  1. Hi all! My freind want's me to shoot a shoort commercial of chinese games. We have two guys Kungu Fu masters and they will be fighting against each other. Common fighting scene. Director want's it to look like old school movie. We probably shooting HD - EX3 or 7D and we are thinkig how to do that effect? Does anyone have any idea what should I do in Post to create look like in film enter the dragon:)??
  2. Hi all! I'm preapering for shoort which I want to shoot on RED system with ZEISS CP.2 Half of story is situated in night exterior - city streets. There is one scene where guy is riding bicycle and talk on a cellphone with someone. This is my problem because I want to feel free with these shoots i mean I want to ride next to actor and shoot him for about 5 to 10 minutes from diferent angles(quad with steadicam). I know that street's aren't lit well and I don't have much options to lit it by my source. I'm thinking of other camera like EX3 or F900r, 7D which is more sensitive than RED. Other night shoots i will shoot with RED cuz I have chance to lit it by strong source's. This will be my first time with RED.Is it better to choose more sensitive camera and shoot free style on street or stay with RED and try to lit a street... Could anyone recomend me an option or how to figure it out?and what you guyes do in case like these? maybe I'm not seeing something? I think I need help from cinematgraphy readers:) Sory for my language and hope you didn't waste your time. Ted. Warsaw.

  4. Hi there again. So after meeting with director He changed his mind about look of the clip. So now we want to achive a colo mood like in this musiv video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9QYv9XBMHI I' am intresting of ambience light in main dancing room, and Her (Janet) light on face. I am worried becasue our location have very low ceiling and in Janet's video ceiling is very high so They could placed source on it. So i'm thinking how to mount strong source on my ceiling to create soft yellow ambient light. Any idea would be very helpfull. Thanks. Ted.
  5. maybe ring light will be a good call? I made such ring myself with home 8x 60W bulbs and bicycle wheel hmm?
  6. Woow. Director want to take off the disco balls but after that post I will talk to him, maybe it would be better to keep them. Also director want to keep HER beauty, her skin must be soft so i gues Spot light is no longer good option. So now I thinking if 2 par's above Her head with 1/2 or full #216 + 1/4 straw and strong but quite soft 1/4 or 1/2 backlight as said with 1/2 CTB. I like my idea about china balls for ambience for dancing people. At this time director decide to shoot on Canon 5D mk II so i'm worried about overexposed highlights, the dynamic range of this camera isn't very big in highlights right?
  7. Thanks Adrian. That disco balls I decided to take off and in place of one oh them rig a SPOT 1K as KEY light for HER. Other option is 2K chimera with 1/4 or 1/2 straw GEL that is my idea to lit her. Could any of you tell me is it better to gel light and do not change it in post or lit all with small difference between kelvin and warm image in post? Sory for that kind of question but as i said it's my first time shooting video as this. Now I have to think a little bit and I see what I have figure out:) Thanks. Ted.
  8. Hi All!! In a week i will shoot a music video. We have cool location and a lot of people. The idea is to try build some mood of late 40's. We shoot in club. Main scene will be singing vocalist {She} standing on a small stage. In front of her people will dance and have fun. I'd like to lit it with some yellowish or orangish style, but don't have an idea what kind of source to use. Should it be a 1K SPOT with yell or straw gel for her and china balls for fill light above dancing people. Generally I am not strong with lighting situations like these and I'd love to hear what's good or bad or what will be a good decision and what will be a stupid idea:) I know that in 40's wasn't an HMI lights so i'd like to use only 3200 light... is it good idea? Also i think that smoke will create vibe that i'm looking for. Thanks for you're time and ask what else you'de like to know for better answer. I'm still deciding between shooting EX 3 + letus extreme zeiss compact prime or same zeiss primes with CANON 5D ...? Thanks.   9. Hi. So answering about the gear: First shoot was with Sony EX 1 +Letus 35 extreme with zeiss compact prime 50mm f/1.4 and all shoots of guy wearing red dress was shoot on this set. The same with part at swiming pool and studio black limbo shoots. Other was Sony z7 and z7 with letus zeiss prime. Thanks for reply for my thread. Ted.

