  1. Like you said, we are going for warm colors. It's better to oversaturate the frame when shooting for HD as when printing to a film, the image tends to get washed out a bit. Could you please give me a list of lighting equipment you would take apart from China balls like Tungsten etc?
  2. Hi, We are going to shoot a feature film on HD for the first time. After taking some suggestions from David and Karl, right here on the forum, I went to my producer and convinced him about shooting HD and bought a couple of books on HD, read them in three days completely. As I am not a pro, I couldn't get the whole hang of it but it looks like HD is gonna takeover film pretty soon. I sent my research notes to my Dp (sorry, forgot to say I'm going to direct the film) who is really excited about shooting HD. The feature is a romantic comedy and we are going to shoot with Panasonic HD Varicam w/ Fujinon Cinestyle lenses(that's the package). As my DP is out of town and we haven't had any discussions yet, I wanna warm up a bit before we sit. Could you please tell me how you would plan for a low budget romantic comedy (I am looking for a warm look--just like the images below) with simple lighting setups and keeping HD in mind? What lighting and camera equipment would you take ( it's a single location shoot, mostly interior and a couple of exteriors)? Could you suggest any movies that fit the above description I can refer to? Your own Checklist for HD shoots? Thank you
  3. I just read this article on FreshDv.com and thought it might be helpful for some of us here. http://www.freshdv.com/2009/06/art-direction-primer.html Though the author talks about a commercial, we face similar situations in the independent film making scenario. What is 'good' art direction? How to make it cheap, meaningful and aesthetic? What elements in production design make a DP's composition better? How does production design on a HD shoot differ from a 35mm shoot?
  4. Sorry for being vague. Doing away with the DI is purely due to budget constraints. We are going to shoot on Panasonic HD varicam . Does it make a huge difference to the viewing experience of a common audience if the HD tapes are directly transferred to 35mm film (without a DI) and projected onto the big screen?
  5. Is it possible to transfer HD footage directly to Film without a DI? If it is possible, how does not getting a DI effect the final output when projected onto a big screen?
  6. Any ideas on creating a warm look with simple lighting set-ups for low budget independent movies.
  7. I just found out that Lawrence Sher used Fujifilm for shooting Natalie's scenes and Kodak for Zach's interactions with the other actors. Fujifilm for the warm, orangish look where as Kodak for the cooler, bluish look.
  8. There is this scene in Garden State where Zach and Natalie sit at the Pet cemetry. On the commentary, the DP said he shot it in the noon. How can you create this magic hour lighting without waiting till the last hour of the day like they did in days of heaven? What kind of film stock gives us the best results?
