well no offense to the man or the people here who listed him, but it doesn't look like Gordon Willis is working too much anymore. I would enjoy working with:
Deakins
Elswit
Khondji ( i just worked with him on a Dior spot with Charlize Theron and it looked amazing)
Storaro
Lubezki
Prieto
Richardson
Lance Accord

I'm just wondering if anyone has worked with one of the Leader Cinelite monitors. How was your experience and how does the Cinelite compare to other waveform moniotrs?
thanks,
Mike

Man on Fire ...Paul Cameron analyze every min of the footage.
What version has Paul's commentary? i have a Region 1 dvd and there isn't any commentary by Paul. I see that there's a "2-Disk Collector's Edition" Region 1 and a "Collector's Edition Steelbook" versions. maybe its one of these two?

What happens if you cut a timeline and export it back to the camera, or play it out via the camera onto another monitor?
P
playing via the camera to a LCD/Plasma 720/1080 monitor looks amazing!!!! already stated this in the thread above yours, but to reiterate it looks very good.
thanks,
Mike

How do you mean "looks like crap?"
I have noticed that when you're shooting 24P/60i it can look jaggy. But it could just be a calibration thing on your monitor. Unless your playback is jumpy it's probably not a computer issue.
You mention 1080P/HQ, but what about your picture profile etc?
Does playback through the camera onto a TV look just as bad, and if not, how do they differ in look?
Any chance you can quickly export a few screen grabs, or even a full quality clip?
i know its not the camera. the footage looks great on an Apple display and on a LCD/Plasma via the component out. on my computer the playback isn't jumpy it just looks like SD footage not HD. screen grabs aren't possible right now.
thanks.

I just read the March issue of American Cinematographer where Dexter's DP Romeo Tirone said they shot the last season on the Sony F23 (and first 2 seasons were all F900) and also extensively used the Sony EX1 along the F23 and they cut great. As an EX1 owner it would be great to know the settings they used and specially what cine gammas etc. I thought maybe somebody here works in the show or would have access to this info or know Romeo Tirone and could get some info on that. Anything you could get would be greatly appreciated. I love the look of the show and although it has very little to do with the camera used it would still be great to get some info on how they were getting the best out of the little EX1. Thanks in advance for any insights.
i would like to know as well.

Shoot with an EX1 or EX3. it shoot cut well with the F35 footage.

put the stinger down and pick up a camera. you got a good eye. stick to shooting.

i know this may seem like a very easy question to some of you, but not to me and hopefully not to others struggling with the same issue. the footage from my Sony EX1(1080P HQ) looks like crap on my computer LCD monitor. is doesn't matter if i'm viewing it in the Sony Clip Browser or in Adobe Premiere. it just looks awful. why is this? here's my computer specs if it helps decipher or explain the reasoning:
Dell Inspiron 530 Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz 8mb cache
3GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800Mhz
128MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro
22" Flat Panel 1680x1050
ok, i'm pretty sure its the video card. can someone recommend a video card can handle playing 1920x1080 video and make it look like its HD? i hear the memory is important, ie: 512MB. i think the interface is key as well, ie: PCI Express x16 or x16 2.0.
thanks in advance.

ok. i've watched most of these movies and i've compiled a list of the films with a description of the commentary. the number doesn't represent the importance of the commentary it merely describes the stlye in which it was recorded. Coincidentally, I do enjoy the 5's and 4's the most. here's the scale/legend:
5. DP only on the commentary track.
5b. DP discussion on Pre-Production and Production. No movie commentary track.
5c. disk includes a documentary on the DP. no commentary track during film.
4. DP and Director on commentary track.
4a. DP & Director discuss storyboards, no commentary track during film.
4b. DP & Director discussion on Pre-Production, Production. No commentary track.
3. DP with either the Director, Writer, Set Designer, etc.
2. DP with other crew/talent members not recorded together. tracks recorded individually.
1. DP hardly speaks, ie: Behind the Scenes, Anatomy of a Scene, Featurette. no commentary track during film.
Rodger Dodger = 4
Empire = 4
Black Narcissus = 5c
Fargo = 5
Do the Right Thing = 2
Donnie Darko = 5b
Filed of Dreams = 4
Malcolm X = 2
George Washington = 4
From Hell = 2
Rashomon = 5c
Legends of the Fall = 3
Se7en = 2
X-MEN 2 = 4
Glengarry Glenross = 5
American Beauty = 4a
Monster's Ball = 1
The Cooler = 4
Hedwig and the Angry Inch = 4
Last Life in the Universe = 5
Requiem for a Dream = 5
The Score = 4
Capote = 4
i hope this helps you from getting discouraged if your intent is on watching a commentary track with just the DP. like i eluded to earlier, the 1's and 2's weren't very enjoyable. i still have more films to watch so stay tuned for the results...

