  1. Most of the ones I've seen have been for novelty at a trade show or something. It's not film, but "Around the Horn" on ESPN uses a series of four (satellite interview) plasmas on their sides so the host can see them all simultaneously. I assume they're shot this wasy as well, but it could be done as a DVE in the control room instead. We never see the screens close enough to notice the resolution loss if so.

You don't see the resolution loss, but you do see when they switch to the close up of the sports writers. They are shown full screen several times in the program. They are definitely shot normally and just cropped for the screens.

As for the idea of shooting portrait, it has been something on my mind for quite a while. Obviously delivery of the video is the important part(how it's shown). I think an experimental video shown on the web is the way to go. That is unless you can convince all your viewers to turn their TVs sideways. :)

  2. I really like the color palette , but every shot looks too closely cropped. It looks as if it was shot in 4x3 without a clear idea of how much would eventually be cropped in post. It seems like a 1.78 or so ratio would be more fitting. Good stuff!

Looks nice. Without knowing the context, it's hard to say what's too much diffusion -- this could be a flashback or dream sequence, or meant to have that feeling.

Making the blacks a little blacker may help improve the sharpness a little.

I hope every shot in the short won't have cropped foreheads though.

  3. Hi, I am shooting a project for a cinematography class tomorrow on 16mm b+w film. I am using the stocks 7222 and 7231(for outdoor scenes). We are using the Bolex H16 cameras with the prism reflex systems. We have been taught to compensate for the light loss on the camera by 2/3's of a stop. So when shooting 7222(200asa) we meter for 133asa. But I was looking at the ASA rating of the 7231 which is 80-daylight and 64-tungsten. I am racking my brain trying to figure out what I should meter for with this stock when shooting outside. I thought I remember metering it as 50ASA on previous projects, but I have forgotten(so has my group members). Any thoughts?

  4. After seeing the Arri D20 in person with their new footage on display in the booth at NAB, I too can vouch that the D20 is much better-looking than anything I've seen so-far from the Drake.

Very true. That footage at the Arri booth was simply stunning. It's just not a fair comparison. You get what you pay for.

  5. I am buying a Konvas 2m that comes with a non-cystal motor. I plan to buy the crystal motor(17EP) and install it. The one thing I don't know about is powering the crystal motor. What would be the best(most portable) option for powering this system? And how long do these batteries last? Thanks!

  6. Hmm...thanks for that clarification. Just to make sure I totally understand. To get a motion blurred and brighter image similar to slow shutter speeds in the video world, I would have to shoot a lower frame rate? And if that's the case, how do I slow the footage back down to normal speed? Is this done in the telecine process if you were going to video?