  12. I'm just exportin my showreel and codec H.264 looks for me very desaturated than orginal clip. Apple Pro res 422 is good but not working on youtube so now i'm exporting it to XDCAM EX 1080p25 35 VBR cuz most of material was shooting on EX 1 and 3. Hope it helps. Ted.
  13. what kind of anamorphic on canon are you talking about? If you want to mount a PL lens onto a canon 5D you have to rebiuld the body and mount the PL mount in the camera that is quite dificult for noob:) so maybe thare are some other lenses which fits to canon and do the anamorf squeze:)??
  14. Thanks. Right, about anamorf. I'd like to shoot 2.35:1 and don't know is it posible to shoot with anamorphic lens on EX 3 with letus or HdCam ? Or its easier to crop the image of 25mm lens and use it as 50 mm fo example hmm?
  15. But didn't HDcam with digiprimes like canon or fujinon (is that right?) looks like a simpe sitcom on TV? In Poland evry TV storyies are shoot on HDcam 700 or XDCAM and they look so flat and plastic...can't look on it! Or it's just depend on color grading and same material could look more like film ?
  16. HaHa now You don't want! Now its like raining since 4 days. Temperature is about 15 degres of Celsius:) But i shoot in vacation and if You'd like to come for vacation for few days and take a look about this production and help me than for sure you could go back with some your own shots to your new reel:) in axample night warsaw streets:) Yeah your post is huge and helpfull. As i mentioned i can orginaise RED1 and lomo anamorf lens like 35 f/1.4 from my teacher Andrzej Jaroszewicz who is a President of Polish Society of Cinematographers. Cool man. getting to point. I can have RED1 realy cheap with lens but not sure if i can make a free postproduction and all of that stuf ( editing,conforming, EDL,color grading and MASTER HD etc) Or i just feel a litle bit lost in case like these. My other works were editing on my iMac 24" on FCP and colorated in Magic Bullets look or colorista. Mostly shoot on EX 1 with letus extreme. like those shots under: One of my first shoort on 1st year. title: Conversation. Max 2 minutes. EX 1 letus, zeiss compact prime 50mm 1.4 and 80mm 1.4 nikon 70-200 2.8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVYt6sbKbGM and Videoclip same EX with letus and lens but instead of 7-200 was 135 f/2.0 Canon If I will not find way to get free post RED1 i'll choose EX3 with letus and zeiss maybe with HDCAM taperecorder through BNC/HD SDI i heard that in that way i could achieve 4:2:2 color sampling from EX is that right? and what advantage it gives me? There are no NANOFLASHERS in Poland noone has it:) Ted.
  17. Great! Actually for me it's easier to mount an adapter to EX 1 than EX 3. Adapter mounted directly to camera body (through special other connection lens) it's more complicated to find for me because letus 35 is just put on the top of lens in EX 1 or 3. Ok: I'm planing to take 3 days of shooting 4 exteriors [ small park in neighbor, public swimming pool both at DAY] other 2 exteriors are streets of warsaw passed by guy on bicycle about 3 shoots and that I would like to shot at magic hour and at NIGHT a Train station] 1 interior [typical europe flat in downtown, old, lots of wood ] Me and dir. wants to achieve a look of hot day during vacation. No water for 3 weeks, totally blue sky or with some clouds - depend on weather:) it would be nice to feel humid in the exterior day shoot - even in interior shoot in flat. Windows will be open, guy will be laying on a sofa eating pizza in big living room. My idea is to keep those shoot in yellowish bit orange tone. There are 3 to 5 shoots of guy riding bicycle on a street during magic hour (it would be the best option i think) and few shoots of night. Those part is still open and i'm not sure yet what style should have, but i'd like to experiment with some technigue. I don't want it too realistic. I don't have an idea how special hot night in short could look like maybe because it will be my first serius shoot of night for film (usig large hmi or other big units) So acording to this i'd like to hear of your expierience about situations like these? Not asking for advice how exactly how to do it but for sure many of you are having shoots like these in your reels or i'm not to informated, but Adrien your showreel is prety impressive for me:) I like shoots with that kind of mood:) Technically: I have preety big chance to use lot of lighting equipment. My school coorporate with lighting magazine so i will have a gafer and HMI up to 12K Arri sun is not problem i think. Same with kino flos kobold and Arri studios. Is that amount of information is enough to analizy which system go for? :) Thanks for your time! Ted.
  18. Hi there all comunity of cinematography.com! I got money from school to shoot shoot in vacation time. Story is about a boy that is spending his whole vacation school break i his own town. My problem is to choose the best camera system:) School don't want to pay for camera cuz they told me that they have camera ( Sony Z5 and its graet!!) but they sucks and I want to shoot at leat on: Sony EX 1or3 with Letus extreme and zeiss compact prime or Sony HDW 650 with P+S Technik with same zeiss compact prime or Canon 5D with zeiss prime lens with nikkon mount via conon-nikon adapter What do you think? Maybe there is an other way, an other camera system that i don't know? I'd like to shoot super16 on kodak 500T with arri sr3 but school wont give money for procesing damn.....same with RED stupid school:) thanks for your time! Ted. Warsaw

I'm also going to create the soft mood by adding a little bit of smoke. And Kinos are just in case of use fill light:) Your image seems to me a little bit too contrasty...My idea is to create 2xsofter light than you did. Not saying that I don't like the your image, just not what I was exactly thinking. :) Thanks again.
  20. Hi. Short and Quick:) Tomorow I'll be shooting short student scene. We are shooting in bedroom. I'd like to achive soft/smooth light coming from the window with yellow curtins(not see whats outside beside that is a early morning like 4 or 5 am) this is my plan. 2,5 Kw HMI PAR 3 meters from window with FULL frame 216 or other diff gel through 3x3 butterfly 1/2 GRID Kino flo 120 and 60 both 4bank/5600 with 1/2 216gel or other diff maybe SILK? for fill light and thats it. What do you think? I'll be shooting on CANON 5D mark II nikon prime 20mm f/2.8 (with adapter) I want to keep contrast at 1:4 THX for your time! Ted. Warsaw

  24. Hi there! I just bought a new 5D mkII. Few minutes ago I was trying to shoot a scene measuring light with Sekonic first. I set ISO 400 in camera and in Lightmetter also 400. I measured 18%grey and it shows 1/125 and F/2.0 i set these in camera and it were to to much light about 1.5 stop. is it possible that Iso in camera is not seted precasily? I mean if I want to cooperate with light metter i shoul set 200 in camera and 400 in lightmetter? Or what? Thnks for time, and sory for my language:)