Just because you (in the US) haven't heard of Mandy's projects before doesn't mean she's not done anything.
Mandy is a highly regarded Australian cinematographer. Probably her highest profile jobs would have been Ray Lawrence's Lantana (2001)and the ludicrously expensive Chanel No 5 commercial for Baz. I was involved on an earlier film The Well (Samantha Lang) that she shot. Seek out those to have a look at. In every film she has used different techniques always to produce very distinctive looks, typically very redolent of the Australian light and the mood of the film. She is an accredited member of ACS. She wasn't awarded the Hollywood Cinematograher of the Year award for nothing either.
For that matter, what has Baz Luhrmann done before? Only 3 features in 18 years? What were Fox thinking? ;)
chill out chum. it was just an innocent question. it had nothing to do with me being an american. you need to take care of some issues.

Hello, I'm a high school student intresting in lighting. I was wondering where in Los Angeles(CA), is there a lighting school that i can go to?
i'm not aware of any lighting schools outside of Film Schools. periodically the ASC will have master lighting classes, but i think there's a hefty cost to attend them. try contacting Shaun Dixon at Mole Richardson. they have basic lighting seminars for film school students and every once in awhile an ASC DP will teach a class. Birns and Sawyer has seminars about every six months or so. i think that's about it really.

AC mentioned that they worked on Baz's Chanel No.5 shoot.
She DP'd it for him, and after that Baz gave her 'Australia'.
'Variety' seems to agree on this: http://www.variety.com/article/VR111798754...yid=13&cs=1
Baz's Chanel No.5 ad:
oh yeah, i remember that spot. it sort of makes sense now.

ok. thanks to you all.

Thanks Ira,
The Steele Chart is the de-facto Time Lapse Conversion Chart. Oddly enough, it isn't good enough for some cocky newbies... but this is the risk we take when we let people in who have no resume and are not pre-qualified. We can only take names and ignore their pleas for help later. Lack of gratitude and a general lack of overall appreciation is the the downfall of many up and comers... who later... still find themselves as wannabes.
I have a copy (of the Steele Chart) laminated and use it on every Time Lapse job I do... will be using it three days next week shooting Time Lapse. It is indispensable to my Norris Intervalometer and Capping Shutter kit!
As far as getting a 'feel' for what the motion will look like, well, that takes time and experience. The best line I read on this is.. "go shoot a bunch of Time Lapse.. maybe one will work"... .... that is so true!
Glad you and Robin appreciated it. Go shoot some!
Easy there Bubby Boy. i don't see the ASC after your name. so chill out. i'm always grateful for help. maybe you overlooked that part of my posts. i'm aware of the chart. i ASKED for a calculator. if someone asks you for a applebox, would you bring them a C-stand? i doubt it. your original comment was just as rude as anything i've said. "DP's have been using it for years". well, DPs have been using film for over a hundred years. does that mean i shouldn't embrace HD then? this is ridiculous. sorry for offending you mr. rakoczy. have a beautiful career in florida.
-
..or just use the Steele Chart as every other DP, who specializes in Time Lapse Photography, has done for years and years... the bottom tells you how simple it is ;)
should i not use a depth of field program just because there's a chart for it? maybe i shouldn't be using my computer to write this. i'll send you a letter in the mail or a telegram.
-
thanks for your efforts, but that Camerad site doesn't allow me to download a calculator and i already have a chart. i just would like a calculator where i can punch some numbers into.
-
i had no luck with either of those sites. thanks anyways.
-
can someone send me or post a link to a timelapse calculator? i tried Googleing for it. no luck.
thanks,
Mike

From 1/2 soft frost to Lamay, I'm wondering what people like to use for certain situations. ie: diffusing or bouncing various light sources. if there's a link to this topic that's already been discussed i'd appreciate someone sending it to me.
thanks in advance,
Mike
