  1. Encoding to Bluray from Super 16mm is a difficult art. It is quite hard to keep the exact grain structure, and often some high end noise reduction might be the only solution to soften the conversion.
  2. Yes Will is correct - do any scanners read aaton code?
  3. Hello all, I wanted to ask any experts what the potential work flow would be to sync Aaton code with any film rushes that may be scanned as opposed to the traditional telecine route which utilizes Aaton Keylink on the telecine head to sync rushes. Is Aaton code now redundant if any film rushes are choosen to be scanned rather than telecined? There doesn't seem to be any Aaton Keylink-like system for any film scanner that I am aware of? What does everyone think? John
  4. Hello, What is the best method to do a speed ramp on the Prod? What additional equipment is best to do this with? I've tried to do it very crudely with pretty poor results, any advice/experiences would be much appreciated. J
  5. Hi Alec, It could be two things I think. 1. A dodgy cart, unlikely if its from Kodak. 2. The film claw/pick up is not latching to the film sprokets properly. This means your camera needs a bit of a service/looking at and it should solve it. Best of luck J
  6. Thanks Mitch, I will drop you a line. I am based in the UK currently. How does the VHR split compare to the VHA?
  7. Thanks for the reply Mitch. So what is currently the best Aaton colour split for the XTRs?
  8. Hello all, I was hoping to start a discussion on color split options for the Aaton xtr's. Two main questions for any experts out there that I have been wondering about - 1. Has anyone made an HD split for any Aaton? 2. Does anyone know if any of the more modern Arri splits could be converted to work with an Aaton? Thankyou all, I look forward to any input. J
  9. OK great - thanks for the tip, I know Aaton made an official one that makes use of the illumination, but very expensive and hard to find...
  10. Hello all, I just wanted to ask if anyone knows where one could possibly find a 2:35:1 or 2:40:1 aspect ground glass for an Aaton XTR? Apparently they were made... Any advice would be much appreciated... J
  11. Thanks Ian. For some reason I thought there was a 800asa stock. I like your videos too btw. J
  12. :D Haha, awesome thanks for the advice guys, i'm looking forward to giving the camera a go. Also does anyone know if 500ASA is the fastest stock available on 100ft daylight spools?
  13. One other thing - pls excuse my newbie question  - Does the scoopic always need to be loaded in a changing bag or is "subdued light" OK? Cheers J
  14. Ok great. Thanks for the tip Will, much appreciated. J
  15. Hello all, I recently found a Canon Scoopic MS in a op shop and wanted to know how to tell if the battery needs re-celling? It powers on the camera and reads as the battery is charged (goes to blue) but I know the camera hasn't been used for a long time (5 years). Any help would be much appreciated. J
  16. Thanks for the replies guys. They all sound fantastic, i'm going to look into both the Elmo and Beaulieu options. Cheers John
  17. Hello All, Just wanted to ask advice on what people think is the best super 8 projector? John
  18. I have always been interested in testing different lenses on c-mountable super 8 cameras and was curious to hear if anyone has any opinions and actual experiences on various lenses, whether they be primes or zooms at any length, that have either been great, or terrible. For example, a friend swears by his Angenieux c-mount zoom (8-64mm) as being sharp as a tack at all ranges, while others say that it is really soft and actually the worst of the Angenieux c-mount zooms made for super 8 and that even those security cameras lenses and primes will always be a better option on the c-mount for super 8. I plan to do some tests in the future, but thought i'd see if anyone has any comments/things to consider with specific lenses to trial...
  19. Hi Dave, Thanks for the reply. I think a f1.1 lens for the magic hours is a good idea! As you say some 5207 would be wise. Do you think a 1 1/2 stop overexposure would match the grain OK or it doesn't even need to be taken that far? J
  20. Hello all, Any advice would be much appreciated, I have a shoot where all exterior scenes are being shot on Vision 2 5201 50D. The shoot spans the length of the whole day and the suggestion came up to overexpose across the board 1 stop, but I'm not so sure given its already pretty slow - does anyone have any advice on this particular stock, and what the potential results would be in pulling it one stop? J
  21. Hello all, I am looking into the Max 8 format and have read many posts here but would like to get some expert opinions from around here on a few slightly confusing things. 1. Can this Max 8 format be telecined at anywhere else other than Pro 8mm, if so, where? 2. Why are the viewfinder lines in a "Max 8" camera not actually true 16:9 but actually in a ratio that can never be used? Thankyou, John
  22. This is good discussion, and I appreciate all the good advice. It was news to me that the camera is so power hungry, but I did actually think the batteries could have something to do with it just by looking at the motor rotating after running 20 + rolls it visually looked like it was rotating slower! Its a shame the 6008Pro doesn't have a battery meter, I came from the 1014XL and the AAs on that hardly ever needed to be changed and was always such a reliable option. There is certainly something plastic about the camera bodies as if it's one bump away from being a write off! I do agree seeking the right people to service these Beaulieu's it is important, so thankyou for your recommendations, the camera apparently came from a "pro" place in LA but still needs work so I can appreciate the car analogies! Happy holidays all. John.
  23. Hello all, I just shot a variety of different stocks, some Kodak, some third-party "pro" film, with a Beaulieu 6008 - specifically to use its 80fps function - however most of the footage has terrible jitter as if it is jamming and the claw is not gripping. The problem is not consistent to a specific stock or frame rate - it comes and goes. I'm not talking small jitter but unwatchable jamming like shuddering. I've read Beaulieu Super 8 cameras are notoriously unreliable for some, but I was hoping to get some other expert opinions. Is 80fps just a gimmicky option on these cameras and not truly possible on the super 8 format due to the cartridges - or is the camera possibly broken and using third party Super 8 housed film not helping the cause? Either way the terrible jitter happened on Kodak direct film and the third party film. It's strange because sometimes it worked great at 80fps, other times it didn't even manage 24fps or 18fps, which make me think maybe the camera claw is just broken (although apparently recently serviced! ) but i'm interested to hear if people have experienced this kind of unreliability before? If this is generally how hit and miss and unreliable the Beaulieu 6008 is - it is not a viable camera. John
