the wall, then finally reading the Op Manual) that the cameras internal battery charges every time that it is plugged into house power, but our C300's are rarely plugged into house power!!! So My ultimate question of the day is: Other than keeping the cameras hooked up to house power, what would YOU do?
  11. So you were the post house and I handed over cases of stills to you and said: "Here's the movie! When you get them all scanned in give me a call so we can "edit" the movie!" Would you think A.) that I am eccentric and the producers have found a very creative way to say "We are going with a different post house." B.) I am plain nuts and just wasted time and money C.) the producers have gone mad and have chosen to shoot in "the highest quality possible" with large format cameras?
  12. Troll (Internet) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about internet slang. For other uses, see Troll (disambiguation). In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into anemotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[3] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted." While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions and harassmentoutside of an online context. For example, mass media has used troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[4][5] Apologies for the late response, but I hope that was helpful, and gives you an understanding of why your post raises red flags. While I do agree with you that the 90's bond films look great, I've had the pleasure of viewing pretty much all of the bond films PRE Brosnan. Once again NOT A FANBOY OF MR. DEAKINS or FILM OR DIGITAL, but what he AND HIS TEAM have done for this series is pretty impressive. While the story is a social kick in the teeth and a bit heavy handed at times it's still a great movie. I am a camera tech and I work with various camera systems, and I have to admit Arri has done a great job with the Alexa series of cameras. How Mr. Deakins chooses to utilize the camera systems along with his lens choice (Master Primes and Optimo's, if I am not mistaken) is not only his choice, but the collaboration with the director on how best to SERVICE THE STORY. As far as I have not read any thread or forum where this statement is implied or even has a decent leg to stand on! Granted Mr. Deakins, much like Mr. Mullen, Mr. Willis, Mr. Stararo, Mrs. Schriber, Mr. Richards Etc. (each respectfully) and plenty of other influencial Cinematographers, DP's, or DoP's whichever is the title of their choosing have NOT made any kind of FILM IS DOOMED posting or interview. While Mr. Deakins is very influential and there are a lot of cinematographers who respect him: His word is not gospel (He alone cannot change the industry). As Gordon Willis one said in an interview in reguards to digital aquisition (Please forgive my half -@$sed paraphrasing): "It's a tool, much like everything else. I'm a tool, the directors' a tool, the gaffer, and other Keys... Tools!!!! Matter of fact here is a link to a great resource that might help to kill two stones with one bird! (Just a quirk I have):http://www.theblackandblue.com/2012/12/10/roger-deakins-advice/ If there is any other way that I can help please let me know!!!
  13. I'm not 100% on this, but I think that Rajendra is trolling, but I could be wrong. As far as I can tell, who I call the "Master of Vista" Roger Deakins did an incredible job with this film. Not really a fanboy of his work, but I respect what he and his team brought to the Bond series of films. As far as the acting goes (which has very little to do with Mr. Deakins) I felt that the cast did a great job even though I didn't buy the idea of James Bond being out numbered, out manned, and out gunned. I think another view of this movie from a more focused viewpoint would help you Raj, but if you just want to troll and say how bad something is just for the heck of it stick to facebook please! For the sake of us all! My $0.02
  14. Would that be enough for a DP or Assistant to shy away from this lens set?
