  1. Yes thats what I was thinking. Learn the pros and cons of it when it isn't costing anyone any money to make mistakes.
  2. Well this is my situation. Im currently in pre-production on my senior film for college. My professor is trying to advise me to find a DP. I really want to shoot my film since cinematography is the field I want to someday get a job in, and i just love shooting. I thought of the idea of having an assistant director to the bulk of the directing work, but then I would have to worry about telling he/she what to do. Even though its not the best route, i want to direct/shoot my film. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
  3. The character's girlfriend is held at gunpoint and he doesnt know how to act. He has always been weak and timid, so violence is something he doesnt know how to react to. As for point of view, the story really doesnt have one main character, it has several. But this particular scene is from that character's point of view, since its a flashback. Does this make any sense?
  4. What are your thoughts on this? Should directors always hire a dp to shoot for them?
  5. ah good point. I really dont want the audience to mistake it for a drug induced experience , thats what im most worried about. I want to avoid the whole room spinning thing ive scene dozens of times.
  6. Actually a lens-baby was the first thing that came to mind. Or using a wide lens really tight on the actor's face so it distorts it.
  7. For my upcoming film, the main character has a panic attack and cannot react to the current situation. What would be the best way to represent this on screen? Anyone have any ideas or references i could look at?
  8. I was thinking of doing some fight scenes in an upcoming short. However I know nothing about martial arts. Is it necessary to have a background in martial arts before doing choreography? Anyone have any tips or suggestions?
  9. Making a film look old isnt hard to do. I'm pretty sure you could do it in FCP. Its just applying a filter
  10. Youre getting there, The key thing to keep in mind is to establish the distance between the two actors in the shot. You cant cut from a straight on shot to a close up because it doesnt establish any type of space. Its important to always establish the space in the scene/frame before cutting Also, the F/stop is important when considering Depth of Field. If you have a wide lens you'll have a deeper DOF, if you have a longer lens youll have a shallower DOF. DOF is important when choosing what type of shot you want, and Ive never seen an establishing shot with a shallow depth of field. You would generally want a deeper DOF for an establishing shot. With close ups, a shallow depth of field isnt a problem. Remember, long focal length = shallow DOF, shorter focal length = deeper DOF. Does this make sense?
  11. Im trying to develop a superhero type film, going into it I knew i had to think outside the box as far as costumes, powers, etc. The idea is now along the line of the Heroes TV show mixed Anime elements. t might be shelved if I cant find a way to do it with my resources.
  12. How could I go about solving this problem? Everytime I go about writing a script, I come up with ideas that seem to be impossible with my resources. I usually end up scrapping the idea or re-writing the script to fit my budget. Its usually the former. Maybe I'm not thinking outside the box enough but its limiting what types of films i can make. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can fix my thinking?
  13. I think the main problem with all of these summer blockbuster movies is that they seem to have 5 to 6 writers. Thor, X-men First Class, Green Lantern, and even the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie have 6 writers credited. Super 8 had one writer, and its the movie I've enjoyed the most this summer. I cant imagine how 6 people can write a script and all be on the same level of what the story should be. I believe the heavy CGI movies are trying to distract you from the fact that the script is a mess.
  14. To me comic book movies are a fun way to waste two hours. If I want to watch something thought provoking I'll go look up a Jean Luc Goddard film or something. If I want to be entertained at the movies I'll watch a comic book movie. Now do I always want to watch this type of movie? No, sometimes I want something thought provoking.
  15. Critics seem to be tearing this movie apart left and right, but audiences seem to love it. I enjoyed it for what it was, it had some serious problems, but it wasnt awful. It was on the level of Thor and the first Iron Man to me. Has anyone else seen it yet?
  16. I know after effects allows you to do compositing and match moving. But how would I go about creating the actual weapons? Would I use Maya?
  17. I wouldnt know where to begin, I dont even know what program to use
  18. Im thinking of scraping the idea. It just seems too big of a hassle. Thanks for all of the ideas
  19. So the simple answer is no, unless I hire an experienced VFX artist? I'm starting to see why movies spend so much on CGI and VFX
  20. I want to replace a limb with a gun i.e. Evil Dead or Grindhouse. Or a sword like in Terminator 2. Is this possible?
  21. Im looking to create CGI guns, swords etc. for an upcoming short film. Is there an easy way to create them to integrate with live action footage? What software could I use to go about doing this?
  22. Hi, I posted a question about lighting a kitchen a while back and I'm coming close to a solution. My major problem is the huge amount of natural light coming from a window above the sink Seen here via my shitty camera phone http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6384/img0...01002131602.jpg I know about using the ND filter on the camera but it can only do so much. What would be a cheap solution to diffuse the daylight coming from the windows?
  23. I wish you could, Im in Baltimore MD though sadly
